Proposal review 26-JAN-2019

He received the Carnegie Corporation’s Academic Leadership Award in 2015
  Declined.[note 1]

The Board of Trustees has voted to extend Daniels’ appointment for an additional five years, through June 2024.
  Declined.[note 2]

Daniels has focused his leadership on several key areas: strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration in research and education, enhancing student access, deepening engagement with the city of Baltimore and supporting economic and social innovation. These priorities are embedded in the Ten by Twenty, the university’s first comprehensive strategic planning effort and were reflected in the $6 billion Rising to the Challenge campaign, which concluded in October 2018.
  Declined.[note 3]

His commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration has produced a series of transformative initiatives that seek to address some of society’s greatest challenges, from realizing the promise of precision medicine to responding to the needs of urban centers.
  Declined.[note 4]

Daniels also led the creation of several other ambitious, multidisciplinary initiatives, spanning divisions and institutions, including the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute, which aims to strengthen civic engagement and encourage robust dialogue among all citizens; the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs; the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare; the William H. Miller Department of Philosophy; the SNF Parkway Theatre; and the Bloomberg American Health Initiative.
 Clarification needed.[note 5]

Reflecting his commitment to reducing barriers to participation in higher education for high achieving students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, Daniels committed the university at his inauguration to expanding access and enhancing its financial aid program in order to become need blind. In November 2018, the university was able to achieve this long-held goal, thanks to a record $1.8 billion gift from Michael Bloomberg, allowing Johns Hopkins University to become permanently need-blind and to eliminate student loans from financial aid packages for all current and future undergraduates.
  Declined.[note 6]

Daniels also has strengthened the quality of graduate education at Johns Hopkins, ushering in a series of reforms to PhD education including the creation of a PhD innovation fund, systematic collection and public dissemination of data on PhD program performance, and the creation of the first universitywide board charged with evaluating and supporting PhD education.
 Clarification needed.[note 7]

Daniels has been widely recognized for strengthening Johns Hopkins' ties to Baltimore. He has ushered in multiple initiatives in support of the city and its residents, including investment in an 88-acre revitalization plan near Johns Hopkins campus in East Baltimore; construction and operation of the Henderson-Hopkins School as the first new school built in East Baltimore in more than 20 years; the Homewood Community Partners Initiative, a $10 million commitment that has leveraged more than $200 million in investments from others to strengthen the physical, social, and economic well-being of 10 neighborhoods around the Homewood campus; and HopkinsLocal, a major economic inclusion effort to expand business and workforce opportunities in Baltimore. Under this latter program, more than 300 citizens from the most distressed neighborhoods in the city have been recruited into entry-level jobs, and Johns Hopkins has continued to be a national leader in the hiring of ex-offenders.
 Clarification needed.[note 8]

Throughout his tenure, Daniels has championed a universitywide vision for innovation, bolstering efforts to unleash entrepreneurial instincts, translate discoveries into novel technologies, and foster enterprises that are developed, remain, and grow in Baltimore. The university’s ecosystem now facilitates start-up activity through four innovation hubs offering more than 37,000 square feet of incubation space near its main Baltimore campuses—including a dedicated student facility and makerspace, a Social Innovation Lab supporting mission-driven organizations with disruptive technologies from Johns Hopkins and across Baltimore, and a suite of supports for faculty inventions and affiliated companies.
  Declined.[note 9]

A law and economics scholar, Daniels is the author or co-author of seven books and dozens of scholarly articles on the intersections of law, economics, development, and public policy in areas such as corporate and securities law, social and economic regulation, and the role of law and legal institutions in promoting third-world development.
  Declined.[note 10]

  •   Not done Lmcuster - a few minor things that will need to be amended (though I think this is getting closer):
  • All of your suggestions are in extreme violation of WP:EXT which proscribes the use of external links within the body of the article (the external links in the Selected Works section are fine, though).
  • This phrase - "Reflecting his commitment to reducing barriers to participation in ..." - is basically sell text that might be fine for a press release or a brochure rack, but is not appropriate for an encyclopedia entry. Further, after reading the source used to support this (the New York Times) it doesn't appear to confirm that Daniels has a "commitment to reducing barriers". Therefore, to simply declare - without any source - that Daniels has a "commitment to reducing barriers" runs afoul either of our policy against original research (if it is based on your own study of Daniels' personality or your observations of him) or our neutral point of view policy (if it originates from a directive by Daniels about the manner or mechanism in which his staff should celebrate him).

POV discussion on Hopkins Police bill

edit

The section on the private police was blanked with a complaint about WP:NPOV not being followed. I just restored the content as the complete deletion of the section and its references did not seem warranted. As the adding editor of most of that section, I am eager to discuss what issues were seen and how (if needed) we can bring it in line with policy. I will say that I do not consider Mr. Daniels' proposal of & prominent advocacy for the bill, nor the criticism of said bill to be irrelevant or POV per se. If there are other sources to bring to bear that will give a fuller picture, let's please discuss them here and integrate them into the article. Sauzer (talk) 15:52, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sauzer-- I removed the section that you wrote on this topic in an effort to address the below note on the page from October 2020. I think your section is very clearly written in a way that is not appropriate for a biography. Seems like a blatant violation of Wikipedia's rule about living persons. --Pandemicbaby (talk) 18:04, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

This article reads like a press release or a news article and is largely based on routine coverage or sensationalism. Please expand this article with properly sourced content to meet Wikipedia's quality standards, event notability guideline, or encyclopedic content policy. (October 2020) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pandemicbaby (talkcontribs) 17:54, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pandemicbaby, thanks for clarifying your concern. I think it's entirely possible for wording to convey a tone that escapes me as the copy writer, and to the extent that that is the case, we should work to address it. In discussing the bill and its criticism, what passages do you think are written inappropriately? Having re-read it myself a couple times since this morning, the only thing I can quibble with is the passage "the proposal also met with opposition from activists and community leaders" which is arguably a case of weasel words. Digging into the relevant article a little bit more, I think it would be fair to say community associations were divided in their support (Tuscany-Canterbury & Guilford groups supporting, those of Abell, Harwood & Greater Remington opposing), so I would propose revising the sentence to a more specific "However, support among neighborhood associations was divided, and the bill received criticism from activists including" and then continuing on into the copy as written. I'll wait for further discussion and hopefully consensus before making any further edits though. A last note for now - I don't believe the passage is unduly balanced for or against the bill merely because it discusses the criticism and protests of it. It is definitely the case that biographies of living persons are held to high scrutiny, which includes credible citations for any claims. I think that Mr. Daniels' support for the Hopkins police bill is relevant to his tenure at JHU, and every sentence of the section is cited to credible reporting (Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Brew, Washington Post), which is a primary requirement of a BLP. Sauzer (talk) 18:43, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sauzer -- The edit you describe and all that sounds reasonable to me per the Wiki rules. Thanks for addressing my suggestion. --Pandemicbaby (talk) 14:11, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
