Fair use rationale for Image:The Sign of the Beaver.jpg edit

Image:The Sign of the Beaver.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:43, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Offensive" opinion removed. edit

I removed the sentence, "despite the author's offensive portrayal of Native Americans." This is clearly subjective and not the least bit factual. What the writer finds offensive, another does not and so it should be removed. On the other hand, the section "Criticisms" discusses views of Native Americans and lists their belief that the book is offensive. That is precisely where it belongs and exactly how the subject should be presented. Opinion does not belong in any article (except for instances such as "Criticisms") and never should have been written in there to begin with. MagnoliaSouth (talk) 05:50, 30 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Criticisms" updated edit

After thoroughly reading through the original source material for the "criticims" I concluded that the word "offensive" once again was not uttered once. Instead, I rewrote the sentence with facts so that the readers may decide for themselves what they think and not to be preached to. I also added some information on the organization of Oyate and pointed out that one writer for Oyate made this conclusion. It's all factual and I think it best represents their opinion. I improved the citation as well. Now that I consider it, "Cricisms" should actually be singular since only one opinion is discussed, until other opinions are added. I think I'll go back and change that too. MagnoliaSouth (talk) 17:20, 30 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately the Oyate website is undergoing changes and all of its reviews are missing. The current criticism section needs better writing and less of the obvious snarky attitude. Consider also that the Oyate website was intended to seek out and identify racism and unfair portrayals of Native Americans in books, and "The Sign of the Beaver" possessed much of both.75.41.70.118 (talk) 07:42, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

the baby's sex edit

"In the winter, Matt's family finally returned, though Matt's little sister (who he hadn't met) died."

Nowhere in the book did I see it say that the baby was a girl. On page 132, Matt asks, "The baby---did you leave it behind?" And the father responds, "The little one only lived five days." I'm wondering where it says it was a girl.98.116.33.120 (talk) 01:15, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
