Talk:Places of Worship Registration Act 1855

Established church? edit

The lead currently says: It applies only in England and Wales, and does not cover the Established Churches of those countries (the Church of England and Church in Wales respectively): they are exempt from its requirements. The Act itself is given as the reference.

Two problems with this:

  1. The Church in Wales was disestablished in 1920 by the Welsh Church Act 1914. There is no Established Church within Wales.
  2. Section 10 of the Act only refers to the CofE, not the Church in Wales. The Act says that it doesn't affect the CofE, but the CinW does not appear to be mentioned by a later amendment.

A quick search online seems to show that everyone agrees that CinW churches don't have to register but I can't see the basis for this. Am I missing something? Thoughts? BencherliteTalk 11:47, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I must admit I didn't realise the Church in Wales didn't have Established status – d'oh! I'll fix the loose wording in the lead accordingly. On point 2, I would imagine that it is because the Church in Wales is still part of the Anglican Communion, but as you say it is not made explicit as far as I can see. Better do some more investigation into that. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:19, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
An education-swapping experience for both of us, then - I'd never heard of this Act until I spotted it appearing in one of your edit summaries as you updated your DYK stats! BencherliteTalk 13:38, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just a note on the original Worship Registration certificates edit

See Template:WorshipReg for a template which can be used in Wikipedia to record details of places of worship registered under this Act. The original certificates are held in series RG70 at The National Archives, Kew, where they can be inspected readily. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:18, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

WP:BACKWARDSCOPY note edit

Historic England's 2018 report A Survey of Hindu Buildings in England quotes the "Overview" paragraph of this article almost in its entirety, but it is correctly attributed and so is "compliant" as per WP:BACKWARDSCOPY. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 16:03, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
