Involuntary termination of employmentTermination of employment – To return to the original page title instead of a duplicate of Dismissal (employment). Other details on talk page. --Relisted. George Ho away from home (talk) 20:12, 29 April 2015 (UTC) Closeapple (talk) 08:43, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

I propose the following:

  • This article should be moved back to "Termination of employment" or be moved to something equivalent like "Employment separation".
  • Any involuntary-specific details worth retaining from this article should be merged into "Dismissal (employment)".
  • It appears that any attempt to source the existing WP:OR content has been abandoned, and it has been tagged for rewrite for years now. So this article can probably just be made into a stub, with sub-topics described, until proper content can be added.

The confusion seems to have been caused by the following sequence of events:

  1. This page was created on 2004-04-22, with the name "Termination of employment". It was about all forms of employment separation, including voluntary and involuntary.
  2. On 2004-07-24, the other page, with the name "Firing", was created as a redirect to this article, but it was turned into its own full article on 2008-01-18, and was moved to "Dismissal (employment)" by SchuminWeb (talk · contribs) on 2010-07-29.
  3. On this page on 2011-09-27, an anonymous IP deleted the (unsourced) section titled "Voluntary termination" (see [1]). On 2011-12-19, Jonkerz (talk · contribs) removed the section title from the "Involuntary termination" section (see [2]). I placed a hatnote about the missing voluntary employment information on 2013-03-15; on 2013-06-17 my hatnote was moved down into a section instead.
  4. Meanwhile, some interwikis links were added to each page over time. I assume that, because there are two articles that used to be different topics then got refactored to appear to be the same topic in the lead, people from different languages picked the one they found first, conflating the two.
  5. On Wikidata, two items were created: d:Q685744 for "termination of employment" in English, and d:Q17052147 for "dismissal" in English. But since the interwiki links were conflated, properties and more Wikipedia articles that should be d:Q17052147 were added to d:Q685744 instead, probably by people who were depending on the non-English versions for hints instead of the English wording, and by bots.
  6. On 2014-06-10, Lulaq (talk · contribs) moved the page to "Involuntary termination of employment", apparently not noticing that "Dismissal (employment)" already existed or that the page still had sections with paragraphs about voluntary termination and termination issues in general.

If there is no objection, I intend to move the article (or request "Termination of employment" from an administrator since it requires overwriting a redirect) and/or remake the article. --Closeapple (talk) 08:47, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Agree. This sounds fine, for the reasons you cite. I recommend that you describe and link to Dismissal (employment) in this article, in the summary style, since dismissal is a relevant kind of termination. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:21, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Support per nom. There is no good reason to keep this convoluted structure. bd2412 T 17:18, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
