Top rating for Project Hudson Valley?

edit

No way the Thruway gets mid-level rating for importance and Poughkeepsie gets "Top" rating. Top is usually used on articles of the most importance and doing with the topic as a whole, example would be in this category perhaps "Hudson River" and "Hudson River Valley". Unless someone disagrees I'll be notching it down to high.Camelbinky (talk) 06:54, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can see why that rating was made. That is not a reflection on this article, which is pretty mediocre, but simply on the importance of Poughkeepsie in the Hudson Valley. I have no particular feelings of "top" vs. "high" but off-hand I can't think of a subject more consequential to the Hudson Valley than this city. This is the first I'm finding out that there is a Hudson Valley Project, by the way. Good to know.
As for NY State Thruway, I would also agree with the importance rating, and I have not even seen the article. JohnnyB256 (talk) 14:28, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notable natives and residents

edit

While she may be notable to some, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is neither a native nor resident of Poughkeepsie. If this category is going to be used for such "Notable People Who Live Near Here," then let's at least get the information accurate. She is not from Highland, which is directly across the Hudson River from and technically adjacent to Poughkeepsie; she is from Marlboro, which is eight miles (two towns) south of Highland. This from a friend whose son was in daycare with her. I am told she was annoying even way back then.Mfwills (talk) 17:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Origin of the name "Poughkeepsie"

edit

I've removed the assertion that "U-puku-ipi-sing" is an Iroquois word-- it is not just unattested, it's impossible: No Iroquois language has p's or even b's. The main text still asserts "a Native American word (roughly U-puku-ipi-sing)". In what language? And "roughly"? Sean M. Burke (talk) 14:56, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Occupy encampment under history section?

edit

I am neither here nor there on the occupy movement, it's a free country, but I don't know about an occupy movement being listed under the history section. I'm sure this has come up before. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Corychristopherson (talkcontribs) 15:27, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Educational institutions

edit

Most of this section deals with schools not actually in the city, with no references suggesting that any city residents even attend. Unless there's a good reason for that, I suggest removing those sentences and focusing on building information on the public schools which actually are there, and have a long history of problems.--~TPW 18:44, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area

edit

According to a 2018 Bulletin, the OMB has redefined Dutchess and Orange Counties as the "Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area". Someone needs to make a page for this revived MSA, as well as update the relevant pages such as this one. I myself don't have the time to look up all the numbers to do that properly.Inkan1969 (talk) 15:47, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Media/Entertainment mention

edit

Is it worth mentioning that the Town was mentioned in a rather important way in the TV Series Supernatural? 2A02:A310:E23B:D880:CD57:2EF1:7BD0:E3EB (talk) 16:28, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Geography and climate

edit

"Extremes range from -30 F (-34 C) on January 21, 1961." Not likely given that's not only colder than almost all other northeast cities record lows ever let alone that date. And other nearby cities in farther upstate New York didn't even have their coldest temperature of 1961 on that date, in fact the lowest temperature that year for other, colder cities on that date was February 2, 1961, and were at least a decade, order of magnitude, more than 10 F warmer on that date.
