Adding external links edit

Toremag 12:38, 3. October 2006

I suggest that noone put up external links to any page that advertises this fungus as good food as it is poisonous. Sites that do are plenty, so please be aware of this!

Far as I can tell, what happens is an overdose of a toxin that is normally not troublesome (cf. hypervitaminosis A and Mercury in fish), though there is a general need for better research in this area. One study (PMID 16446499), in fact, explicitly notes "Despite these novel findings, the fact remains that the consumption of these wild mushrooms has been considered safe for millennia. In fact, the results also enforce previous findings that the harmful effects probably require prolonged daily exposure and high amounts of ingested mushroom to manifest." From ip 193.6.63.109 edit

"The poison in this mushroom has remained unknown. The basic mechanism of poisoning should be rhabdomyolysis, damaging of the cell membrane of skeletal muscle fibres. As a result of this, the oxygen-carrying muscular protein myoglobin is released and appears in urine. Hence the two main symptoms, muscle weakness and the brownish coloration of the urine."

I have removed the above edit from the "see also" section (probably should have been in the "toxicity" section). Since I cannot vouch for its veracity (I know little or nothing of the subject), I thought it best to add it here for expert attention. Thanks, Hamamelis (talk) 10:16, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I have amended and reinserted this contribution, cited to a fairly recent review. Sasata (talk) 16:54, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
