Episodes of the Original Show

edit

In the top it says he completed thirteen episodes while in the time line it says he died after the first one. Which is correct?

Also, his year of birth seems to be unclear.
[1] says 1893
[2] says 1890
His gravestone [3] says 1890, while the article [4] around the gravestone says 1893.
Another biography [5] says 1890.

Rather confusing. -- Túrelio (talk) 21:25, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

It appears there may be a Hollywood movie coming out "Ripley's Believe it or Not" and the man who will play Mr Ripley?.......JIM CAREY! Carey's Wiki article list this as an upcoming movie. It is listed on IMBD as having a 2011 release date. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492445/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.31.242.174 (talk) 02:11, 28 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Marriage to Beatrice Roberts

edit

It says that Ripley married Beatrice Roberts in 1919. That would mean that she (Beatrice Roberts) was only 14 when they married!!! Not to mention that he was also 12 years older than her when they married(assuming he was born in 1893, but if he was born in 1890, he would be 15 years older than her) Another article says that Mr. Ripley never talked about the marriage. Most likely because even then it was considered innapproprate and he didn't want to spoil his image. I used to think he was a good person until I found out about that. I also found out from another site that before and after his 3 month marriage to Beatrice Roberts that he had as many as 5 live in girlfriends (one wonders if he was cheating on his wife). Believe it or Not! SuzieSingB (talk) 22:09, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

07/20/2017 On a recent visit to Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium in Gatlinburg, Tennessee I saw several photos of Robert Ripley with Chinese girlfriends. The museum contained many references to his affinity for the Far East and it's women. So as far as live-in girlfriends go it is likely to be true. The museum did not mention his marriage to Beatrice Roberts that I saw. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FCC8:AF04:C200:851A:312:7B52:A01E (talk) 15:52, 20 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Beatrice Roberts Was a very young woman when she got married no one ever actually gave her the “kiss” of life DokiDokiLover (talk) 15:13, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Original Research Concerns

edit

The biography site called NNDB also has Mr. Ripley's biography. If you look at the bibliography of that page it says that the original research came from Wikipedia. In his biography on Wikipedia, it says that some research came from NNDB. What is going on here? SuzieSingB (talk) 13:26, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mr. Pearlroth

edit

In my opinion, it was very unfair of Mr. Ripley to take credit for all the Believe it or Not! facts when it was really Mr. Pearlroth doing all the work. I read Mr. Pearlroth's page and found 2 disturbing facts: 1) Pearlroth appearently had very little time off. 2) Mr. Pearlroth's page on Wikipedia is not very popular in terms of searching for information about him. On NNDB, there isn't even information about him! I think that he is rather important because, If it wasn't for him Ripley would have gone NOWHERE. The least Ripley could have done is to call it Ripley and Pearlroth's Believe it or Not! Pearlroth should have quit when he had the chance. He was qualified to become an attorney instead of tolerating Ripley! He would have probably been paid better as an attorney and had more time off. Unless things have changed since I last saw his page on Wikipedia, Pearlroth doesn't even have a lead photo and probably never will! To think I used to like Mr. Ripley. How dissapointing. P.S. Ripley deserved to die from a heart attack. I think he was a terrible person.

Look at all of those necessary citations!

edit

There are 5 necessary citations for that page!!!! Can you believe it (or not:-)) !!! Someone really needs to clean that page up!!!! Concerning that trivia section, who on earth came up with that !?! That page is a mess!!!! SuzieSingB (talk) 14:05, 3 August 2010 (UTC) I think this is a very good page to learn about amazing facts , if you dont know about Robert Ripley, He always wanted to explore the world for new information.Reply

Original Name

edit

I think it should be noted that Robert Ripley was born LeRoy Ripley, but changed his name to Robert. Just a suggestion SuzieSingB (talk) 16:32, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is there a reliable a source for this? -- œ 09:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
There is now. 98.248.92.220 (talk) 05:51, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

His original name wasn’t Robert Ripley it was LeRoy “Roy” Robert Ripley! He did not change his name he was called by his middle name because his boss didn’t like LeRoy! DokiDokiLover (talk) 15:15, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Death?

edit

In this entry, it says that Ripley died of cancer (side box) and of a heart attack (in the chronology). I couldn't be both. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.173.164.178 (talk) 18:39, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

He did not die of this cancer you say of it was just a heart attack DokiDokiLover (talk) 15:18, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

High Mount

edit

In the article, it says he purchased a third home in High Mount, Florida in 1947. There is no such place as High Mount. Might be Mount Dora, that's the closest thing I've ever heard of. I'm 99.9% sure that High Mount doesn't exist. No citation on where that name came from, does anyone know? Jimindc (talk) 06:50, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

"The Comic Strip" header

edit

I placed this header because originally under "Death" there was a subhead called "Mysteries" but the content makes no reference to any mystery surrounding Ripley's death or any other mysteries and instead simply talks about how the comic was put together. If anyone has a better header, or feels the material is better suited in another part of the article (or merged with the Ripley's Believe it or Not article), feel free. I just felt the original "mysteries" header made no sense. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 17:24, 24 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Before "Believe It Or Not"

edit

As the article is currently written, it would seem that Ripley popped up out of nowhere in 1919 for his wedding. Shouldn't there be some mention of what happened in the first three decades of his life?

Ripley was an established newspaper cartoonist and writer by 1919. Searching Chronicling America for "by Robert L. Ripley" reveals his illustrated column (drawings AND text) as early as 1914. It reveals that he was published in the Washington Evening Star, the GrandForks Daily Herald, the Washington Times, the Albuquerque Evening Herald, all prior to 1919. In 1919 his work also appeared in the Seattle Star and the Chattanooga News. So it is very likely that his column was syndicated, well before he was hired by the New York papers.

Here's the search URL. Check out his earlier work. Much of it is very similar in style to the BION feature. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/results/?date1=1836&sort=date&date2=1922&searchType=advanced&language=&proxdistance=5&rows=20&ortext=&proxtext=&phrasetext=by+robert+L.+ripley&andtext=&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=2 DiffuseGoose (talk) 00:55, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

An earlier, non-illustrated, article in 1912: "Frenchman wants all fights controlled by one organization" http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88084272/1912-09-05/ed-1/seq-7

And another in 1913: "Baseball played at the base of pyramids" http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88084272/1913-06-03/ed-1/seq-7

So Ripley may have been a sportswriter before he was an illustrator. Both those articles are in an El Paso newspaper but with a New York byline.DiffuseGoose (talk) 11:25, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
