Talk:Pressure-sensitive tape

Title edit

The correct title for this is "pressure sensitive tape". The association which manufactures it is PSTC, ASTM standards call it this. Rlsheehan (talk) 01:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but the PSTC is a US-specific body. The American Standards institute is, er, US, too. Miriam Webster (US) calls it "adhesive tape". The OED & Chamber's dictionary used in the UK & UN also calls it "adhesive tape". Ephebi (talk) 13:51, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, PSTC is mostly USA and Canada. ASTM International is an international organization with worldwide membership. There are several types of "adhesive tapes", some of them being pressure sensitive tape. Gummed tapes and heat activated tapes are also "adhesive tapes" but not pressure sensitive tape. The first PSA edit

"PSA tape was invented in 1926 by Richard Drew of 3M.[citation needed] The original tape was a paper-backed masking tape. Transparent and other tapes grew from this invention."

I might be mistaken, but I thought friction tape had been used for electrical purposes since well before then. A bit of reading seems to confirm this, but I cant find anything solid anough to quote. 86.4.152.167 (talk) 11:10, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please no brands edit

It is best to keep articles free of advertising. Keep brand names and trademarks out. If we allow a few names in such as Scotch brand tape or Sellotape brand, then we would need to list all brands of tapes. We cannot give preference to just a few. Keep Wikipedia free of listing brands; this is not a shopping aid. Pkgx (talk) 19:08, 24 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hiya Pkgx I might agree with that sentiment were it not for the fact, as it is, both names are mentioned in the article, and indeed have their own wiki articles. If I count up the years that I have worked in an office environment I run out of fingers and toes and yet I have never ever heard the term "transparent office tape" used, not even once. Sellotape, most definitely, and Scotch tape (presumably), are the genericised common names for this product. Stacie Croquet (talk) 20:34, 24 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
You seem to want Sellotape in the office tape section. But Sellotape is also a masking tape, box sealing tape, double coated tape, etc. Similarly with 3M's Scotch brands, there are many constructions of tape with a Scotch brand. The best solution is to leave brands and trademarks separate from the discussion of the products. Pkgx (talk) 21:44, 24 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
The common name for office tape is Sellotape, just as the common name for a vacuum cleaner is a hoover. Just because Hoover also made washing machines, it does not invalidate that a hoover is known as a hoover. Likewise in the UK we call sellotape, sellotape. Stacie Croquet (talk)

Lasso tape edit

Around 1962 I came across the term "Lasso tape" for rolls of PVC adhesive tape, around 19 mm (3/4 inch) wide in various colors, used by electricians to wrap bluepoint connectors. The adhesive remained sticky so the connector could be readily accessed by unwinding the tape. Someone mentioned it was named for an inventor or manufacturer named Lassovic or similar. Anyone have better info? Doug butler (talk) 22:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
