    • I suspect that it was indeed true but I am surprised that the practice was limited to NSW and should not have accounted for the difference in recruitment rates between states --Golden Wattle talk 06:26, 20 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Enlistment rates edit

Really needs to be a subject of a separate article with links to the conscription debates and associated plebiscites, exemption courts when conscription was introduced, ....

However, here is a table which compares rates for key periods drawn from McKernan, Michael (1987). "Chapter 24: War". In Wray Vamplew (ed.) (ed.). Australians: Historical Statistics. Broadway, New South Wales, Australia: Fairfax, Syme & Weldon Associates. pp. page 412. ISBN 0-949288-29-2. {{cite book}}: |editor= has generic name (help); |pages= has extra text (help)

Period NSW Victoria Total incl other states
1914 20,761 14,847 52,561
May 1915 5,654 1,735 10,526
June 1915 5,279 3,381 12,505
July 1915 8,961 21,698 36,575
August 1915 12,991 3,983 25,714
Total 164,030 112,399 416,809
Population as at census 1911 1,646,734 1,315,551 4,455,005

A number of issues raised by the figures - differences between the states are quite significant - recruitment during WW1 was state based. Need to work out how to refer to without original reseearch - ie check what those who have written on WW1 recruitment have said.--Golden Wattle talk 23:56, 20 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
