I am in the process of creating a Chinese language page for the Swans on the Chinese Wikipedia; would anyone like to suggest as to what I should put on it?{{subst:image source|Image:2005AFLGrandFinalLogo.png)) Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 23:28, 24 May 2007 (UTC) {{missing rationale2|Image:2005AFLGrandFinalLogo.pngReply

Fair use rationale for Image:Sydney80s.png edit

Image:Sydney80s.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hall edit

There is a line in the article which states that Hall played in the shadow of Lockett in his twilight years. Hall joined Sydney in 2002, and Lockett retired in 1999. Furthermore, I don't believe they ever played together at St Kilda. Am I reading the line wrongly, or should it be corrected?

Lockett came out of retirement and played three games in 2002, but I would agree that saying Hall played in Lockett's shadow seems a bit much. It might make more sense if understood in terms of reputation. JPD (talk) 08:58, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. It's the "twilight years" bit that throws me, suggesting it was Lockett playing with Hall rather than the shadow of his achievements (which even then would be debatable).

I have removed the clause about Lockett's shadow, but the end of the sentence "in his own right" now seems a bit strange. Hall was at first in Lockett's shadow in terms of his reputation in Sydney, which is most relevant to the "cult figure" claim, but I cant' see an easy way to rewrite the sentence. JPD (talk) 09:48, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I had a go at working around that, outlining that the comparisons were obvious and that Hall had much to live up to, which makes the "in his own right" part make a bit more sense - ie. he no longer has to live up to the achievements of Lockett, but can be appreciated for what he has done himself. Sydney vs West Coast edit

Is it really accepted the rivalry has ended? 12 points is still a close game, and the match was still extremely tight with scores level at half-time. I just don't think that it'd be ok to say the rivalry has ended, until one of them wins by 4 or 5 goals. 220.239.227.179 (talk) 07:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

The trend referred to in the article was matches being decided by less than a goal. That trend definitly ended and the section needs rewriting, although it is true that the game was still tight. As for the rivalry between the teams, that is about how fans and others percieve each other, not he objective results, so while close matches should ensure it keeps going, even a 60-point thrashing wouldn't necessarily end it. JPD (talk) 14:20, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't accept that this rivalry is "one of the greatest in VFL/AFL history". 2 years of close games doesn't remotely compare to the rivalries between Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood, which extend for over 100 years, and from before the VFL. 6 years on from 2006, I doubt many people would even view the two clubs as having much of a rivalry compared with any two other AFL clubs. I've added a "citation needed" but the nature of sports journalists probably means one could be found from 2006. If anything, I think the section should be re-written to just say that that for that period of time, they had a close rivalry with West Coast. --Owheelj (talk) 12:52, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Official Name edit

What is the Official club name? On this page it has Sydney Australian Football Club. On the AFL page someone just changed it to Sydney Swans Australian Football Club. An ASIC names search shows that Sydney Swans Limited seems to be the operating company name. (Name SYDNEY SWANS LIMITED ACN 063 349 708 ABN 48 063 349 708). The club website has nothing that I can find about it. So what is correct? The-Pope (talk) 14:57, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Whatever happened to South Melbourne Football Club - the name? edit

Searching for South Melbourne Football Club in Wikipedia takes me to an article about what I know historically as the the South Melbourne Hellas soccer club. They claim now to be the South Melbourne Football Club. Has the soccer club really taken legal possession of the South Melbourne Football Club name? HiLo48 (talk) 07:57, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Salary Cap Breaches edit

Breaches of the salary cap regulations are as follows:

In 1987, Sydney were fined the maximum of $60,000 and forfeited their first round pick in the National Draft after a VFL investigation found that they had exceeded the salary cap by $1.15 million during the season. The salary cap for that season was $1.25 million.
In 1992, Sydney were fined $50,000 after it was found that they had failed to disclose payments made to former player Greg Williams during the 1990 season; Williams was suspended for six matches and fined the maximum of $25,000 for accepting the payments.[4]

In 1995, Sydney were fined $20,000 after key documents relating to player financial details and star full-forward Tony Lockett's contract details were lost in the post by club officials, forcing the club, who had won the last three wooden spoons, to scratch from the 1995 pre-season draft and play the season two players short.[7] The club officials responsible for this error were fired by the Swans one week later.
