"Breast cancer awareness month"

What is up with the trademarked pink ribbon international logo??

Seeing as this article is about the generic pink ribbon for awareness of breast cancer - the plain pink ribbon image should be displayed as it was before. Turning this page into an ad for a commercial company that "focuses itself on intellectual property holding, licencing and administration for and on behalf of the Group as well as for third parties" is very poor taste.

Teardrop Pink Ribbon

I pulled this text:

The Breast Cancer Action Ottawa ribbon has a unique meaning. The image, being the teardrop shape, represents the tears shed at the time of diagnosis, the pink represents the women who are living with the disease, and the black is in honour of those who have died. The Challenge is to end the deaths so that we can remove the black lining and wear the pink ribbon in celebration.

About the tear drop pink ribbon

firstly on the grounds that it's word-for-word off their copyrighted website, and secondly on the grounds that the marketing campaign for a local group is not sufficiently notable to merit inclusion in an encyclopedia entry on the broader topic. If you want to restore it, I suggest first re-writing it to meet Wiki guidelines and then putting it on a page about Breast Cancer Action Ottawa in a subsection titled -- Marketing Themes --. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, v2

I propose that all of the stuff about Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is NOT specifically related to pink ribbons be moved to the BCAM page. I think this change will greatly improve both articles. Any comments or objections? WhatamIdoing 18:54, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Sexism

Under the criticisms section, no mention is made of the whole "Pink is for girls" thing and Breast cancer predominantly affecting women - has no one ever objected to this as sexist and a little infantile ? - 124.191.144.183 (talk) 10:39, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

What specific criticism do you mean? As you point out, breast cancer does predominantly affect women...

In modern times, Pink#In gender is indeed usually associated with the female gender. That seems to make it a fairly logical color choice, for an Awareness ribbon campaign.

I'm not sure how that could be seen as sexist (or infantile)? If you have details, or ideally some sources/citations that formally assert this criticism, that might help. Thanks. –Quiddity (talk) 21:07, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

It's sexist if you're a man with breast cancer. Imagine how alienating that girly-pink world must be for them. Pink also associated with a particular view of femininity, the view of females as frilly, decorative objects (e.g., Pink dress of Marilyn Monroe)—perhaps desirable, but not independent and powerful. It's infantilizing because pink is the color of choice for little girls, not for women in their 60s and 70s.
