These two articles are basically on the same thing, bareback simply originates in gay slang, but has since crossed over, furthermore unprotected sex isnt a strong enough stand-alone, but it is a better more encyclopedic title, bareback/barebacking can be a redirect to unprotected sex. Yes, please merge. It's correct that the term bareback began within gay slang, but is now much more widely used to describe unprotected sex, be it vaginal or anal. To me it would make sense to use the title Unprotected sex, with a paragraph or section making reference to the term bareback. kevinbrighton kevinbrighton 18:25, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Don't Merge

"Barebacking" is a term specific to anal sex in the gay community, whereas "unprotected sex" includes anal, vaginal and oral sex in general. The use of the term "barebacking" does not normally refer to vaginal or oral sex, and is therefore does not warrant merging. Although "barebacking" is a form of unprotected sex, the unique use of the term amongst gay men is the most compelling reason that it should be maintained as a separate listing.

Comment

While not common usage in the general population, the fertility awareness community frequently uses the definition "no birth control" rather than "no condom". This is because couples avoiding pregnancy with FAM only use birth control for a portion of the women's menstrual cycle; there is a need to distinguish between reliance on an external method (use of birth control) vs. reliance on the woman's infertility (unprotected sex). Barebacking should be combined into unprotected sex

Yep, I agree. Plus barebacking appears to be more concerned with homosexual anal sex whereas the term "unprotected sex" mostly refers to heterosexual sex especially when considering the contraction of HIV/AIDS. So this article should be kept separate and expanded beyond stub-class. Ekantik ^talk 06:18, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Barebacking is not specific anal sex

Whoever posted the topic about not merging is incorrect. Barebacking has nothing specifically to do with "anal sex" just because the word "back" is in it. It's simply slang for sexual intercourse without a condom.

Barebacking is widely regarded and has its origens as a sexual term in reference to anal sex, especially amoung gay men. Oral sex is not seen as bareback territory since 99% of people don't even occur to them to use a condom for such a low risk activity which is not often seen as "sex". Gay men don't have vaginal sex, therefore anal sex is the only unprotected sex which two men can have. Its from gay slang. There is some and perhaps growing non-gay lingo usage of teh term, but it predominantly is used to describe condomless anal sex between two men.

First, photographic images of people having sex are not used on Wikipedia in general. Paintings and line drawings are preferred, as in sexual intercourse. Second, the image did not add information or help make more understandable the information in the article. Drugs

I think that penicillin might be a more sourceable example of a drug which can be transmitted through sexual contact.[1] WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:01, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't know that a specific drug is going to be a likely navigation target for someone who ends up at this page. The point of a disambiguation page is to get a reader to the page they're looking for, not to define the term. Maybe Transmission (medicine) would be a more appropriate target for that line? You may take my point that way, but I did not intend it that way. My intention was to propose changing the last line to Sex without protection from sexual transmission of an allergen or teratogen. Lyrl^Talk _C 23:13, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
