Request for more info edit

I request more information on why an acid scale uses small numbers for high acid. pH of 1 is very acid, pH of 14 is alkaline. As I always use pH to talk about acid this numbering always feels backwards. Why is it that way?

Honors edit

A google doodle should not be considered an honor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.98.195.50 (talk) 19:18, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

To me a 'google doodle' is definitely an honor. It is often used to inform the world about people who have done great things to improve science. Jof (talk) 20:09, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

more details edit

I wished to do some further research to flesh out Doctor Sorenson's page.

The following information was retrieved from the URL http://www.euchems.org/Distinguished/20thCentury/sorensen.asp

He received his Ph.D in 1899 from the University of Copenhagen. He became director of Carlsberg laboratories in 1901 and retired from that position in 1938. At Carlsberg Laboratories he studied amino acids, proteins, and enzymes. Since the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution dramatically effects the rate of enyme activity in that solution, he devised a method of expressing solvated hydrogen ion concentration in a compact and easily express form - a negative logarithmic scale, base ten (10).

The following information was retrieved from the URL http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/electrochem/sorenson.html

His concept of pH was introduced in 1909. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Copenhagen (no date given). He was "director of the chemical department of the Carlsberg Laboratories" (no dates given for either assignment to, or resignation from, said position). He studied how ion concentration effects protein analysis (which species of ion is not specified). He "became a leader in the application of thermodynamics to proteins chemistry" His wife was named Margrethe Høyrup Sørensen. She also assisted him in his work, but whether she did so in a professional capacity is not stated. No method of expressing the ion concentration of a solution was widely used/accepted until Doctor Sorenson introduced the method/concept of pH.

Just wanted to post this info on the talk page before editing the article to include this information. All comments and feedback would be much appreciated.

  • Mild oppose, generally WP uses spaces between the initials, though there is no hard and fast rule one way or the other: see here. Is there a particular reason the spaces should be omitted in this case? Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:51, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. It is normal practice on Wikipedia to put spacing between initials. Whether to do so or not in writing is a personal stylistic choice, but it's better to have consistency here. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:16, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
