Since original research is not admissible, I'll just put this here. I went to Mare Island Naval Shipyard (decomissioned) yesterday, and saw the Holland there, fenced off in one of their old dry docks. Looking a little rusty, but you could see a shadow of its former utilitarian nature. If I had a submarine, I would definitely take it to the USS Holland for repair! Who was first? edit
This article says "USS Holland (AS-32) was a submarine tender launched by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Company in Pascagoula, Mississippi on 19 January 1963. The first ever built specifically to service Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines (SSBNs) ..."
A similar article says "USS Hunley (AS-31) was a submarine tender of the United States Navy launched on 28 September 1961 and commissioned 16 June 1962. The Hunley was designed to tend most of the long-term requirements of the Polaris Class of submarines."
The Holland was commissioned on 7 September 1963, while the Hunley was commissioned on 16 June 1962.

- I think I see the confusion. The Hunley article states, "The Hunley was designed to tend most of the long-term requirements of the Polaris Class of submarines." While the Holland article states,"The first ever built specifically to service Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines (SSBNs) ..." The difference is whether they service Polaris or FBMs. MR2David (talk) 22:10, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
- I've been on both the Hunley and the Holland. They are (were) identical for all intents and purposes. As for the difference between Polaris and FBM, there is none. Update: Holland (AS-32) was sold for scrap. She was towed from Suisin Bay 10 July 2013 to Mare Island dry docks. Typical clean-up period before turnover.. [1] MR2David (talk) 22:10, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
