In class - Acts of Altruism

This week, we will be exploring the alutristic act you'd like to research this term that will help you discover a change or contribution you'd like to make in/to the world. As you work on your proposal and search for Wikipedia articles that you might like to copyedit, please remember that these two projects should support each other. For example, if you are hoping to research how you might be able to help people through your future career, do you see any articles related to your future career/that type of helping? Your Change the World Action Plan and Wikipedia Contributions should harmonize and be in concert together. If you have questions/concerns as you select your topics, don't hesitate to email me or ask in class.

Course meetings
Monday, 8 October 2018   |   Wednesday, 10 October 2018   |   Friday, 12 October 2018
In class - Finding Tenacity & Meaningful Information

This week, we will be visiting the library for an orientation and to roll up our sleeves and answer our pressing research questions! The sources you find to help you build your Change the World Action Plan will also be candidates for your Wikipedia Project (you will be contributing source information to an existing article), so make sure you flag sources you feel might work well for Wikipedia too.

Week 8

Course meetings
Wednesday, 17 October 2018   |   Friday, 19 October 2018
In class - Learning All the Things

This week, we'll be engaging with the sources we've selected for our annotated bibliography, working with citation (MLA for the research paper--we'll be using Wikipedia's citation style for the article to which you contribute) and practicing summary.

Week 9

Course meetings
Monday, 22 October 2018   |   Wednesday, 24 October 2018   |   Friday, 26 October 2018
In class - Re-visioning

This week, you will be polishing your annotated bibliography, and also thinking about what you've learned. Are there any questions unanswered? Information gaps? Maybe more research is needed.

As you finish up your assignment, you will also think about which sources you've collected will serve a Wikipedia article and help improve it with a contribution of 4 sources' information/citations.

Week 10

Course meetings
Monday, 29 October 2018   |   Wednesday, 31 October 2018   |   Friday, 2 November 2018
In class - Contributing to Conversations

This is the week!

You will formally select the Wikipedia article you will contribute 4 resources to (and assign it to yourself in your Wikipedia account), you will compose your contribution and copyedit your contribution (and the article generally), provide and solicit feedback in peer review, and revise your contribution before moving it from your Sandbox to Wikipedia live!

Assignment - Choosing the article to which you'll contribute

Remember, when you are thinking about the sources you could add to an article, you should be selecting sources that were included in your annotated bibliography. No new research should be needed. (If you find yourself struggling with this--maybe you have two or three, but not four, let me know, and we can discuss it/work it out!)

As you develop your contribution to the Wikipedia article you've chosen, remember there are Wikipedia resources to help you:

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
