Here's a reply to the same question on Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous
Thomas Jean Stieltjes, a Dutch mathematician. I'd pronounce it something like "steel-tyes", with stress on the first sillable. There's a slight possibility that an actual Dutchman might tell you something different, though.-- 17:41, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

I was told - again by someone from the Netherlands - that the "t" is silent ("as in Harlow"?): so "Steel-yes" might be a slightly better approximation. Hair Commodore 19:33, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Both kinda right, kinda wrong. It's STEEL-chuss and try to pronounce the second syllable as if there is no vowel there. (talk) 10:01, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Splitting up Stieltjes Jr and Stieltjes SrEdit

According to this sentence from the MacTutor Archive:

"In fact the dictionary of biography of famous people from the Netherlands which I [EFR] consulted before writing this biography contained a two page entry concerning Thomas Stieltjes, the father, while there was only a single paragraph on his son, Thomas Stieltjes the mathematician."

It may be worth splitting up the articles as a full article on Stieltjes Sr could turn out to be quite substantial. Any thoughts? CloudNine 15:51, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

It should be mentioned that, of the many approximations for the factorial function and its lograrithm, the one devised by Stieltjes is one of the very best in terms of accuracy and efficiency. (talk) 23:59, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

I did a quick search with Google, but I found nothing about how Stieltjes died. Does anyone know?Vincent (talk) 15:15, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

What is the correct middle name?Edit

All four of the sources cited in this article say "Jan", yet the article gives it as "Joannes". What is the source for this form of the name? 2601:C6:4100:F980:311B:D1CF:A334:9236 (talk) 15:48, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
