Hey you two, why the fighting? Let's stop this edit warring and talk it out. I found Talk:Melville Island (Nova Scotia)#Infobox today. Two editors fighting over infoboxes on two separate pages? Bizarre bizarre. Anyway, at first I was on the fence about the whole infobox thing. I love infoboxes as much as the next guy, but I don't know if I'd call the Teen Age Message a "news event". At least I haven't been able to find any news articles from 2001 about it. But then I read Br'er Rabbit's argument on the Melville Island talk page, and he may have convinced me. I think an infobox might be the way to go, especially for those people who just came to the article to pick out important facts. Is there perhaps a more appropriate box than {{infobox news event}}? I'll take a look and think about it. There must be a guideline somewhere. Meantime, I'm interested to hear why you support or oppose it. Braincricket (talk) 03:46, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Eh, I'm having a hard time finding an infobox that lends itself to the article. Almost none of the articles in Category:Interstellar messages have them (I know that's not a great reason to omit one here). I've looked through Category:Radio infobox templates, Category:Technology and applied science infobox templates, and Category:Science and nature infobox templates, but it's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. It doesn't matter that the infobox is called "Infobox event"; it could just as easily be called "Infobox foo" or "infobox bag of bananas"; the fields used are appropriate for this article. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:03, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

I realize that the template's name doesn't matter per se. I just wonder if {{infobox news event}} contains enough of the fields which are important in characterizing an interstellar radio message to ETs. In addition to date, location, and participants, relevant info might include content, encoding, target stars, signal frequency, strength, and duration. The current box seems to be geared for mass shootings, disasters, and other tragedies, which is why I was looking for another one. Braincricket (talk) 10:51, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Braincricket, Glad you like my views. If this template proves insufficient there's alwasy {{infobox}}, which is quite extensible. That's really an implementation issue. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 10:58, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Audio files of the message?

It's nice that aliens can listen to these theremin sounds as early as 2047, I think it would also be nice if a human on earth right now could hear them. The external link "Listen to six Theremin melodies as recorded for the Theremin concert" used to have them but the site doesn't exist anymore. Site is archived on archive.org but the audio files aren't. Someone apparently tried to upload gershwin_summertime_kavina.wav to Commons but was denied due to copyright (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2016/01 ctrl-f "gershwin"). If someone knows where to find these recordings it would be nice to add them to this article. Th55 (talk) 15:53, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
