Can Not Understand Basis For Balbin's Close Friendship With Peron after Peron's Return To Argentina

Ricardo Balbin is usually portrayed as a principled fighter for human rights and democracy in Argentina. He was even imprisoned by Peron during Peron's first period as President. Thus, I am baffled as to how Balbin came to be considered a close friend and even confident of Peron after Peron's return to Argentina in the 1970's. Balbin certainly knew how Peron was a demagogue and manipulator who made contradictory promises to groups with radically differening ideologies. Peron's apparent acquiesence in the murder of on-and-off supporters like trade union leader Augusto Vandor shows a streak of outright criminality in Peron's personality. I can understand how, given the situation in Argentina in the early 1970's that Balbin and the Radical Civic Union may have come to feel that the only possibility for a return to civilian rule would be for the Radicals to acqueisce to the return of the Peronists to power, but it is a long way from this to having Balbin become a "close personal friend" of Peron. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.166.202.245 (talk) 09:35, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
