editMy Grandfather was a crewman on the O9 in 1927-1930 and again when it was recommissioned. He missed the fatal dive due to being in the hospital with Shingles.
O9 was considered unsafe
editMy father, Frank W. Reed witnessed the sinking of the O9. He arrived at the New London submarine base in 1941 and was assigned to join the crew of a training sub. There were two submarines needing yeoman at the time, the O9 and O10. When he reported to the chief in charge of submarine assignments he was given the choice of the two submarines. He asked which sub the chief would recommend and the chief replied, "I wouldn't touch the O9 with a ten foot pole". The O9 was plagued with problems and considered by many to be unsafe to sail. The O9 and O10 were performing training dives when my father said the O9 suddenly broached the surface. It then sank beneath the waves but never surfaced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.105.6.213 (talk) 21:52, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
