'Station North Arts and Entertainment' district might be a more appropraite title for this neighborhood (or, actually, the far more simple 'Station North'.

Actually, with Jfruh's edits, I like it the way it is now. Although 'Entertainment' is, still, a technical part of the neighborhood's title. Shy 20:35, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've been meaning to write this article for some time -- thanks for supplying a beginning for me to launch off of! I hope that I have retained all the info in the original article, with one exception: the article as written claims that the "majority" of people living in the district lived in one of the three newly converted loft buildings. Station North includes hundreds of rowhouses and several other apartment buildings; while those lofts are an important part of the neighborhoods transformation, I'm reasonably sure that they don't make up an absolute majority of residents. --Jfruh 15:42, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

You're probably right, it was late and I just wanted to get a stub out there so we could get a Station North section rolling. Great job on the edits, btw.

I'm waiting to hear back from my roomate -- he works the courthouses and I think knows exactly how many people live in each of those buildings.

Having driven by a few times this week, I think it would be more accurate to say, "A block of Federal Street, between St. Paul and Guilford" (or something to that effect) would be far more accurate. That said, I wonder if Wikipedia is supposed to be a source for accurate prostitute geolocation? ;)

Well, I'm not familiar with Federal Street; I just know whenever I drive up Guilford after dark, I see those gals working their trade. Plus it worked better with my evocative comparison to the new townhouses popping up across the street ;).

As a Charles Villager who regularly drives northbound on Calvert and Guilford (on my way home, not for prostitutes), I can say that the prostitution is not confined to any one block. They wander around and probably avoid the police. And is it fair to say that drug dealing is a prevalent enough characteristic of the neighborhood to warrant mention? I mean, if this was about Towson, maybe you should include it... but by Baltimore standards, there are hardly any drugs at all. No regular corners

I am working on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Red Link Recovery, and one of the links is Creative Works. Is this a specific building or company? It doesn't seem to really link to Creative works (which redirects to Creative work as a legal term. VikÞor | Talk 23:14, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

-I have lived in this neighborhood for a few years now, and I think a lot of what is written in this article is pretty outdated. I think we should talk about what has changed in the neighborhood since 2005, which is when a lot of this entry seems to have been made. Please feel free to add to what I have listed below (or disagree with it), and we can get this page updated.

-Guilford is no longer "dominated by empty rowhouses", and it can't really be said to be well known for any type of prostitution any more.

-The bulk of the drug activity has also moved east to Barclay and Greenmount.

-The Station North Townhomes were completed in 2007, and they are close to full. Many of them have been sold, and the owners rented out those that they could not sell for asking price once the housing bubble burst.

-There is no mention of Artscape, which is a major event for the neighborhood.

-Amtrak owns Penn Station, and should be mentioned as being an accessible service, along with MARC and local light rail.

-Regarding the tax benefits available in the district mainly being for property owners, that is still true, but it should be mentioned that there are a few tax breaks in place. "What has been less successful, according to Crosse and others in the neighborhood, have been efforts to procure real benefits for low-income families and artists. The plan was to provide affordable housing and work space for artists and residents, but the incentives that are in place do not exactly support that goal. Benefits in arts districts vary from place to place. In Maryland, the State Department of Business and Economic Development designates certain neighborhoods “arts and entertainment districts” and gives them three specific tax breaks. Artists who live and work in the district are offered property-tax credits on qualifying renovations, can apply for an income-tax credit when they make money on their art, and are given a waiver of the admissions and amusement tax charged by the city (benefiting ticket-selling businesses like The Charles Theatre). But these incentives do little for the artists and low-income residents currently in the district, many of whom have trouble qualifying to buy in the first place. For example, SCOPE, a City project created to offload vacant City-owned property, offers dilapidated homes in the area at extremely low prices.
