re Home Port Change
editI came to be homeported at Long Beach in July 1983 on FFG-37 and Bristol County was not there, so the shift to San Diego was prior to that. The only LST I remember for sure at LB was Racine, and possibly Fresno. I transferred to Bristol County in October 1985 but don't recall hearing about the shift at the time leading me to believe it was old news by then.RZid 05:13, 1 May 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by RZid (talk • contribs)
Home port...
I was stationed aboard the "B.C." in early October of 1981. I arrived immediately after A School to participate in "Amphibian Refresher Training" stationed in SanDiego. We soon left on the first of two westpacs in the 3.5 years I was stationed on her sigs bridge. During both deployments we were under the command of CMDR C.A. Weegar, who was promoted to full bird captain prior to our second deployment, making us senior to most ships in our sqadron. Ports of call included Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, Sasebo,Pusan, Subic Bay, Malaysia, Perth, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and a few other whistle stops for operations and exercises.
I was also onboard Nov of 1984 (not 83) when she took a 52° roll in very heavy seas west of Adak Alaska (way west) ...
I was discharged from active duty in April of 85 while the B.C. was in drydock @ San Diego. SHIPSHAPE IN BRISTOL FASHION!!! SM3 Pohlman USS Bristol County LST - 1198 (NQQY) lancelot35@Yahoo.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.86.185.165 (talk) 07:09, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
I looked in the Navy site for ships history and found that it had been moved from Long Beach to San Diego sometime in 1980. I arrived in October 1980 as the Assistant Suppo and then fleeted up to Suppo. Left in 1983 right after the FleetEx. I remember the wave and roll. Caused a mess on board and the LHA we were beside suffered a buckled deck. Turns out that that operations almost caused a nuclear confrontation with the Soviet Union. They were convinced that we were planning a sneak attack. Later that year a larger exercise caused both sides to go to Defcon 1. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pisanond (talk • contribs) 15:55, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
