Discrepancy edit
There's a discrepancy in the number of fatalities. The article currently says 176 with 11 survivors, which is supported by sources like ASN.[1] But the final report, or at least the reproduction available in ICAO Circular 262 [2], Section 3.2 Injuries to Persons lists the total fatalities as 178, with 9 survivors. It also says in Section 3.15 Survival Aspects, "15 survivors where pulled from the wreckage of whom 7 (seven) died later. One child was found outside the wreckage". I assume the child wasn't included with the 15 survivors from the wreckage, otherwise there would be a discrepancy within the final report itself of either 8 or 9 survivors. Is it possible that the count is often reported as 176 because two more survivors died days, weeks, or even months after that number was first reported? Interestingly, the NTSB brief of accident on June 7, 1989 lists 174 fatalities [3], and an NTSB recommendation published on April 24, 1990 states "Only 11 persons survived the accident; 175 persons were fatally injured".[4] The later doesn't even match up with the number of occupants, which is otherwise consistently 187, although it does suggest the investigation was still ongoing at the time of its publication.
