Cleveland Street

This statement in the article seems a bit odd:

"The author's name is that of a male prostitute who featured in the Cleveland Street scandal, and other participants in that affair appear as characters."

As the book was published in 1881 and the Cleveland Street Scandal happened eight years later in 1889 it is hard to see how the names of participants in the affair gave their names to the characters! What is true is that people who were involved in the Boulton and Park case of 1871 appear as characters in the book. Some confusion here? Colin4C (talk) 12:40, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Reference Melissa Hope Ditmore, "Encyclopedia of Prostitution and Sex Work", Greenwood Publishing Group, 2006, ISBN 0313329680, p.442 says "purportedly the memoir of Jack Saul who later testified in London's infamous Cleveland Street affair". I see...the character "Jack Saul" in the story is based on the real Jack Saul who is later involved in the Cleveland Street scandal. Which makes me think that the story might be true...By the way Boulton and Park appear in the story under their real names as well as under their female pseudonyms. I don't have the original but Montgomery Hyde quotes extensively from it: "Boulton was superbly got up as a beautiful lady, and I observed Lord Arthur was very spooney about "her"...Park was there as a lady, dancing with a gentleman from the City..." (A History of Pornography pages 140-1). (Ashbee refers to "Bolton" and Park appearing in the story in my edition of his work, though in the original text of the story it is definitely "Boulton". Did you know 'Jack Saul' redirects to this article? Me neither. Anyways... an article now exists for the real John Saul (prostitute) on whom he was based. (The first line of the article states he may have also been known as Jack Saul and Dublin Jack.) Should the redirect now go to the BIO or continue to redirect to here i.e. to his alleged MEMOIRS?
