Notable patients

I removed the text regarding the finding of rifampicin in Slobodan Milošević's bloodstream, because it is completely irrelevant to this article. It could, conceivably, be useful information for the Slobodan Milošević article but not this one. -Techelf 07:53, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the Milosevic anecdote should be added to the paragraph concerning drug interactions (it's currently being reported that he used rifampicin specifically to counteract his HTN medications.[1]) It should be a small line quickly giving the premise and linking to the specific portion of the Milosevic wiki once the changes on that page are more or less finalized. A brief real-life correlation would be a nice breath of fresh air for some of these drug articles.--Jim 13:37, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please would someone rewrite the last sentence of the section "Pharmacokinetics" ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkman101 (talkcontribs) 02:27, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rifmapin as an inducer

edit

Rifampin is well known inducer of CYP3A4 as well as CYP2C9 in vivo. (CYP2D6 in not considered an inducible enzyme) 146.79.254.10 (talk) 17:59, 3 August 2011 (UTC)AWReply

Current source reference incorrectly lists induction of CYP2D6 but provides no further valid citation. As mentioned above, CYP2D6 is not considered inducible, and I am removing CYP2D6 from main article. Mrbippers (talk) 00:23, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pseudomonas is not inherently resistant to rifampin?

edit

The article states without citation that pseudomonas is inherently resistant to rifampin. While pseudomonas can develop resistance to rifampin, I cannot find a reference for the idea that it is inherently resistant -- in fact, I actually ended up on this page because I have been reading articles detailing surprisingly good outcomes in pseudomonas aeruginosa induced osteomyelitis obtained by adding rifampin to other antibiotics. I'll eliminate / edit the relevant lines if I don't hear back from anyone here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.16.226.233 (talk) 17:25, 4 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Drugs with rifampicin were introduced in 1968 - not in 1971! see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6635432 an various other sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.228.152.68 (talk) 09:28, 2 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rifampicin increases metabolic clearance of Cortisol (a steroid hormone) which can be life threatening.

edit

This may sound somewhat trivial but it can lead to an Addisonian Crisis in those with Addison's Disease which is life threatening. I would like to suggest that the steroid hormone Cortisol be specifically mentioned in the article wherever may be appropriate (I see mention of increased metabolic clearance of medications but not hormones) as it may help save lives. Perhaps include mention under adverse effects?

See below for my personal experience.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2209230

We conclude that the increase of metabolism of cortisol after simultaneous taking of rifampicin may induce adrenal
                         crisis in Addison's disease.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/471734

This enzyme induction results in a need to increase the dose of hydrocortisone substitution therapy in patients with
                        Addison's disease treated with rifampicin.

https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/kekkaku1923/61/2/61_2_71/_article

The maximum plasma concentration of cortisol (hydrocortisone) in group (hydrocortisone+RFP) was as low as 40% of
that in control patients (group hydrocortisone).

Personal experience - It sent me, a well controlled Addison's patient, to the ER where I received an emergency shot of Cortef (Cortisol) and it was discovered that my blood cortisol level was dangerously low.

My pharmacist, at a national retailer, was unaware of this action as were his coworkers, and their computerized system made no mention of a Rifampicin/Cortisol interaction. Lets help spread the info! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:3610:850:A08A:2A6A:16CB:674 (talk) 03:18, 4 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rifampicin in made by the soil bacterium Amycolatopsis rifamycinica - The bacterium makes rifamycin, which is synthetically converted to rifampicin. 64.26.99.248 (talk) 21:52, 22 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
