The Indian Cricket Team recently won the World Cup, the final being held on 2 April, 2011. They had last won in 1983. There has been a lot of discussion within cricketing nations on what makes this team different from previous teams. One key factor has been the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and key performances by many players, like Suresh Raina, all of whom come from small towns and were discovered via the Talent Resource Development Wing initiative (this page). Most Indian Cricket players who played for the national team in the past tended to come from large cities, but this has changed in recent years after the mentioned initiative was started. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been India's most successful cricket captain till date, taking India to the Number 1 position in Test Cricket, and to victories in this World Cup and the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup (Twenty20 is a shorter, faster version of the game). Cricket is the pre-eminent sport in India, with hundreds of millions of dedicated fans. In terms of sponsors, media interest, international tournaments, and sports leagues, it dwarfs all other sports in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is one of the richest sporting bodies in the world. The world's best cricket players play in the Indian Premier League, including some Indian players scouted via this initiative. Outside India, Cricket is avidly played and watched in all the Commonwealth countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and the Caribbean nations. So even in general, as a sports talent-scouting initiative, this topic is of value. But in particular, considering the present prominence of these cricketers and the success of this team, the subject comes into even sharper focus.
If the above explanation is found insufficient, this editor requests that the views of some more editors from cricket-playing nations be solicited before deciding on deletion. Sports tend to be localized within country-clusters, and views of a sport's importance will differ greatly within and outside such a cluster. This editor, for instance, knows next to nothing about Ice Hockey, Australian Rules Football, Baseball, or Netball, sports that are not yet popular in India. Multiple perspectives will lead to a fuller view and balanced content. VishalB (talk) 20:46, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Read the CSD A7 criteria more closely. I had earlier confused "Indication of Importance" with "Importance," thus with Notability. Hence the above long-winded explanation. Have now edited the article to supply more context in the introduction, keeping in mind that all users will not be familiar with Cricket. There is some indication of importance now. More can be added, but then the article would become top heavy, considering it's a short article at present.VishalB (talk) 21:56, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
