Translations

edit

I've removed the section Translations as it does not comply with WP:DICT. It could and probably should be readded to the article in the case it is reorganized in the same manner as alternative names in the article William (name) (i.e. just a list of different name variants without having them repeated). --Eleassar my talk 13:51, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Last name

edit

I'm looking for someone with the last name of "/sɑrɑ/ (SAR-ah)". I know their first name, but don't know how their last is spelled, I was hoping to come here looking for possible last name variants, but I can't find anything about /sɑrɑ/ (SAR-ah) as a last name... >_> Tips? 129.107.81.12 (talk) 16:56, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sara spelling section should be removed

edit

Both Sara and Sarah is pronounced /sɑrɑ/ (SAR-ah) in French, Italian and Dutch, and therofore it is wrong to say this has traditionally been pronounced that way in English. This statement doesn't cite references either. The pronunciation simply determined by which country you're in, the spelling has in most cases nothing to do with it. I'll try to remove the section. Help me if I can't. Bunifa88 (talk) 19:07, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photo

edit

I think photos should be added to given names. I think visual representation really spruces up the article. I also believe it's interesting to see what different people with the same name look like. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TrevorBG (talkcontribs) 20:30, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Only if there is a clear relevance. Your recent attempt to add a photo did not assert this, as has been pointed out to you here. Favonian (talk) 20:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

It was also pointed out that I should open it up for discussion. So if you don't have anything new or helpful to add please be on your way. Relevance is subjective and you don't get to decide what is relevant for everyone else. You can't point out that something isn't relevant, you can only share your opinion as to whether something is relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.97.131.50 (talk) 18:53, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

How about a picture that is actually relevant to the whole name. Like a picture of Sarah, wife of Abraham, or something. I think the name is said to have been first borne by her.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 19:53, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lists of names removed

edit

The section "List of people with the given name Sarah or Sara" was split to a separate article. After it was merged back as a section here, I deleted it because the decision at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people with the given name Sarah or Sara was Delete, not Merge back.

The same goes for fictional characters, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of fictional characters named Sarah or Sara.

The central rationale is that for a popular name, (i) a complete list would be enormous, and (ii) if we were to attempt a selective list, there is no basis for consensus on who should be included.

If anyone disagrees with these decisions, please lodge an appeal at WP:DRV rather than reinstating those sections here. - Fayenatic (talk) 15:37, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the discussion was a pretty even split. DRV isn't the place for this and such a discussion would not be needed anyway in order to restore blanked material. --Tothwolf (talk) 18:09, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
On further checking, you have a point about the later AFD, for the list of real people, split 5:4; but the earlier one, on fictional characters, had a 9:2 split for deletion against merger, on the same grounds. Also, it seems to me that the people who voted for merger did not counter the arguments for deletion on policy grounds.
I used to argue for a short selective list, specifically this version of Sarah (given name), but I thoroughly lost the argument at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anthroponymy/Archive 6#Again with the popularity contests.... - Fayenatic (talk) 20:35, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Irish Names

edit

I've removed the list of Irish equivalents to the name - none are in any connected to the name Sarah. Saoirse simply means freedom, Ciara and Sorrcha are both much older names with no connection to Sarah (except that Sorrcha is sometimes - erroneously - anglicised as Sarah). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.234.37.64 (talk) 10:02, 4 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Name origin

edit

The name origin is more of Middle eastern, than related to a certain religion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.236.48.194 (talk) 12:04, 15 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

>>>Duplication?

edit

The Translations section lists both "Iranian: سارا" and "Persian: سارا". Is this a mistake? I feel sure that it is. Would somebody care to delete whichever one uses the less customary name for that language — or perhaps replace both with "Farsi: سارا"? Kelisi (talk) 16:40, 8 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Japanese name “Sara” and it’s origin

edit

Japanese name “SARA” is listed here as one of variants but the name has existed since Heian period and has no connection to the Western/Middle Eastern counterparts. It refers to a type of Camellia in Japanese and was used as female names. Hence, that should be noted instead of just listing as a variant as it might confuse readers to think they are related. 2400:2411:9241:9900:3C63:AA09:C14:E4A9 (talk) 14:42, 8 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
