Route 38 page edit

I have started the route 38 page again. but need some input from Arriva436 & Editor4807.

Gratefully Needed,

Routes edit

I've been thinking about getting photos of buses on the most "notable" section of their routes to illustrate the infoboxes on the articles. At the moment, some just show buses, which could effectively be anywhere. I've included all routes, even if they don't have an article.

  • Route 1: Obviously Cowes Pontoon, although I intend to get a better shot!   Done
  • Route 2: Not sure, perhaps Goshill or Shanklin old Village?
  • Route 3: Same as 2. Ventnor?
  • Route 4: Quite boring, already has a good photo showing surroundings, but perhaps one in York Av with East Cowes in the background would be good. (now needed with Citaro 480)  Done
  • Route 5: Equally as boring, perhaps East Cowes? I thought Osborne House would be a good idea.  Done
  • Route 6: Not sure, perhaps a steep bit in Ventnor? Or climing the hill in Blackgang?
  • Route 7: Various, although the classic image has got to be the one with Freshwater Bay in the background.
  • Route 8: Not sure, although the steep turn from Alverston Road to Forest Road in Winford was certainly exciting when I was on the bus!
  • Route 9: Ideas are Wotton Brige or George Street with Ryde beach in the background.
  • Route 10: Downs in the background.   Done
  • Route 11: Pixley Hill, but seeing as it won't serve it soon (presumably), the new route at Carrisbrooke Caslte might be better. Changed my mind to Totland War Memorial  Done
  • Route 14: Not sure, Tescos?   Done
  • Route 16: No idea. Bembridge or St Helens or Seaview   Done
  • Route 22: Perowne Way.   Done
  • Route 38: No idea.
  • Needles Tour: Done!   Done
  • Medina Tour: East Cowes ferry is best I've got and it's being withdrawn for good. I tried a better shot in East Cowes but the flipping thing didn't turn up!
  • Sandown Bay Tour: The turn on Shanklin Esplanade.
  • Downs Tour: On the downs...
  • Wightbus 16: No idea.

Any other ideas? Arriva436talk/contribs 19:03, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good, i was thinking the same thing yesterday when adding this photo, again of the bus station to route 10's infobox... Most I would agree with.
  • Route 16, possible somewhere in Seaview?
  • Route 38 would probably be most notable perhaps in Carisbrooke High Street, coming down the hill with the pub in the background, or at the stop outside Argos and MFI. I have one for this of the dart in Carisbrooke High St will upload soon Iveco 59-12--Iveco 59-12 (talk) 16:04, 28 April 2011 (UTC)   DoneReply
  • Wightbus' 16 could show a steep incline around St Lawrence.
  • Wightbus' 33 which wasn't mentioned could show the bus just passing under the steam railway bridge near Havenstreet, the reason why double-decks cannot serve the route. Similar to this one on flicr when the route was run under Southern Vectis.
Anyway, theres my ideas... Editor5807speak 10:42, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks for that, I will try and get some of the photos in due course... Arriva436talk/contribs 20:34, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just having a look at the Southern Vectis Blog, some of these locations could be subject to change as routes 10 and 11 go!! and route 8 gets extended to Yaverland and Bembridge... Editor5807speak 18:24, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes that is quite annoying. On the plus side, I have done the Medina Tour with File:Southern Vectis 601 N411 JBV and East Cowes Red Funnel terminal 3.JPG and route 4 with File:Southern Vectis 1149 HW09 BCO and York Avenue 2.JPG.
I probably won't get to the Island in time to get decent shots of the 10 or 11, which is annoying. I was thinking about the 11, while Carrisbrooke Castle was a notable point served, it only served it for a matter of months so isn't that important. Pixley Hill of course I can't get a shot of, so I reckon Totland War Memorial would be best. As for route 8, still the same I think, as I the extension isn't as notable as the "old" bit. Arriva436talk/contribs 13:24, 25 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've just updated the list with some further thoughts I've come up with. In addition, I have a two shots of route 6s at Chale Green which will do for now as a replacement of the bus station one. Arriva436talk/contribs 15:20, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Archive edit

As you may have noticed, I have just archived the first bit of the talk page, to Talk:Southern Vectis/Archive 1. This is because it was getting quite big and I wish to add further things in a minute. As I have used the "cut and paste" method, the new page won't be on your watchlists, so regular editors may want to add it to their list, as archive pages can be open to vandalism. Arriva436talk/contribs 10:59, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have now moved this page to Talk:Southern Vectis/Archive 2008 I am trying to tidy the talk page up again, and I think that having archives by year would be better rather than just bunging it into one bid mess! Arriva436talk/contribs 19:13, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Service changes edit

I have updated most of the things for the services changes on Sunday. I know I started a bit early, but there's lots to do. Anyway, SV themselvs have updated their site to reflect the new routes. Some of the things I have done:

  • Route templates. I have done all but route 7. Route 7 now runs through Freshwater twice (i.e. → Freshwater Bay, Freshwater, Totland, Alum Bay, Totland, Freshwater, Yarmouth → ), and runs up Pixley Hill. It took me long enough to work out how to change the route 11 template, and I can't even comprehend doing route 7!!
  • Route articles. The only ones we have that have big changes are the 7 and 11 (14, 16 and 22 - the others changing don't have articles), and I've not done those yet.
  • Bus routes navbox - Done
  • Bus stations, I have updated Newport's table, redone Ryde to the new style and updated it, and updated the Yarmouth info and added a table.
  • Operators lists. I have now done Southern Vectis' and Wightbus'.
  • Updated transport details on the towns and villages affected.

I think that's it, and to help with further updates, I am about to create this subpage detailing everything that may need to be changed at each service change. Arriva436talk/contribs 21:10, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

This all looks great, its good to see everything so organised to ensure nothing gets missed out! Editor5807speak 22:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just sorted the route 7 template. Think it's OK, but maybe could be better. I've tried to keep all the bits of Freshwater next to each other, but it's a little tricky! --Peeky44 What's on your mind? 14:44, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Good work, it looks great! I had a look at editing it a while ago but it looked far too complicated! Editor5807speak 17:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Excellent thanks! As I said, I managed all the others, but the 7 - no way!! Arriva436talk/contribs 17:29, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

December 2009 service change photos edit

I have started discussions at both Talk:Southern Vectis route 10 and Talk:Southern Vectis route 11 to discuss what areas of the route need photographing before they are withdrawn. If anyone feels anything else should be included please feel free to add it and I will try to include it when I take the photos. I also only realised a few days ago when Southern Vectis announced full details of the changes on their website that both routes 14 and 16 would be going too. Anyway as they don't have their own articles I have listed any photos that may need to be taken below.
route 14

  • Ryde bus station
  • Tesco
  • St Helens, somewhere around the village green
  • Bembridge, along the harbour, and one in the main part of the village.

route 16

  • Ryde bus station
  • Seaview, somewhere in the village centre and somewhere near the sea
  • St Helens, same as the 14, around the village green
  • Bembridge, again same as the 14, along the harbour and somewhere in the main part of the village.

Anyway theres just a few ideas, I only have a few free days set aside for this so I will try to get as much done as I can. Editor5807speak 23:58, 7 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

And on the subject of photos, I've also noticed Citaros 452 and 457 are not photographed, so I will try to get those before they leave if I see them. Editor5807speak 00:15, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Good ideas, I have replied on both the route 11 talk page (I have pretty much managed this myself), and the route 10 page - where I have mentioned the 14 and 16. On the subject of the two Citaros, I managed a shot of 452 on Saturday. It is in the dark, and while it is amazingly sharp considering it was hand held, a daytime shot would be good. I too will be looking out for 457, as that has escaped me! 480 isn't photographed either, but that doesn't matter really as that is staying. I think 479 (could be 480 though) has had the route 9 branding removed - could be worth a shot... (and 480 with it still on).
I was going to upload my SV shots to Commons in order with all my others, but as there's a huge backlog I've got to clear, I think I'm just going to start now! Arriva436talk/contribs 15:12, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok, hopefully I'll see it around. I don't know when the route 9 branding was removed but I was on 480 on Saturday which definitely still had it, so probably 479 that it's been removed from. Editor5807speak 20:58, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Commons image category edit

I've just proposed some changes to the Commons category, to sort it all out. You may wish to have a look at Commons:Category talk:Southern Vectis.

P.S. I've also changed the archive here, see thread above. 2009/10 should follow (probably put those together), and I'll have to move the bit in the 2008 archive which is actually from 2009 into the other one. Arriva436talk/contribs 19:55, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Images I have taken edit

Ok, there's no way I'll have any time tomorrow to get any more photos so I'll just say what I have managed. I'll upload them when I get the chance.

Route 10

  • I have four angles of various buses on Brading Down coming down Bully's Hill into and out of Brading.
  • In Brading I have an image of a bus coming through Brading High Street, close to the Church travelling up the hill bound for Sandown.
  • In Yaverland a bus coming in each direction.
  • In Sandown a bus at the Sandown High Street bus stands and the same bus later at the Victoria Street bus stands. The bus in question was 1101, so the photo also shows that the "Island Thinker" has been removed.
  • A bus at Coppins Bridge Roundabout, uploaded a few days ago...
  • I attempted to get a bus in Staplers but waited for half an hour and the bus never turned up! So no luck there, unfortunately...
  • Images of bus stops showing "10" at Staplers and Brading. There's also one at Yaverland. (All the others were changed to show "8" early, all the Yaverland stops were changed but the one at Wight City must have been forgotten as it still displays 10.

Others

  • Front, interior and rear of bus 457 due to be taken out of service early next week. If they are still in operation then I may be able to get others.
  • Moss Tours normally operate the Ryde Town, Binstead, Haylands circular service. I wasn't sure if this was also being withdrawn on the 20th (it was carrying a decent number of people). The bus used was open-top bus 637.

When I took my 'main' image of the bus on the Downs the display flashed and doesn't show anything. I have attempted getting a bus at the same angle but have been relatively unsuccessful. I have also tried taking the display showing Newport from other images but have never got it looking quite right. Once the photo has been uploaded anyone else feel free if you feel you can do it and re-upload it! Thanks, Editor5807speak 19:17, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fantastic work, well done! That's helpful in getting stuff down for the record. Regarding bus stops, they apparently left the "main" stops, so that's presumably why White City still showed 10. Nice work in getting the stops at Brading and Staplers, the Brading Bull Ring stop had been changed by the time I was there on Saturday. They are now "recycling" stops, and using the old ones with new stickers. They must have been away for quite a while, as surprisingly, at the Bull Ring (where all they needed to do was take route 10 off), another flag seems to have been put up. You could definitely read "to Cowes" and "Gurnard Portland Inn" on it!
Fortunately, Bembridge Crossway had been left (although it was wrong anyway at it hadn't been changed to show the 16 - so they may have well just updated it!). Why they left some stops I'm not quite sure, if you're having the majority wrong then you may as well do them all! The stops along Seaview Seafront had also been left, as the 8 isn't serving there and for obvious reasons they can't just take all the bus stops down when the route is still running. These too were wrong, stating they for for the 16 in the opposite direction to what they actually were! Right, it's may turn to say what I've done now! Arriva436talk/contribs 22:18, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

December 09 updates edit

With all the talk of photographing the routes, updating the pages had completely slipped my mind (and there's a lot that needs doing!) I have used the talk subpage above as a guide but so far I have only got around to updating the main SV article (number of routes operated), List of Southern Vectis bus routes (deleting old routes and adding details of extended routes e.g. route 8) and the Template:Isle of Wight bus routes (moving the 10, 11, 14 and 16 down to the 'former routes' section). So still a lot more to do!!

Also, something I wanted to discuss was the 'service' sections on the 10 and 11 route articles. Should these be kept or deleted? Former routes 12 and 15 don't have them and of course since the route is no longer in operation, then it's no longer a service they operate. Unless of course they should be kept for historical reasons, in which case the section title should probably be changed to something like 'past service'. Editor5807speak 20:09, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Don't forget the list of what needs to be changed: Talk:Southern Vectis/Route changes. I have just updated the articles for each bus station. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:08, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, it's a useful page and it's what I meant by the 'talk sub page above', now I've got a bit of spare time I'll try to work on some more updates. Editor5807speak 22:19, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh sorry, I missed that bit. I have now done the bus stations, and updated all of the route templates that needed doing (all except the 16 actaully). I left the 10 and 11 so they reflect the situation of their latter days. I have also checked/updated where needed up until route 6. I note that route 7 doesn't mention its change to run up Pixley Hill.
As to whether to keep the service section, I'm not sure. They show some important stuff, but not all of it is that important. Maybe they could be replaced with just a summary of first and last bus. In terms of the 11, the table is out of date anyway. Arriva436talk/contribs 15:13, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Images I have taken edit

Right, this could take a while. My trip (detailed on Editor5807's talk page) was succesful, and I got some bonus shots as well! Sadly, it was absoulytly freezing and being outside the whole day wasn't too good. My hands were in pain and my finger numb for a long while! I ended up coming over Southampton way and catching the 10 to Brading (to see the views - last time I did it it was pouring down) and then the 2 to Ryde to commence my plan...

Here is what I achieved.

  • Wilts & Dorset 740 (K740 ODL) in Southampton. Sound familliar?! Off topic, but during the day I saw cars with Kxxx ODL and old UVG Dart Nxxx PDL registrations, very random!
  • Interior of 300. This is the only new to SV one with the seats behind the driver.
  • 1151's new IOW College rear advert.
  • 194's new IOW College rear advert.
  • Both together.
  • Bus stop flags in Newport BS showing the old numbers.
  • 192's new IOW College rear advert.
  • Shots from the inside of the route 10 I caught, at Robin Hill and the view at the Downs. These double up as interior shots. Major dissapointment though that it was MPD 319, trust me to get a single decker!
  • 319 leaving the Bull Ring on the 10.
  • Updated bus stop at Bull Ring.
  • Dart 311 on route 14 on Beaper Shute (out of windscreen of a Scania).
  • Iveco Treelopper passing us at Tesco, probably updating bus stops.
  • Iveco minibus 045 updating bus stops.
  • Dart 309 at Ryde bus station on route 16.
  • The old signs at Ryde bus station.
  • Dart 309 at Tesco on the 14.
  • Dart 311 at Tesco on the 14.
  • Dart 311 at Bembridge Crossway on the 14 (can you spot a theme coming on...)
  • Dart 311 at Bembridhe Crossway after becoming a 16.
  • Bus stops in Bembridge.
  • Dart 309 at Bembridge village on the 16 (annoyingly the driver changed the display to a 14 way too early).
  • Dart 309 at Bembridge village on the 14 (on the return journey, actually a 14).
  • Scania 1102 at Bembridge village on the 10.
  • Some excercise running to Bembridge Habour
  • Dart 319 at Bembridge Habour on the 10.
  • Dart 311 at Bembridge Habour on the 14.
  • Dart 311 at St Helens Station Road on the 16.
  • Bus stops in St Helens (including the shelter that still says "NUMBER ONE" from before April 2006.
  • Dart 309 at St Helens Green on the 16.
  • The old style bus stop sign Editor5807 told me about at the Vine Inn.
  • Dart 309 at St Helens Green on the 14.
  • Dart 319 at St Helens Green on the 10.
  • Scania 1102 at St Helens Green on the 10.
  • Dart 311 in Caws Avenue somewhere between Seaview Heights and Nettlestone, on the 16. I got off there as someone was waiting to get on, so I could take a phot of my bus.
  • Dart 309 in Caws Avenue a bit further down on the 16.
  • Bus stops at Seaview, including notes about the 8's temporary (permanent?) diversion.
  • Dart 309 at Seaview Seafront on the 16.
  • Dart 311 coming up George Street on the 14.
  • Citaro 480 with its new route 4 branding.
  • Ford Ecort car, adverting the Scrap my car thingy.
  • Lucky enough to arrive in Ryde and get shots of men putting all the new signs up.
  • 456's interior.
  • B7TL 190 in Newport, performing the last number 11 to run.
  • Scania 1106 in Newport, performing the last number 10 to run.
  • Various open tops loading for the Christmas lights tour.
  • A quirk of there being too many route 1s at once, gave me a chance to photograph two, side by side, one each showing RH and P&R.
  • Route 1's hour and a quater long diversion [1], with buses in Bellevue Road and Moorgreen Road.
  • The work happening at the Somerton park and ride, inc. the temp stops on the main road and a shot of a bus zooming past without stopping.
  • I found where SV outstation the coaches at Somerton, so 201 and 593 photographed.
  • Buses at Cowes Pontoon.

I think that's it! Sadly the only Citros I saw out on Saturday were 451, 454, 456 and 480. The rest seemed to be deckers, so no shot of 457 for my personal collection! Luckily Editor5807 managed one. However, we will now have some extensive coverage of 309 and 311! I travelled on 311 three times, and took photos of it in 5 (6) different places - all of which had the same driver (bar the last), so just a touch embarrasing! At least he let me on without seeing my ticket on the last trip, my hands were frozen. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:55, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lead image edit

I've "un"-cropped some of File:Southern Vectis 301.JPG, so show the surroundings better. As a result, it's now small in the article's infobox. As much as I like the irony of having a bus on a route SV have abandoned as the first picture, I feel we should have a new, up-to-date image. So what image somewhere in Commons:Category:Southern Vectis is the nicest? Arriva436talk/contribs 23:11, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've taken a close look through, there's a lot there but as far as up to date images I was still unsure. I was thinking maybe a 7 somewhere along the Military Road on the small section it serves? As far as nice images the following are particularly nice:

Anyway those are a few ideas, I'm sure there are other options as well. Editor5807speak 17:41, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

They look to be some of the nicest, and in fact that one of 1115 is my favourite photo I've taken of an SV bus! Having an OmniCity would seem to be inevitable, as SV is renowned for deckers, the Citaros are mostly going anyway and there aren't any gleaming B7TL pics (though I like a lot the one currently being used on the route 7 article).
I also think there has to be a lot of sun in the photo, so I ruled 1444 out. I tried each image in the infobox, but 1115 and 1149 didn't really work in there, as the file isn't cropped around the bus tightly enough (and I'm not ruining the photo just to put in the infobox!)
Therefore, for now, I have changed the new lead image to File:Southern Vectis 1149 HW09 BCO 2.JPG. If anyone disagrees please revert or something, or if a better image is found change it. Maybe I'll have to take a photo especially for the infobox, to what I think would look best. Thanks for the suggestions! Arriva436talk/contribs 13:38, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've just realised that the "elected" photo is actually the route 3 image, but hopefully in the summer I'll have a better photo for route 3 anyway, in Godshill or something. Arriva436talk/contribs 13:45, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've just uploaded File:Southern Vectis 1151 HW09 BCV 4.JPG. Because of File:Southern Vectis 1151 HW09 BCV 3.JPG (which isn't cropped), we can now have a nice, cropped, sunny image in the infobox that shows the bus really well. Just a shame it's on route 1! I think Godshill in the Summer is my aim for the eventual infobox image. Arriva436talk/contribs 16:37, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Recent VOSA registrations edit

Go to http://www.tan.gov.uk/tanen/VOSA_SelfServiceOpBusRegSearch_New.asp . Fill the drop down box as "view all". Select Western Traffic Area. Change the date to 23rd Feb. And press select (the one immediately under the check boxes)...

...and see what turns up...

  • X10 & X11.
  • And the 37 is being used for the third time since the network change.

I don't think there's any point doing anything Wikipedia-wise now, but it's still interesting!

Also, the 8 was re-registered on 24th Feb, and some timing changes to the 7 come up on 19th Feb. Wightbus also come up under 26th Feb for route 20. Take everything with a pinch of salt though, VOSA are notorious for having errors in these online bus route registration details. Arriva436talk/contribs 19:55, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

That is interesting! Although on a message in their forum a few weeks ago they said they still didn't want to use letter suffixes and prefixes[2]. Strange that they will only run Monday to Friday as well. It also says about the 8 being re-registered to run between Newport and Sandown, but I couldn't see a mention of any new service to run around Ryde, Bembridge and Seaview areas. I'm guessing the Moss Tours route running between Ryde and Ryde that is being cancelled is the Haylands and Binstead Shuttle, but was wondering if it was being re-numbered to 37 as it says that route would run from Ryde to Ryde as well. Although it was numbered internally as route 12, it would sit in line with the Carisbrooke Estate bus service if it was numbered 37 I suppose... Editor5807speak 20:39, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think it's only suffixes they don't want to use, i.e. it's simpler to have just the 7, and not 7 and 7a etc. The "X" prefix is usually used on buses as limited stop, which apparently the X10 and X11 are to be. The change to the 8 is actually to cancel it between Newport and "Sandown", but a new one has been registered between Newport and Ryde. As I said, VOSA can be a bit dodgy, the fact the old registration only showed it as going as far as Sandown is probably just a mistake (i.e they forgot to change it).
It's a safe bet it's the H&B shuttle, as Moss Motors is what SV called it. It was only the council who called it the 12, so SV can do what they want with the number. As you say, it's interesting the X10 and X11 are only Mon-Fri. I would guess they will be between school off peak workings? Anyway, no point guessing, we'll find out soon enough! P.S. as an aside, I'm currently uploading a couple of photos from the SV strike on 3rd Sept '09. Arriva436talk/contribs 20:04, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Update edit

Well, I now know what the changes are. Sadly they're obviously not in the public domain yet so I can't just give out all of the details here. I will say though that the hunch about the X10 and X11 being linked to coaches is correct, as is the guess that the Binstead and Haylands shuttle is being amended. I also know about the changes to the standard services across the network. And they're not good! Arriva436talk/contribs 18:58, 28 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Update II edit

OK, the timetables have now been put up on Traveline South East. If you go to http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk/ , then timetable search ("find a timetable") and enter Southern Vectis as the operator, all the services come up. As they're now in the public domain, I can now say the changes.

  • X10 is a single journey, into Newport in the mornings, and back out at pm, on the old route of service 10. It is limited stop, running fast between Brading and Broadlands House.
  • X11 is the same, into Newport am, and back out pm. It runs from Totland/Freshwater, then fast to Newport (not service Calboune or anything). Similar to the old route 11 of course, but obviously not serving Carisbrooke Castle or Sylvan Drive.
  • Both are Mon-Fri services for workers, and will be run by coaches that are between school duties.
  • The Haylands and Binstead shuttle is being changed. It will be run as a normal green bus service, every 40 mins. It will serve Ryde bus station. It was going to be numbered 12 (despite being registered as 37), but apparently it will now run as a 37. Makes our life simpler in article terms anyway!

and now the bad...

  • Some early and late journeys removed from various routes due to poor usage.
  • Route 5 has its frequency tweaked later on in the day to improve reliability.
  • Route 9 back down to every 15 minutes on Sundays.

OK thanks, I've taken a look at the site and is there any reason why the new route 37 isn't labeled as a low floor route? Will this be the new part the Olympians play with the new timetable? Editor5807speak 22:31, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh, just remembered, all the Citaros have now gone to Bluestar, leaving just 479/80. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:33, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bustival II edit

Bustival the second is apparently due to be held on 18 April. It came as a surprise to me as I had no idea that they were doing it again. There is an entrance fee this time though, so they should make a bit of money! The IOW Steam Railway site has a mention... http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/special-events/details/8-bustival-vintage-vehicle-cavalcade.html Arriva436talk/contribs 17:07, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's good to know it's being turned into an annual event! I too assumed it was just being held in 2009 to celebrate their 80th birthday. Let's just hope the weather holds up. Hopefully I will be able to make the event as I couldn't last year. Editor5807speak 14:10, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've just been reading through and I think the fee is only for the steam train. Southern Vectis' blog [3] also describes it as "a free day out for all the family." Editor5807speak 19:07, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's good. I'll be able to walk past the queue again! Arriva436talk/contribs 14:41, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Competition section edit

This is a good section, and very interesting. However, there is one thing I think might need to be adjusted. "In fact Southern Vectis now faces virtually no real competition to its services, as Wightbus, being council run, is restricted to running purely uncompetitive routes." I'm not sure this is the best wording, considering routes 3 and 16 do sort of compete, especially as reading comments on Ventnor Blog after it was announced the 16 was to be withdrawn, many people try and catch the 16 as it has much cheaper fares. Any ideas on what to write instead? Arriva436talk/contribs 16:13, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Interesting, I always assumed that if Wightbus had a competitor on a route it would have to automatically stop running its own, but I don't think this theory has actually been tested. I shall add the word "largely" to my wording, which should do for the time being. Whistler 15:16, 11 August 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Whistler (talkcontribs)
I suppose the reason the Rail Link wasn't withdrawn was because it was always designed as a link to the railway, not for shopping in the town as route 3 never served the railway station in the same way anyway. But all looks good now anyway, shame we'll only have a few more weeks left of the Rail Link anyway... Editor5807speak 19:49, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ooops, I thought I'd replied to this, but obviously hadn't! It's much better now you've changed the word. The general rule with council tendered services is that if someone comes and starts a commercial service, the council tendered service is withdrawn, but Wightbus (as usual) is a funny case! School services edit

I notice the article has recently been changed stating that members of the public can use the school services, but Southern Vectis just discourage them not to through alternative branding etc. If someone more in the know could shed some more light on this it would be greatly appreciated. As far as I was aware (admitedly it was only through a friend, not a published source, Southern Vectis had given the Isle of Wight Council a total cost for providing school services under both a contract closed and open to the public. As the closed contract was much cheaper, that's the one the Isle of Wight Council went along with. Even at the school bus stops now it states that members of the public are not permitted to use the services. Any help on the issue would be great, Editor5807speak 22:44, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

As far as I'm aware, the last I heard MMH said it was a closed school contract, as that was what they could provide to the council for the cheapest, as Editor said. Therefore the public are no longer allowed to use the services. Either way, that whole paragraph is a bit biased, and there is no source to back up the statement about BSOG fuel grants, then it shouldn't really be there. I think the whole article has become slightly biased, I'll have to go through and re-word some bits. If the school bus stops say you can't get on them then surely you can't. Do services registered with the traffic commissioner/claiming BSOG actually have to allow members of the public to board? Where is the proof SV are getting BSOG?
I also have an issue with another section: "As of 2010, the vast majority of school buses are run by Southern Vectis, who register them as bus routes with the traffic commissioner and use their term ticket agreement with the council to collect fees. This means the previous contracts have been taken away from Wightbus, leaving the council's bus and coach fleet largely redundant, along with many of the company's drivers. A knock on effect of this shift is that several Wightbus routes, including the St Lawrence-Shanklin Rail link have been discontinued. The Isle of Wight Council is set to decide the fate of Wightbus at their December meeting."
This is worded particularly badly, and doesn't even mention that it was September that the changes came into place which I'd have though would be good to put in. The first bit makes it sound like SV are running them commercially almost, whereas it is much more closely worked in with the Council and contracts etc. Arriva436talk/contribs 08:59, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have just been through all 117 of SV's services registrations listed on VOSA - and none of the new school services are registered, so they are not public services registered with the traffic commissioner. Arriva436talk/contribs 09:12, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, interesting, if they are not registered with the traffic commissioner then they wont be claiming BSOG for them. But if they are registered and claiming BSOG, then they have to let the public on board to justify the BSOG, which is why it was mentioned. - Whistler 20:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
You are right, the routes from '09 have been cancelled and not re registered, so the public is no longer allowed on board. All this stuff is rather murky, so forgive me for initial errors. Whistler 21:00, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
No problems, as you say it is all rather murky and it's hard to tell what's actually going on. We're lucky that details are even available on the council site, certainly the closed contracts in Surrey are impossible to find out info about. Fortunately, most school transport here is provided by route variations on normal services. It will make it a lot easier to photograph buses on school routes!
I personally think it's shame the public can no longer use the services, as if you live in Porchfield say, you've now lost a bus a day. And the school routes run every day, unlike the 35...!! Still, if it's cheaper the council it has to be done I suppose... Arriva436talk/contribs 21:17, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

The "offending" material is now removed. Unfortunately we edit conflicted, but it wasn't too serious. Sadly I am very busy at the moment, which has seriously reduced the amount of time I can edit. I do still keep an eye out, and have watched you dramatically improve the article Whistler with expanded historical content, and various up-to-date stuff, as well as finding some good sources, so well done for that, it's excellent. Arriva436talk/contribs 21:34, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK thanks for the info everyone, and just to echo what was said above really, the article has improved considerably due to Whistler's work. I think it's an article to be proud of. Editor5807speak 22:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Route articles edit

I have noticed that some new route articles have been created recently, for routes 25, 37 and 38. These routes are really not at all notable. At a push you might be able to source route 37 with previous detail about route 15, 4's withdrawal, and the taxibus service - but really it's only a local service around a housing estate and holds little interest. Similarly, there is nothing really noteworthy about the 38. The most interesting thing about it is that the evening service was recently withdrawn - hardly noteworthy. The article is only one line about the service.

Route 25's article is a bit better, but for such a limited service that has only just started, there is not a lot notable about it at all. Certainly no outside content to source it with. I don't want to do this as I realise people have put work into the articles, but I think there really are not notable. I think we jeopardise the more notable routes by having such bad articles for non-notable routes, I fear someone might come along and AfD all of them. I have left saying this for a few weeks now, but there have been no improvements to the articles.

I have therefore taken the following actions:

(Actually, I've just decided to redirect all of them.)

I hate to do this and revert people's work, but as I have said, none of the routes are notable in my opinion, and risk jeopardising the other articles if left as be. Hopefully others will agree with me, if not, I've only redirected them so it will be easy to get content back. Arriva436talk/contribs 09:33, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Agree. While I think it's a shame to lose the information at least this way it's easy to retrieve if it is ever needed again. I think if they were left in their current state in not too long we could have lost a lot more. Editor5807speak 22:17, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wholesale deletion? edit

All the route articles have apparently been deleted, which I find slightly surprising given the historic information and notability criteria mentioned in one or two of them. I can understand (and fully support) removing pointless pages that exist just because the route number does, but can anyone shed light on why the main route articles have gone too? I note that on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 March 28#Category:Circular bidirectional bus routes it was even mentioned that Route 7 probably was notable, although on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Southern Vectis route 2 there seemed no discussion of what was in the articles, just a general consensus that non-notable things should be deleted and notable things moved into the main article - which in the case of the 7 definitely did not happen based on Southern Vectis as it stands today... Peeky44 What's on your mind? 14:03, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately they were all deleted a while ago, with absolutely no mention to those who created them or contributed to them. They've gone along with articles like Island Breezers and List of Southern Vectis bus routes. It gets a brief mention here, but I haven't been able to find any other discussion on it. None of the information was transferred to other articles. It may be worth talking to those involved in that deletion discussion to find out any more information. Sadly it's situations like this that have resulted in myself and many others becoming far less interested in Wikipedia.. Editor5807speak 01:30, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I agree that there was a lot of valuable content lost here. Have you looked at Wikipedia:UNDELETE? To be honest those pages would have probably gone out of date quickly, considering many of the editors have disappeared, but the pages could certainly be userified with a link from this article. Also it seems Southern Vectis bus fleet has been proposed for deletion now.109.144.169.228 (talk) 03:28, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
