Recommendation

When NC 44 is decommissioned a second time in favor of US 70 Bypass, I recommend keeping this page and banner it as US 70 Bypass going forward. There is enough material to keep this separate from the other bannered US 70 routes. Should only take a few redirect changes and former NC 44 will be shifted to the history section. So when is the highway decommissioned? It does seem like a lot to add to the other article, but if there is no such highway, there shouldn't be an article with the title, but a redirect to either a section or a US 70 Bypass article. I don't know how this is supposed to work, but it doesn't seem like an important enough highway for its own article. Although if it were an interstate with a 3-digit number, yes, it would be.

I wrote that comment two months before legislation passed on making the route an interstate. I don't think we can jump over to Interstate 42 just yet because nothing is signed yet, so I still believe we should go with the original proposal I gave is to leave the article as its own but as U.S. Route 70 Bypass (Goldsboro, North Carolina). I don't recommend incorporating it with U.S. Route 70 in North Carolina, because U.S. Route 70 did not change; Goldsboro now has US 70, US 70 Business and US 70 Bypass. I would believe NC 44 is now decommissioned as of the opening of the final section of the bypass, but NCDOT has not posted official documents on that just yet (might be a month or two).

• Oppose for now. According to https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/counties/johnston-county/article259467844.html "NCDOT has not yet decided when it will put up the familiar red and blue shields for I-42 and redo the mile markers to reflect the interstate’s length". In other words, it sounds like I-42 is still currently an unsigned, official hidden designation. I'm not supporting until they at least modify the signs like this one and this one and that one, and thus would indicate that the I-42 designation should be the more common name than U.S. Route 70 Bypass. Wait until signage is on the ground. Right now its a "hidden" designation, and we should treat it like we do other such unsigned interstates, such as I-595 (MD) and others. --Jayron32 13:44, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

General Discussion about I-42

I understand that consensus on the issue is too early but I would like to offer a different opinion. Reading between the lines, it now seems that there're two different article which claim to be the I-42, this article and U.S. Route 70 in North Carolina. The Interstate was also designated by the FAST Act which means that it is a high propriety corridor like I-87 which has its own article. All in all, I believe the split should be done soon and us waiting for this long after the Goldsboro Bypass was officially designated as I-42 is just now for the sake of waiting. • ​​​​I'm fine with waiting if others concur, but I oppose using U.S. Route 70 Bypass (Goldsboro, North Carolina) as the I-42 article (i.e. renaming this page). The current article covers only one small part of I-42 and contains extraneous info on historical NC 44 that is unrelated to I-42. The U.S. Route 70 in North Carolina, where Interstate 42 currently redirects, contains two largish sections of sourced text (§ Future: Raleigh to Morehead City and § Future Interstate 42) as well as (implicitly) much of the § Major intersections table. No matter what happens, a lot of cutting-and-pasting will occur. Better to paste the I-42 info into the "clean" I-42 redirect than to paste it top of an NC 44 cum local US 70 bypass article that is of a different nature and scope. The former is how the NC I-87 article started life back in '13 courtesy of one of the discussants above. Such a solution also would not require waiting for re-signing to create an article either. Repurposing muddies the edit history and misrepresents where most of the I-42 edit activity has occurred so far (i.e. relevant sections of U.S. Route 70 in North Carolina). —  AjaxSmack  20:31, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Just rename this article Interstate 42 or make a new clean article. This article does cover a lot. Make the Interstate 42 draft redirect to this when the time is right. This article is specific to this particular U.S. Route 70 Bypass, especially since it will eventually become I-42. As for any other special routes of US 70, they would be found here. I personally am not familiar with a 1957 route, but if I had to guess then that is the current US 70 route through Goldsboro, which has not changed. --WashuOtaku (talk) 21:09, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
