One paragraph is linked to a website that seems to be an advertisement: "In his book, "The Secret to a Youthful Long Life", Dr. Walker reported that his research showed the mineral rich water that the Vilcabambans drank was key to their long lives and health. Laboratory analysis of the Vilcabamba water determined that the unique balance of enriched colloidal minerals in the local drinking water was ideal for promoting optimum human health. Article in The Guardian edit

I just rec'd an e-mail from a friend that was about this place, "valley of the immortals" and it is to be located in Vilcabamba. I usually investigate before I forward information and in doing so I came across your page asking for "clean up". This web site where I located the original article of my e-mail may help you. Just a thought. http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,2143722,00.html Sincerely, Toni Jobin

Gas Stations edit

I am really not sure where to source a citation about the valley's outlawing of gas stations. It's not a formal law but rather an unspoken agreement amongst the people who live in the valley and the companies that operate there. I only know about it because I lived in Vilcabamba for quite some time and asked one of the village elders one day. This is what he told me; he said that the last time PetroEcuador had tried to put in a station, they met with so much protest and sabotage of the project that they left, and that now the unspoken law is that there will be no gas station in the valley. Seriously?!?! edit

Vilcabamba is a cute little town living with a Monster. The owner of Las Ruinas de Quinara drugs and rapes the people who stay at his hostel. This has been going on for several years and there needs to be an end to it; however, the town is too afraid to do anything because this man is VERY wealthy and extremely dangerous and pays the police to keep quiet about it. People need to know about this because every day there are more International travelers who become vicitms falling into his trap. Please do not erase this message! not old edit

so it seems the residents did not actually reach those incredible high ages, they just bragged about being old. http://geronj.oxfordjournals.org/content/34/1/94.short —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.127.244.197 (talk) 00:14, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dubious sources edit

Some of the sources have problems:

Inconsistencies regarding alleged longevity edit

There are inconsistencies in the article:

  • In the second paragraph of Reputation for longevity it is claimed that The reasons for this claimed longevity are not very clear.
  • The second paragraph also claims antioxidants are a factor.
  • The third paragraph claims enriched colloidal minerals are a factor.
  • Subsequent sections attribute lifespans to age exaggeration.

Given the inconsistencies, the article needs a rewrite using reliable sources. Autarch (talk) 22:02, 10 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
