NPOV edit

The "Early history" and especially "Recent threats" contains some very POV language: "under attack", "came to the rescue", "led a fight", "permanently flaw the pristine character of this unique National Historic Landmark", etc. This needs to be rewritten in a neutral and encyclopedic tone.
