"Initially" edit

"The tribe initially had a one acre (4,000 m²) reservation that was established in 1971"

I changed this line, as "initially" is a terribly inaccurate word implying that the tribe originated somewhere around 1971, when in reality they had been in the area for hundreds of years. Murderbike 21:55, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

possible reduction edit

Can someone write about the tribe's attempt to disenroll 306 members? —Tamfang (talk) 00:28, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

The 306 enrolled(beginning in 1984) under the original Nooksack Constitution and Bylaws. The Nooksack Constitution and Bylaws were formally revised in 1989 via a BIA sponsored Secretarial Election, Section H was a part of this Special Election. Therefore, the 306 could not have been enrolled via section H, it did not exist in 1984. It is the individuals responsibility to provide documentation supporting their application for membership. The 306 were given an opportunity to provide documentation, only one of the 306 has proven to be eligible per the current Nooksack Indian Tribal Constitution and Bylaws. The remaining members of the 306 were formally removed from the rolls as members of the Nooksack Tribe in 2018. 2601:602:981:39B0:548D:A753:FD63:ED4B (talk) 05:04, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Where is the reservation? edit

The map in the infobox shows the reservation as a small square east of Deming, but the coordinates in the text (48°53′03″N 122°20′54″W) are for a point several miles downriver. —Tamfang (talk) 00:47, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Today I found a map showing the reservation: it is in many pieces scattered along the river (mostly left bank) from Deming down to Everson. —Tamfang (talk) 18:07, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Marietta Band of Nooksacks edit

I'll start a stub so "Expand from German version" can be put on this page; and this is a case in point why ethnic group articles are not automatically redirectable, or vice-versa, to tribal government articles.Skookum1 (talk) 05:09, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Short article on small, recently recognized tribe. Could use some historical and legal expansion, and perhaps some additional citations. But given the small size of the tribe, it's unlikely to require a particularly long article --Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters (16 March 06)
  • Given its short length, few sources, and lack of citations, I'm rating this a stub instead of a start as Lulu did --Miskwito 21:56, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Significance since early 21st century edit

Since 2013, the tribe has been in the news because of a bitter controversy over membership and elections, decades after some persons of the rejected group began to be enrolled in the tribe in the 1980s. Finally, in 2018, some 306 persons who identify as Nooksack and as descendants of Annie George (b. 1875 in British Columbia) were disenrolled. This issue goes beyond one tribe as disenrollments have become more frequent among Native American nations. The issue touches on issues of identity, culture and history of the tribes, and of their dealings and history with the federal government.Parkwells (talk) 16:45, 5 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
