Scott's American mile records edit

I took the liberty of clearing up some confusion about Steve Scott's American mile record which was broken by Alan Webb yesterday. That record stood for 25 years 14 days, but Scott's 3:47.69 had broken his OWN American record in the mile, set a year earlier, also at Oslo, when he finished in 3:49.67 (or was it .68?) behind Steve Ovett. So, Scott actually held the American mile record - undisputed - from July 11th (I think), 1981 to yesterday. I say "Undisputed" because when Scott finished second to Sebastian Coe on July 17 1979 when Coe set a new mile record of 3:48.95, he ran 3:51.11. The existing American mile record was Jim Ryun's 3:51.1 set in 1967. But rounding rules in effect rounded Scott's time UP to the nearest tenth - meaning he ran 3:51.2 officially even though his time was LIKELY faster than Ryun's time or intrinsically equal to it. Before he ran his Oslo time behind Ovett, the new rounding rules came into effect and it was not clear-cut as to whether Scott held or tied the mile record with his time now recognized as 3:51.11. (Unless someone else has some more on that issue, it was quite a while ago, and soon became a moot point anyway...)Canada Jack 21:30, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I forgot Scott's 3:48.53 set at Oslo June 26 1982 - it broke his 3:49.68 US mile record from 1981, and was the US record Scott surpassed when he ran 3:47.69 11 days later. Canada Jack 14:45, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
