Perhaps this article needs to mention or link to the USSR's predecessors & successors.

A bit of looking things up // thinking on it (a mess, so not added to the article):

Geography of chess and FIDE have the strongest list of FIDE chess organizations and timeline. There's also the ICCF (Correspondence Chess) federations.

A few of the member Republics/nations of the USSR Chess Federation had prior groups (1920's) which remained intact throughout the era of USSR. With the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, several member republics reorganized or reestablished federations.
