Changes I will be making per my class assignment

edit

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

Later this evening or potentially tomorrow morning (depending on how quickly I get my work done tonight), I will update the introductory paragraph so it looks a bit cleaner and highlights that IWT research is still currently limited. I am updating the range of IWT industry worth per a 2021 peer-reviewed article, and removing the products demanded portion at the bottom (I did include a few of the demanded products in my rewrite for an initial example leading into the article) as it feels it does not belong there. It will create a tighter, more appealing look for those first accessing the article.

Additionally, I am completely re-editing the Culture section. I am going to create an initial introduction about how culture plays into IWT, tourism as a conduit of IWT, and that laws prohibiting the use of products that are used in traditional cultures are often ignored by the general public. Additionally, I am adding that globalization, the internet, and the translocation of people from one nation to another have contributed to the appearance of certain items across multiple countries (like traditional Asian medicine).

I then intend to add subheaders of countries with enough data on them to supplement the culture surrounding the IWT. Currently, the section is a giant block of text, and it feels like it goes less into the actual culture that drives IWT.

A good portion of the sources (9 of them) for this section are close to ten years old, plus the entirely uncited portion regarding bushmeat in Africa.

Thanks! Tofuwulf

Merge with poaching?

edit

Should this page be merged with poaching? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Evanmcmike (talkcontribs) 03:02, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Poaching is trespass onto private property to hunt for a personal supply of food. Wildlife smuggling is the trade - usually international - of any sort of wildlife. The difference is economic and geographical. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 06:31, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Some proposed changes

Information to be added or removed: I'd like to add the section below to this page: it is information about an act in Congress right now about wildlife trafficking.

On January 30th, 2019, the Wildlife Conservation & Anti-Trafficking Act was introduced to the 116th Congress by John Garamendi (D-CA) and Don Young (R-CA). Don Young and Madeleine Bordallo (D-GU) originally introduced this act on May 8th, 2018. The Wildlife Conservation & Anti-Trafficking Act strengthens wildlife crime detection through the mandate of whistleblower awards to citizens and NGOs whose reports on wildlife crime result in a successful prosecution. The bill also aims to increase wildlife conservation funding and expand transnational law to combat wildlife crimes at the source.[1]

This bill is supported by a number of prominent wildlife conservation and anti-trafficking NGOs, including the African Wildlife Foundation, the Animal Welfare Institute, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Earth Day Network, the Environmental Investigation Agency, the Humane Society: Legislative Fund, International, and U.S., the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance, the National Whistleblower Center, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Oceana (non-profit group), Panthera Corporation, the Sea Turtle Conservancy, Thinking Animals United, Vulcan, Inc., the Wildlife Conservation Society, Conservation International, the Wildlands Network, and the World Wide Fund for Nature.[2]

Explanation of issue: There's no issue with the above changes: I'd just like to add information about the Wildlife Conservation & Anti-Trafficking Act. • At this stage, the mentioning of HR 864 is done so in order to advocate its passage. The better time to include this claim in the article is once the bill has been passed by the Congress as a whole.
