Number of Registered Users

Two price tables?

Is there any particular reason there's two price tables? One with the prices in the original currency and one with the price in USD. It seems to have been added on October 21st in this edit, but I wanted to check here before taking it out, since it's been in so long. Just seems kind of... redundant? Possible copyright violation: "Holiday 2007 Issues" section

The majority of the section titled "Holiday 2007 Issues", originally added by 70.15.10.90 on January 3, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST (revision 181874708), appears to have been copied and pasted from a GameSpot article at http://www.gamespot.com/news/6184221.html, possibly in violation of a copyright (see: Wikipedia:Copyright violations). Some minor criticism of the cancellation procedures isn't likely to make the pages of a newspaper or publications of a similar stature. I think it may be that end users are confused. You do not need to cancel your account, just down grade to silver level. All of this can be done with the website at billing.microsoft.com - yo can change auto-renew, stop your gold membership, as well as add and remove payment methods, including credit cards. Serious Question

Is it just me... or is this article a load of rubbish? It talks for paragraphs and paragraphs about Xbox Live's "members" and how many have "subscribed" and how Microsoft "celebrates" these victories and all that jazz... and then it says that this counts Silver users!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Silver users HAVE NOT paid for the service and CANNOT play online - it's just a gimmick that comes with every Xbox, so I believe it is extremely misleading and deceitful to talk about a subscription online gaming service and count people who HAVE NOT subscribed and cannot play games on it! Please, please, please tell us how many people USE and PAY FOR Xbox live, that is, how many Gold members there are - that's what people come here to find out (due to internet rumours that only 5-10% of Xbox users pay for Live) - but instead the article completely misleads them unless you read very closely, right to the end, and realise it's all a load of rubbish and the number just represent how many Xboxes are sold. --DreamsReign (talk) 20:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Good Article Review

Hey, I was the reviewer for the GAN for Xbox Live. I found a few problems, but overall I must say it was pretty good. Being an XBOX 360 owner with Live, I know a lot about this subject and to be honest there are several aspects missing. For one, hardly anything was mentioned about achievements on XBOX Live. Achievements are a large part of XBOX Live, and I could understand it because I play a lot on XBOX Live, but to someone say wanting to buy an XBOX 360 and is looking at the Live article, they would be very confused. Another thing, why isn't there a redirect for xbox 360 live. I remember when I first came looking on Wikipedia for a XBOX Live article, I typed in XBOX 360 Live, obviously I got it from search but it should still be there. You can always put the article on hold and inform the editors that they have a week to work out the issues, in your case, expand the achievement section of the article (with reliable refs of course). Wired Headset

Xbox Live is not available in South Africa (not on list at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/countries.htm) and no firm details have been received from Microsoft South Africa. There is a current petition (http://www.sayyoursay.com/Xbox360/) to get it launched, but there is no current news. Can someone update the main page, I'm new here? I just ran across a similar issue myself. I noticed that on a page linking to the Xbox LIVE page, LIVE was incorrectly capitalized according to the official trademark, and the Xbox 360 Technical Certification Requirements. I was going to edit and fix it, but further investigation revealed that this is the norm across all Wikipedia pages, including the actual Xbox LIVE page. Dedicated servers are game specific. Some game developer companies provide dedicated servers for their XBox 360 titles. Some games have the ability to run as servers, without gameplay on that console. The same holds true for other console platforms. Hoovie (talk) 17:03, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

The claim that "lack of dedicated servers" constitutes criticism is itself in dispute. It's a urban-myth generated from the opinion that anything MS does it "bad and worthy of criticism". Not having dedicated servers is an advantage in many regards. A dicussion of dedicated vs. user-hosted may be worthwhile, but adding a "CRITICISM" section is A) unnecessary, B) contrary to the reality of the situation and C) against wikipedia general style guidelines.

There ARE dedicated PC Server softwares for some titles.

Free month with new account, not new console

The article states that "Every new Xbox 360 comes with a 1 month subscription to Xbox Live Gold" which is false as every new account comes with a 1 month subscription to Xbox Live Gold. Each console comes with a set number of free months for new accounts. Let me rephrase, a new console will come with the ability for 6 new accounts to each have one free month of gold membership. Critique of the "New Xbox Experience?"

I'm one of the most ardent "anti-advertisement" people on Wikipedia I think, and I have to say that the "New Xbox Experience" section kinda reads like an advertisement. Its mainly in that for all the whining by users that the new layout is rubish on forums, to the critique of it even in popular webcomics (CAD sillies for one), and negative aspects of some reviews, I don't see any sort of criticism of the New Xbox Experience layout.

Especially when at the time the NXE download was heavily criticized, even by gaming magazines. The NXE setup was, and still is, considered inferior to the earlier setup. Avatars were considered and unnecessary annoyance and were seen as a rip-off of Nintendo's Mii characters. No Criticisms?

I find it odd that there was very little mention of anything negative in this article. I was most surprised by no discussion on criticisms of XBox Live concerning the frequently profane nature of communications between users with very little in the way of controls. But there are certainly other criticisms of it as well. Is this simply because nobody has attempted to add an article section on it? Or does Microsoft patrol this article and make sure that any criticisms get removed? I'm not trying to pick a fight, but hey, I think it warrants discussion. Gamertags linked to deactivated Windows Live IDs become impossible to recover

Basically the problem is that if a Windows Live ID is not used regularly, it is deleted from the Windows Live ID (Passport) database. However, the Xbox LIVE Gamertag still thinks it is associated with that non-existant Windows Live ID. The problem is that even if you recreate the Windows Live ID with the same email address that new Windows Live ID doesn't know about the Gamertag in return, making the gamertag unrecoverable or upgradable.

What gets worse is that this creates a catch-22. It is impossible to recover the Gamertag or to change the Windows Live ID associated with the Gamertag because the corresponding Windows Live ID either does not exist or if it is recreated does not point back to the Gamertag. Talking to support, everyone with this issue is told they will never again be able to recover their gamertag as there is currently no way to fix this broken association between the Gamertag and the non-existant or recreated Windows Live ID. Essentially, the gamertag is 'corrupted'

In my personal case I have Xbox 360 Zero Hour assets in my gamertag that I can't recover, but others that are having this problem are faring much worse, including losing their ability to upgrade to Gold Membership and losing their access to their credits that they paid cash for. Note that in some places online it is incorrectly explained that this only applies to Hotmail-based Windows Live IDs, but it applies to all Windows Live IDs as even mine was deleted due to inactivity.

Various statements seem more of the author's opinion rather than just stating the facts. For example:

When referring to the beginning ideas that turned into Xbox Live, the article states "Steve Balmer and Bill gates both had a vision of making overpriced downloads and add-ons that will attract lots of new buying customers to make them money."

When referring to the Microsoft Points given on Xbox Live's 5th anniversary, the article states "This however turned out to be a scam that tricked angry customer into the world of overpriced gaming"

Disagree completely. The policy regarding sexual content on LIVE is orientation-agnostic. The policy is "no sexual content", NOT "no homosexual content". You're intentionally mischaracterizing the situation. The rest of your argument is clearly spacious. The article is overly-negative balanced in my opinion. Gamerscore totals

In this section, it says Halo 3 is the only game with more than 1250G. Gears of War 2 has 1425G, and Fallout 3 has 1350G.

The last sentences should be (no quotes):

Incorrect info RE: Zones

"There are four Gamer Zones; Recreation is for casual gamers, Family is for family-friendly gamers (without profanity, etc.), Pro is for competitive gamers who enjoy a challenge, and Underground ... However, in practice these gamer zones are only displayed on the Gamercard of the player, and don't tend to impact on the gameplay experience or the matching of players in online games."

Is inaccurate. The Zones do affect who you play with, to wit see [6] it says;

"The Zone you join helps tell others the kind of player you are - in fact, they can see it on your Gamercard. It's another step that __ensures you're matched with like-minded players.__"

The word "matched" in this context does not mean "self select".

Further, it says;

"Pick a zone and meet lots of like-minded people."

Ie: You are _matched_ with people from your zone.

This sentence "However, in practice...and don't tend to impact on the gameplay experience or the matching of players in online games." is incorrect.

Thats what they are good for. Achievements and a users Gamerscore is nothing more than that individuals personal "High Score" over time. If you complete a game it does not necessarily indicate that you have completed all aspects of the title. Thats where Achievements come in, an attempt to bridge the gap between simply finishing a game and completing all aspects of one. Xbox Live bans accounts with modified consoles

Should this recent action by microsoft be added to the article? As it appears to effect about 1% of xbox live accounts as depending on source it seems to be ranging between 600,000 to a million users. Apparantly this crackdown follows the availability of pirate copies of modern warfare 2 which became available about a week before the official launch. This seems to be a policy change of microsoft as if i remember when Halo 3 was leaked microsoft banned accounts if they caught the game being played early. Redirect from Halo: Waypoint

There is no reason why Halo: Waypoint should be re-directed here. The Halo: Waypoint is a completely seperate portal on live that applies only to those that play the Halo games (i.e. Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo Wars). Given it doesn't have much to offer yet but it will soon. It should have it's own article, not a redirect to XBOX Live.

Creation of Halo Waypoint

I created Halo Waypoint yesterday while in school because it was dumb for it to not have a wiki when it is in itself it's own application and technically another addition to the Halo series. I also added the link to the dissambiguation. It has several functions that are worth noting. I only made a brief summary of it because I am and was at school and I don't have time. Zune: Gold vs Silver; Video/Music Marketplace

In the table of Gold vs Silver features, Zune is listed as "No" for the Silver-level (free) Live membership level. This is incorrect, as one does not have to have a Gold membership to purchase or rent media via Zune from their Xbox 360. Indeed, as was mentioned above, Zune has replaced Video & Music Marketplaces on Xbox Live. However, some Zune features on Xbox 360 may be available only with a Gold membership; the only example I know of is Movie Parties. Availability misinformation

People keep adding their countries they live in to section of article as "countries that xbox Live coming into soon", but it's not true. I talk about this line (especially Brazil, Greece, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia and South Africa). Pakistan and Romania don't even have have their section on xbox.com forums and stite itself, wile other countries in this list have (i.e. xbox.com/ru-RU/ for Russia, xbox.com/pl-PL/ for poland etc), but Pakistan and Romania are not in this list, as well as they don't have section in Xbox Intenation Forums.

If they don't have their section on xbox.com, they don't have official support in their countries of Xbox itself, as it was in Poland in Russia before Microsoft officialy launched console only in May 2006, same month these countries were added to xbox.com and its forums.

Do you have a ref to back that up? I assume you mean a 3 hour trial subscription, as their free service (which is actually useful, unlike Xbox Live Gold) is open to everyone.

Also, technically with those request templates you are supposed to tell us exactly what you want to change (i.e. the wording you want to use etc.). It doesn't really make that much difference this time, but bear it in mind. Sometimes the request is answered by by random people who go through the list of edit requests, who don't necessarily have enough knowledge on the subject to write it themselves.

Actually it isn't - both "have" and "has" are accepted forms. I believe "has" (referring to the company as an entity) is generally more common in the US, while "have" (referring to the company as a group of people) is more common in the UK. AFAIK though both are accepted forms in both countries (and presumably other English speaking countries), just not used very often. netflix on live free

i recently purchased the xbox w/ kinect and signed up for the free 1 month subscription. Duringthat time I signed up for netflix streaming service. Since that time my gold membership expired. Are you sure? The Kinect didn't come out until the 4th of November in North America (the only place you can get Netflix) so I don't see how the one moth trial could have expired already. Status

I'm not quite sure why (possibly has something to do with the PSN outage), but several editors have recently added "online" to the "status" field of the infobox. I'm not sure what that field is intended for (probably things like "shut down"), but as I see it, info such as current online status is inappropriate for an encyclopædia, at least in the form of an infobox item*. Such info can never be properly sourced (as far as I can tell) as any source is accurate only at the time of writing so cannot possibly reflect the current state. The only exception to this is if MS has a part of xbox.com that states what the online status is. If that is the case, might I suggest adding a link to that page, rather than claiming "online" or "offline" based on it as a source, as the link is not stating one way or another whether it is online or not (while a statement such as "online" does).

* to say "it was shut down at time X" or whatever is fine, but to claim to represent the current status is simply dishonest.

Please discuss further at Template talk:Infobox video game online service instead of here so as to get a broader consensus on the subject (this effects multiple pages).
