Requested move edit

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: page moved per WP:SNOW and to fix the WP:MALPLACED disambiguation page arranged during the discussion. -- JHunterJ (talk) 16:03, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Varus (disambiguation)Varus – Disagree with original rationale redirecting Varus. Varus deformity is currently 3 times more popular than Publius Quinctilius Varus on stats.grok.se and I assume that many visitors to the Roman page typed "varus" directly into WP. Am happy for varus to redirect to varus deformity if other users agree, otherwise varus should be the main disambig page. 78.148.148.250 (talk) 01:29, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Disambiguate. Personally, I think a Roman Varus is primary, so I can accept a disambiguation page at the primary location, as there are several Roman Varui 70.24.244.198 (talk) 02:29, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Support making Varus a disambiguation page, and associated changes. Nothing is gained by misdirecting readers through narrow and dubious interpretations of "primary topic".
Notes:
1. The plural appears to be the more regular Vari, not Varui as we see above.
2. It would be better, in cases like this, to state plainly what one intends in voting. "Disambiguate" can be vague here, since both a support vote and an oppose vote might be marked that way.

Noetica, what "narrow and dubious interpretations of 'primary topic'" are you talking about? I see no interpretation that could even possibly be construed as that being applied here. --Born2cycle (talk) 00:42, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Then you need to think again, B2C. As I write, three editors have expressed themselves as follows:
  1. "Personally, I think a Roman Varus is primary, ..."
  2. "No clear primary topic."
  3. "I see no evidence that article currently at Varus is the primary topic." [You yourself.]
I consider 1 very likely to be based on a narrow and dubious interpretation of "primary topic". Since the term is used a lot in these discussions and may well turn up again here, I seek to preempt any more of those by suggesting that "primary topic" be interpreted with broad good sense, and especially with an understanding of readers' needs. There is much to fix in our titling policy, and much to fix in people's understanding and excessively legalistic, algorithmic, and mechanical application of it. If policy is served at the expense of utility and readers' convenience, then something is deeply wrong. This may be a place to note that (I will continue to direct people toward the real needs of readers wherever the matter rises); but in the end such things must be dealt with directly at relevant talkpages for policy and guidelines. Next time, in good order and with the widest and most open-minded community consultation. That has not happened yet; and there is a good deal of material that enjoys at best local consensus from coteries of enthusiasts. Like earlier days at WP:MOS, which are well behind us now.

  • Support moving the disambiguation page to Varus. No clear primary topic. olderwiser 18:47, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Support dab page at Varus. I see no evidence that article currently at Varus is the primary topic. --Born2cycle (talk) 00:42, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
