"Yotsuba as an alien" plot edit

I'm taking this paragraph out for a couple of reasons:

  • ADVs back-cover blurb in the English version is not a foreword to the manga, and this idea isn't repeated in the Japanese version. Without official weight from Azuma, the paragraph is just idle discussion and speculation.
  • Trying to resolve these ideas with stuff like "However this is not true because she is just acting how a regular 5 year old would act if she lived in a spacious island." is stepping into original research territory.

Not to say that the kid isn't spaced-out sometimes, but I don't think the paragraph adds anything. - Omnisentry 03:47, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

What Yotsuba doesn't know edit

Shrines do not confuse Yotsuba: in chapter 5, she not only knows that festivals take place in shrines but how to pray at one. I'm replacing that example with doorbells, as it does take a couple days for her to get the hang of them (both inside and outside uses). Quasirandom 18:42, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Where Yotsuba claims she's from edit

When Yotsuba claims she's "from the left," is she talking about her (adoptive) grandparents' home or where Koiwai found her? In chapter 4, Mrs. Ayase seems to think Yotsuba meant a home overseas, but throughout the first several chapters, when someone asks where she's from, as far as I can tell she responds with information about where she just moved from (either "the left" or, while gesturing with her left arm, "waaaaay over there"; in a 4-koma in ch 24.5, she does both). It's not even clear to me she has any memories from before she came to Japan. Quasirandom 18:50, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Eventually answering my own question, in ch 14 Ena reports that Yotsuba says she'd been living with her grandmother, and before that on an island to the left. So origin, not grandparents, are to the left. I've tidied the description based on that. -Quasirandom 15:10, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yotsuba in the real world edit

As part of establishing the notability of Yotsuba-chan (given recent changes about inheritance of notability in WP:FICT) we need to establish her out-of-universe existence. Which I take to mean a) noting critical/reviewer reactions to her (going through reviews already cited in the main article for a start) and b) find citations for those two instances of Yotsuba as pop culture references -- and possibly find others. Any help with the latter would be appreciated. (I mean, I can see Yotsuba imagery throughout 4chan -- how do we cite/source that?) —Quasirandom 21:38, 31 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Annent this, I'm amused to see in this review of Strawberry Marshmellow, Miu described as "Yotsuba Koiwai with fangs." I've no idea how to frame this in the article, but if critics are comparing other characters to Yotsuba, that's certainly some sort of notability. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merchandizing edit

Anyone up for summarizing Yotsuba merchandize? I know about the figurine, but not much beyond its existence (any sales figures?), and the materials mentioned the main article of course. Is there anything else encyclopedic? —Quasirandom 14:15, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Peer review points to work on edit

It occurs to me I should copy out those peer review points that are still unaddressed, just so we can keep track:

  • The article is currently very short ~700 words. Consider adding more information. Some ideas may include information about the character's Production, the Character's role in the fictional work, etc.
  • The article does not explain why the character does what she does (both in the fiction, as well as why did the writer decide the character does what she (the character) does). If possible, this should be expanded.

The second being something essentially a request for an "Origins and influences" section, if we can gather enough from Azuma's statements about it. —Quasirandom (talk) 21:36, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not 4chan's mascot edit

Although she is shown frequently on 4chan as 404 girl, she is not 4chan's mascot and should otherwise be considered a meme on the website. - Crazyconan (talk) 06:43, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

At one point, she was described as an "unofficial mascot," but the adjective got edited out. If you talk to different 4channers, they have different ideas about whether she should be considered a mascot or not. Possibly we should restore the adjective. —Quasirandom (talk) 21:41, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
From what I understand of 4chan, Yotsuba serves as their 404 girl(as has been mentioned) and is commonly seen as a sort of mascot due to her hair forming the symbol for the website. As I'm not familiar with 4chan, this is only second hand information directly from a 4channer, but I do think her role as 404 girl, if not as a mascot, for 4chan should be noted.
So says Mew Blackberri who forgot to log in. Again. 24.96.182.77 (talk) 03:10, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. I've restored the deleted sectionl. If anyone wants to delete or trim, let's talk about why or why not first. —Quasirandom (talk) 16:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's worth mentioning that 2chan, in much the inspiration for 4chan, is short for "Futaba Channel" (Two-leaf channel). Following the same convention 4chan would be short for "Yotsuba Channel". --Drabant (talk) 09:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but that's information more for the 4chan article than here. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:55, 17 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Some critical information has been left out -- while 4Chan is home to sum of the most degenerate scum on the internet, if you ask for "Rule 34" of Yotsuba... they will 'effin ruin your life--74.178.228.88 (talk) 00:10, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Came here to check Danbooru's wiki"" on her, which says: The main character from the Yotsubato!. A tiny five-year old girl with a distinctive green hair tied into quad tails, resemble a four-leaf clover, fitting with her name. Also, apparently not a Japanese.
4chan uses her as a mascot/on their 404 pages and hold her in high enough regard that asking for porn of her gets angry reactions and most often even bans'.
So, good for 4chan. Claverhouse (talk) 08:08, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Assessment question edit

Kraftlos, since you reassessed this to C from B, a question: which of the 6 B-level criteria do you think this doesn't meet? Just to have pointers on what to work on. (I mean, I know what I think needs doing, but that's just me.) —Quasirandom (talk) 02:56, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for asking. I reassess a lot of pages so I dont get to be too detailed with every one. The main issues with this article are stylistic, but it could also use some more reliable third-party sources for notability and balance. I'd start with WP:MOS-AM under Characters article and make sure everything lines up there, then get more references. I'll do the assessment check list when i get a chance. --Kraftlos (talk) 20:50, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding. I wouldn't mind a more sources for the notability, though seven third-party references is a decent number I thought. I'm honestly more worried about the development section, as there's hardly any info in English (though there's a fair amount in Japanese, apparently). (It does line up to the MOS section, though -- that I feel solid about, as I drafted those guidelines.) —Quasirandom (talk) 22:02, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
As far as I can tell, the only reliable third party sources that has been cited are NewType and possibly Anime News Network (not 100% sure it's a reliable source). You also have two sources which demonstrate cultural references to the character.
I wouldn't say that the character is not notable enough to have its own article, but I think it's a bit shakey. Per Wikipedia:Notability (fiction)#Elements of fiction, this character article needs to references significant coverage by reliable third-party sources which describe real-world implications of the character, not just a summary of its role in the original work. The only real problem stylistically is the lack of an external links section (I changed notes to references per the MOS).
So the main things that need to be improved are the amount of content, more specifics as to this character's notability, and possible consider changing the headings to the more standard titles included in the MOS (however that part is optional). If this can be done, then it should go back up to B-Class. --Kraftlos (talk) 04:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the responses. I won't argue that all the third-party sources are fully WP:RS, but ANN and The Comics Reporter definitely are: ANN is all but the newspaper of record for the field and the reviews (which are what's cited) are as reliable source-y as they come, and while TCR is, yes, self-published, the writer is an authority in his field (American comics) and so his reviews count as reliable as well. You're right that more of those need to be included in the describing-her section. And, yeah, more on the character in the real world (both creation and influence) are Highly Desirable. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looks like some work has been done here, I'm going to reassess. --Kraftlos (Talk | Contrib) 21:07, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I inititally reassessed this as a B-Class, but after looking at the example B-class character article: Edward Elric, I'd say both in number of references and in sheer content we're still a bit shy of B-Class. --Kraftlos (Talk | Contrib) 07:23, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Given that there really needs to be more Conception/Development information, I can't really argue that. Unfortunately, it's all in Japanese. —Quasirandom (talk) 15:34, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
