Club Song edit

Can we get the information on why the club song can not be put into this entry. I have seen it now put in twice and removewd twice due to copyright issues. I think it would be good to have it in the article if we can. Is it the Sydney Swans or the AFL or other who object to it being published here?

Check out Wikipedia:Lyrics_and_poetry for more information on why copyrighted lyrics can't be used without the explicit permission of the owners of that copyright.--The Brain of Morbius 01:00, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
You'll find it is linked from the infobox, the song is not just used by the Swans hence it doesn't belong in the article itself.--Rulesfan 04:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rivalries edit

I note that the article currently suggests that the Swans share a bitter rivalry with the Brisbane Lions. Speaking as a Lions supporter myself, I find this doubtful. If anything the Swans would be the second team of many Brisbane supporters even if only as fellow northern-staters; AFL success in Sydney has flow-on effects to Queensland in terms of improved media coverage of the game. I'd have thought Sydney has a much greater rivalry with clubs such as Collingwood or the Kangaroos before you'd even mention Brisbane.--The Brain of Morbius 00:51, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Removed the word 'bitter'. As a Swans fan, I felt the word was an inaccurate description of the relationship between the two clubs. --  B.d.mills  (T, C) 06:44, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't agree more. Brisbane would be my second team most of the time, and most people from Brisbane that I met were supporting Sydney. That doesn't stop the Swans-Lions games being big events, but it isn't bitter. JPD 10:07, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Brisbane rivalry is new to me. I think the most obvious, and most recent, rivalry is with the Kangaroos.. they tried to move to Sydney in around 1999 I think, which provoked the "Boo a Roo" campaign which was the official slogan the Swans used when tryign to sell seats to its members for the Roos home games. At the time, there was REAL tension between the clubs. Sydney fans disliked the Roos Captain, Wayne Carey, very much. This rivalry has cooled though. Swans don't have too many "rivals". I'd say we probably like to beat Collingwood more than anyone, but thats a competition wide thing.--Mikenosilly 07:45, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Errors and omissions edit

Errors edit

  • Finals appear to be categorised as preliminary finals and the Grand Final. This is incorrect, because the only finals that are actually called preliminary finals are the finals that are played in the week before a Grand Final. Under the current Final Eight system, the finals are Qualifying Finals (week 1), Elimination Finals (week 1), Semi Finals (week 2), and Preliminary Finals (week 3). --  B.d.mills  (T, C)
  • The crowd for the final against Geelong at the SCG in 2005 was not the largest Australian football crowd at that venue. There have been a few occasions where over 40,000 have attended an Australian Football match at the SCG. --  B.d.mills  (T, C)
I have corrected this again, putting in the correct record. JPD 10:07, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • Rugby league is not native to Sydney, and to call it the native/traditional/whatever sporting code is to ignore cricket and other non-football sports. I changed the wording to "traditional football code" JPD 10:07, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • I also removed specualtion about future WC-Syd rivalry. Not only is it speculation, but we could write about many rivalries simply based on recent encounters, that will fade with time. JPD 10:07, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Omissions edit

  • The 2005 finals series only describes the Grand Final. The Swans played in a total of four finals over the four weeks of the 2005 finals series, and a brief paragraph for each of the three missing matches is warranted. Three of the four finals matches involving the Swans were decided by less than a goal with the last play of the game being decisive in all of them. --  B.d.mills  (T, C) 07:02, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I tend to agree, but I am not sure why the section as a whole is there. The premiership is already mentioned more than one earlier in the article. It doesn't appear normal to go into detail on the clubs most recent season on each club's page. Most of the material should either be included earlier in the article, or go somewhere like 2005 AFL Finals Series or even 2005 AFL Grand Final. Wherever they are, they should avoid journalistic style and phrases like "surely vindicated". JPD 10:07, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Celebrity supporters edit

Is this section necessary? Apart from not being a very important aspect of the club, it is always going to be open to all sorts of debate. JPD 15:25, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hey, the Brisbane Lions have a page for them, so why not fire back? Besides, it has been documented many times that at LEAST Morris Iemma is a diehard fan. --J L C Leung 00:58, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Fair comment, but I would argue that neither page should have this section. If such a list is worth having, I think it is more appropriate on a separate page, as in the Brisbane Lions case. JPD 08:43, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I agree that I think it should be removed. I couldn't care less which celeb's support the swans and it is very open to debate, and what happens if they decide to change their support? Remove it or put it on it's own page is my vote! Anubis1975 10:51, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I will transfer it to another page right away then. :) --J L C Leung 03:24, 12 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
They all should go in the master list List of celebrity supporters of AFL clubs which is linked off the Australian Football League page.--Rulesfan 04:37, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ladder Position edit

OK, I'll agree to using the end of season positions, but I'd like to know where this info is being referenced from? Also, using end of season figures, B.Halls goals for 2005 is wrong. I'll change it. Anubis1975 11:44, 13 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I don't know what the original sources were. The honour roll at the Swans site doesn't have the positions or number of goals. I went through it about a week ago, and everything before 1996 was the end of season position, and from 1996 it was mixed, with some years having the final ladder position, so I corrected them. I haven't seen anywhere with a list of final positions, but sites like [1] have details of all the finals matches, as well as the ladder positions. (The records from the early years on that site are quite anachronistic, though.) JPD 09:09, 14 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

2006 Season edit

What do people think about a round by round table of the 2006 season being maintained in this article? Anubis1975 11:48, 13 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I am unsure whether it should be in this article, or in a separate article. At any rate, it's still a long way off now! JPD 09:09, 14 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Just in case people have missed it.. here tis... Sydney Swans 2006 Season -- Anubis1975 05:31, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Big crowds edit

While the average crowds for Swans games are higher than for rugby league games it should be noted that there are nine NRL teams located in Sydney. Perhaps a comparison should be made to other sports where there is only one team in town such as the Waratahs, Sydney FC and Sydney Kings. Soundabuser 13:43, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

No comparison is a completely fair one, but pyou are probably right that the nubmer of teams should be mentioned if that sentence has to stay at all. (Have you forgotten about the West Sydney Razorbacks, though?) JPD (talk) 15:16, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

I was hoping to find some information about the design of the current logo for Sydney Opera House. Stating that the logo is based on the opera house is WP:OR - does anyone have any press information from when the current logo was launched which may be useful at Sydney Opera House#Symbolism?Garrie 23:22, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
