Best Known?

I totally get that until recently he's been best known for P&P...but he had a significant part in Homeland this season, and is definitely best known to the general public these days as Quinn, no? Birthday

It seems like Rupert Friend's birthday is either October 1 or October 9, since his Instagram post is dated October 9 [1] and Homeland's Twitter account gave him a bday shoutout on October 9 [2]; but the British Independent Film Awards says his birthday is October 1 [3], as does the Emmys [4] (but they might be basing that information off of IMDB though [5]). Place of birth?

Some confusion about place of birth. Originally, it said 'born and brought up in Stonesfield, Oxfordshire'. On 13 August 2019, this was changed to 'born in Cambridge and brought up in Stonesfield.' (this edit), but as far as I can see without adding a reference confirming this. wikidata still has Oxfordshire as p.o.b. Change to 'brought up in Oxfordshire' and skip p.o.b. altogether? Occasional?

Hello User:Jack Sebastian. Looks like we have a different interpretation of the word 'occasional', as in 'RF is an actor and occasional screenwriter etc.'. I don't think 'occasional' downplays or marginalises someone's accomplishments. It only indicates that these specific accomplishments are not their main line of work/the work they are best known for. I checked the dictionary to be sure, and that appears to be an accepted use of the word. There are quite some occasional painters, essayists, conductors, actors etc. around here on Wikipedia. In this article , I think it provides useful information for the reader. Friend is mainly known as an actor, but has also 'occasionally' ventured into other creative areas. User:Nl maclean, I think the distinction is evaluative. We don't get to make those evaluative distinctions as editors, since we are not citable as sources. I get your interpretation of the word 'occasional' is not intended to be interpreted as such, but I am pointing out that it most certainly will be interpreted as such. If I can do so, others can as well. A person who occasionally does something is perceived as not being serious about it. Like, I drink coffee, but I am an occasional tea drinker. The statement suggests I prefer coffee to tea (I do not) and see the drinking of tea as a secondary choice - an evaluative statement.

I am not sure we are going to find a middle ground on this, but I am willing to agree to widen the loop on this conversation to include the thoughts and suggestions of others, either through 3O or RfC. Let me know how you would like to proceed. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 11:38, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

@Jack Sebastian. My take is that most people will assume that - when it comes to the balance between acting versus 'occasional' directing, dancing versus 'occasional' choreography, playing in an orchestra versus 'occasional' conducting etc. - opportunity is probably a more crucial factor than commitment or talent.

Getting back to the text: what about: "Rupert William Anthony Friend (born 9 October 1981) is a British actor; he also works as a screenwriter, director and lyricist. I maintain that it is useful that Wikipedia gives the reader insight into which elements - quantatively - are most important in the subject's working life. Nl maclean (talk) 12:30, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

@Nl macleanI think that we are in fact listing the elements of the subject's working life, by doing so in quantitative order. Take, for example, Stephen Fry, whose accomplishments are equal to any 3-4 people; there is no hint of quantification or qualification.
