Added a picture demonstration. Let me know what you think. --TJive 06:21, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

I think it's too much. We don't need to see that there is a difference between creatures, just in colors. Maybe a picture comparing Mario and Luigi, split screen style. Just make sure that they are big enough so we can see the difference.

Fair use rationale for Image:Palette Swap.png edit

Image:Palette Swap.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Cleanup edit

I've pulled through this article to remove the mention of any specific games, since there are no references demonstrating that these titles truly use palette swapping (rather than any of several other techniques). This includes the images. The examples largely don't help the article, anyway. -- Mikeblas (talk) 01:52, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

A few of these have to do with recoloring, rather than palette manipulation. Unfortunately, a few don't meet WP:EL or WP:REF. -- Mikeblas (talk) 17:01, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've removed the Mario and Luigi image. The supplied reference doesn't specifically say if the named game uses palette swapping or if the sprites were statically recolored, and in fact implies the latter. The GiantBomb link enumerates some games, but seems to be of dubious quality and I'm not sure it stands up to WP:REF. I've left it, though, and cleaned up the surrounding wording so it's not nearly as weasely.
I can't get the ZeldaUniverse link to work, but I can see that it's a forum post. These are clearly unacceptable per WP:REF and WP:EL, so I've removed it.
I've tagged the assertion that "recoloring" is a more general term for "palette swap" as dubious. My understanding is that recoloring is a static technqiue done by an artist (as explained here , for example) during design, while palette swapping is done dynamically at runtime.
I've also removed the image of Mario and Luigi. The supplied reference doesn't say much about the use of a palette swap for the characters, and instead implies that they're recolored. I don't think this article can claim fair use to any material from a copyright-protected game without deeply discussing the game's decision to use palette swapping and solid references that show that it really is using swapping. -- Mikeblas (talk) 17:22, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
As far as I'm aware, Nintendo haven't published anything about their sprite usage techniques. You might be able to find sources on places like http://www.romhacking.net/, or maybe by asking some of the other people who contributed to the article.
Aside from that: I'm sorry, I appreciate what you're doing, but your co-editing style is too destructive and dismissive for me. I'm going to back out now, and let you work on it unhindered.

Detox edit

The editor that has been working on this page needs to lay off the methamphetamine.

Please, either fix it or delete it if it is that bad, don't bother editing in each and every thing wrong with it. 124.168.33.143 (talk) 13:41, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I couldn't concentrate on the article with every other word buzzed for ambiguity.[citation needed] --Ye Olde Luke (talk) 00:32, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, are we supposed to get every possible study and put it here? How else are we supposed to let readers know that a majority of sports games used to use palette swapping without the word "most" otherwise? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Editor Sam (talkcontribs) 02:03, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

CGI animation edit

Is palette swap also used in CGI animation? I think this is evident when two characters share similar shapes. 121.58.220.31 (talk) 08:38, 12 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
