coprolite

edit

It might be a valuable anecdotal reference regarding the Bone Wars to mention that Marsh named coprolite after ED Cope. I read that in a book on the Bone Wars. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 04:52, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good story, but not so. Copro comes from the Gr. for fecees.--Wloveral (talk) 19:03, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The English language has easily a half dozen words for feces. Is there only one in Greek? 2601:444:380:2A07:220B:CEA4:971C:F40F (talk) 03:54, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Was Cope a student of Marsh?

edit

The "Career" section of the article states that Cope had been a student of Marsh. The article on Cope ironically contains more details on Marsh than this article on Marsh. The description there of the meeting of Cope and Marsh in Europe seems to indicate that Marsh's career developed later in time than Cope's, even though Cope was 9 yrs older. So I question the claim in this article that Cope was Marsh's student, but I will leave it to others to determine its accuracy. Aftermath (talk) 15:41, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I call shenanigans on that point, and removed it; it never came up in any Worcester I found. This article is rather weak at the moment but I intend to improve it up to Cope's standard when I have time :) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 17:43, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Cope nor Marsh were students of each other. They were more or less rivals charging against each other to name the most fossils. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raifu (talkcontribs) 22:19, 13 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cope was a student of Leidy's. Abyssal (talk) 17:27, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Too short- not a patch on Cope

edit

Obviously this article needs to be increased in detail. As someone has already commented here, there is more info on Marsh in Copes Page than in Marsh's!

  • I have crudely picked up a big chunk from Cope's page for now, it at least gives some more background/info on Marsh's life and his famous feud with Cope. Feel free to sort or even remove in due course.

Photo daft!

edit

Surely the men are not ready to dig at all. If you look properly, you will see that most have rifles, not shovels in their hands! My sense of humour means I'm not going to change it, besides which I don't know what they WERE ready for?!

Ready for Cope?!

Hi all -- Marsh is a major character in Michael Crichton's novel Dragon Teeth, which was published in 2017. Given the high profile of Michael Crichton, and the fact that the novel is entirely about the Bone Wars, do you think this factoid would be appropriate in the article, perhaps in a "In popular culture" section? -- Cloud atlas (talk) 04:18, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also, I just noticed that this is mentioned in an "Adaptations" section in the Bone Wars article. -- Cloud atlas (talk) 04:20, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

You should state more about family 2600:1005:B14F:395:8767:5D16:84B6:4B14 (talk) 19:31, 20 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite

edit

I've been meaning to work on this article for a long time (originally I was going to start it after getting Edward Drinker Cope to featured article status, and that was fourteen years ago) but finally got access to a few tough-to-find sources, including the 1940 biography and McCarren. In the interest of having content properly attributed from jump I'm developing a draft at User:David Fuchs/draft to eventually port over. Opinions or help are welcome. Red Cloud Agency

edit

At one time, this page included a full paragraph of historically accurate information about Professor Marsh's involvement in exposing corruption in the Bureau of Indian Affairs Red Cloud Agency and reporting it to President Grant in 1875. Any idea why that information would have been removed? Seems there is no point of editing it back into the page, if someone just intends to remove it again.
