Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya → Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya – That was the official name of the country from 1986 to its dissolution in 2011. • Make moot, redirect the article back to History of Libya under Muammar Gaddafi, the long-standing redirect (edit re-creating article recently). I didn't notice this recreation because the discussion has usually taken place elsewhere, but for background, Gaddafi ruled Libya from 1969-2011, but he renamed the country in 1977. But to be clear, this doesn't mean that there should be separate articles strictly because of the renaming. Let's be very clear, Gaddafi was a dictator in 1976 with total control, and he was still a dictator in 1978 with total control. Nothing actually changed. Of course, changes happened from 1969-2011, but the renaming wasn't some key turning point that split out a separate country. But don't take my opinion for it; scholars / history books generally cover Gaddafi's years don't think of 1977 as a turning point or believe that it was a different nation during this period. It was called just "Libya" both before and after. The real turning point was Gaddafi taking charge in 1969. Anyway, see Francoist Spain as an example where the "real" ruler is far more important than whatever title is slapped on the state. SnowFire (talk) 06:07, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

• Support OR Move to Libyan Arab Jamahiriya per WP:COMMONNAME. The current title was only used for 9 years while Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya was used for almost three decades so it naturally makes sense to use that one. It was also the official name at the time of the jamahiriya's collapse. I'd also support moving to just Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as it was the common name, similar to how the articles of other countries use the common name instead of the official one (United Kingdom instead of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, China instead of People's Republic of China, etc). Obviously, we can't just use the common name of Libya as that's taken by the current state, so to differentiate we should use the other common name for Libya during this historical period i.e Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Libyan Arab Jamahiriya also avoids the whole issue of only using one of the country's official names, though that's just silly irrelevant nitpicking.
