New Picture of North Park sign
editI replaced Chicbicyclist's photo of the North Park sign with a cleaner picture of a similar scene. Chicbicyclist's photo had some smudges and glare that obscured the view. Thanks, Lrtman (talk) 00:01, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- The new picture may be clearer, but the sign is too far away. You can't even read it. I think the previous one is better, until someone comes up with a new one. --anietor (talk) 00:13, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Old comments
editI started some expandsion on this page by taking the "transportation" section from the Hillcrest page and altering it for North Park.Ltruett 14:50, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Ltruett
- Looks good. Thanks, -Will Beback 07:28, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- I improved it a bit more and added more infos--Chicbicyclist 09:22, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for improving the transportation section. Still a ways to go before this is up to Hilcrest, but so far the article looks good.Ltruett 14:57, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Ltruett
I removed alot of promotional stuff that are more at home in a travel brochure. Please refrain from doing so again in the future.--Chicbicyclist 20:27, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Paul, for the great wealth of history you've contributed to this article. Till now I didn't know how "North Park" got its name.--Moksharamana 01:44, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, good job but I removed a couple of unencyclopedic stuff. I als removed the statment that it is the busiest commercial center since this is no longer the case--Chicbicyclist 04:16, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I appreciate the edits -- it reads much better now after you both helped rewrite and edited the history section.! :) --paulwade 00:34, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
A "Sizable Gay Community"
editI understand that maybe someone wanted to call attention to the fact that there are Gays in North Park -- but what is the point? To attract Gays to the community? Where is the facts? What exactly does the word "sizable" mean? Do you have a reference for that? I mean why don't I put: North Park has a sizable amount of Fire Hydrants. Or North Park has many people who enjoy the missionary position? If you have a FACT about the gay population in North Park -- include it and give a reference -- and have a reason for doing so. If you don't have a reason for it, then why include it. I live in North Park and have some gay neighbors and some straight. So what? I'm striking it from the article for now. Add it back in later with legitimate references if you see fit.
- One just needs to walk around North Park to notice this. I don't have any references but its not any secret that gay people have a sizeable community in North Park because of its proximity to Hillcrest. Gay bars(at least 6 - if thats not sizeable, I don't know what is), gay publications and businesses with the rainbow GLBT flags signifying GLBT friendliness can be seen dotting around the area. If you insist still insist that the area doesnt have a sizeable gay population(I'll use that more neutral language from now on), then you'll have to also cite the satement "interest in the history of North Park (especially its architecture) appears to be growing" with cold hard fact even though we both know its common knowledge. --Chicbicyclist 20:07, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I would like to add that I am mentioning it in the article because they are a part of the "culture" of North Park. The presence of a sizeable gay population arguably has alot of influence in the neighborhood since they partly contribute to a rapid gentrification of a community, especially inner city ones like North Park(please see gentrification).--Chicbicyclist 21:18, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- Is this an GLBT-activistical-sentence for you that you need to keep in here for some reason? If you want to put something along the lines of "Due to it's proximity to Hillcrest, which is considered by many to be the GLBT epicenter of San Diego County, North Park has a more-active-than-average gay community -- including <blah blah blah> (REFERENCE NEEDED.) Don't just make stuff up, Chicbicyclist. Give me some facts. What makes North Park worthy of mention of being Gay Centric and not Latino Centric or Missionary-Position Centric or Padre-Fan centric or Firehydrant-centric. Basically nothing, my friend. Basically, what you are doing, is Gay-ifying North Park -- and you and I know that's just a bunch non-referenced stuff you came up with. Sure there are Rainbow flags at Shooters and hanging on various bungalows in the area. But I've seen some with Dogs on them. Does that mean that North Park is some sort of Dog-lovers mecca of San Diego? Find a study that shows that North Park has a higher-than-average Gay Population than other areas of San Diego County -- then reference the stats. ]]).--Paul Wade
- I am not gay-ifying North Park. It's already that way. Sadly, no official figures exist about the actual population of GLBT people in North Park, but so does for Hillcrest. Are you going to deny that Hillcrest don't have a higher than average gay population as well?
- "Find a study that shows that North Park has a higher-than-average Gay Population than other areas of San Diego County -- then reference the stats. ]]).--Paul Wade"
- Well there are no official studies but it is already assumed and there are a few anecdotes including this one: [[1]].
- I also mentioned the higher than average concentration of gay bars in the area which is usually an indication of a higher than average glbt population.
- You do have a point about mentioning other groups and say that North Park is a diverse, but I stand by my statement that the glbt is culturally significant to North Park today. How about this compomise:
- North Park is one of the most diverse communities in San Diego and has sizeable populations of Latinos, Caucasians, African-Americans, Asians. A large population of gays, lesbians, bisexuals transgendereds are also present.
- --Chicbicyclist 03:10, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- That is a good compromise, Chicbicyclist -- but I've broken your statement out into a new section I've entitled "North Park's Diverse Culture" -- and added an extra bit of info to the end of the sentence. Can you pls. check it and let me know what you think? Thanks for offering the compromise. --paulwade 15:17, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds good, but I dont think it deserves its own section just yet, it might be better to put it as an intro in the Arts, Culture and Cuisine section(the diversity is what defines North Park's culture after all), but I'll leave it as it is for now just to see if it is expanded later.--Chicbicyclist 20:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- I live in north park and I get a sense that the information in the diversity section is basically true, but the whole thing reads very suspect as is. aren't there any statistics out there on racial makeup? and if you know of a number of gay oriented businesses in the area, then that would add some evidence better than just noting the subjectively large number of homosexuals you observe "in the mix". I've lived in North Park for ten years. Any resident of the area, and most San Diegans, will tell you without hesitation that it has a large LGBT population. It's no big secret. While there many whites and Hispanics, I there seems to be a much smaller number of African-Americans or Asians. The diversity blurb as it was before seemed like it was written by a real estate agent trying to sell North Park properties to minorities, or by some Chamber of Commerce whore. North Park Nights
edit- North Park Nights, formerly Ray at Night, is an arts festival held on the second Saturday evening of each month.[1] The festival was originally hosted by Ray Street, a small street containing a number of art galleries.

editThis sounds like a great event, but our description needs to be supported by sources and stay within a reasonable length. If it's notable then perhaps it merits an article of its own. BUt first let's see some 3rd party reliable sources, like newspaper or magazine articles, that describe it. Will Beback talk 19:30, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
