Comparison Chart

I was just reading the comparison chart which lists features of all the DS models. Specifically, I was looking at the area which describes the controls. Apparently, the DS/Lite/i/iXL all have a volume slider and other controls in common. Well, it's true that the old white, red and blue DS Lite units I used to own did have volume sliders on the front edge. However, the two DSi's my kids got at Christmas 2010 don't have a volume slider per se; rather, it is a volume rocker on the left side. I am very fearful of playing with the chart contents for fear of completely wrecking the layout, so if someone else could just make the adjustments... 139.103.45.107 (talk) 19:13, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Done. --Dorsal Axe 20:36, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Someone please change the specs listed for the RAM and CPU speed on the 3DS in the comparison chart. The sources provided give no evidence to support the specifications listed. User:GRevolution

European Price

I've read in multiple places that the European prices for the 3DS are going to be set by retailers. If that is the case, I believe we should list it as such, as "Set by retailer" on the article and table. I see a user is going about listing the most common verified ones, and I think that's a bad idea I think it'll get to be ridiculous as far as every random person inserting a small variation from X random store. (For example, I can see people adding 250, 249.99, 247, 244, etc) Thoughts? Sergecross73 msg me 16:15, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Nintendo hasn't officially announced a price/price range? If this is the case, then I agree that the best solution would be to list is as "set by retailer". TheStickMan[✆Talk] 16:19, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Yep, I also agree. Given that it's the only official line on this we have, and so we don't spend all day every day changing the price range. --Dorsal Axe 16:27, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Also in full agreement. :) Sepmix (talk) 16:39, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Well at lanuch we might be able to get an average price range from a reliable source which could be worth adding, also this page is getting to long, time for an archive I say. --sss333 (talk) 04:29, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps listing an average, then a price range? ("selling for Between X and Y, an average of Z"). HMV is currently highest with £229.99, while Game Gears is the winner with £194.99[1]. Also yes, this page is getting too long, and has a few repeated questions. JaffaCakeLover (talk) 13:14, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
No, that'd be WP:OR, and would lead us back to the problems I listed above, with people constantly changing it with some random store who's selling it for an insignificant fraction less (or more.) Sergecross73 msg me 13:43, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
I agree that "set by retailer" should be the phrase used, but also include a launch date price range. IF your looking for one, the head of NoUK Laurent Fischer has stated that nintendo have looked into the range of prices and see the range being £219.99 - £229.99. It could be worthwhile to include that. Weeman com (talk) 17:35, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Does "No UK" stand for "Nintendo UK"? If not, then I'm unfamiliar with it. But yes, if there's a reliable source that says it, it could be included. Sergecross73 msg me 17:40, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah NoUK is just my cheap gamers way of not having to type it all out in full. Around the world it is Nintendo of ....., so it would shorten to No...

3DS Final Design

You should put the final 3DS design on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.44.153.248 (talk) 17:07, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Again with this? Someone did upload a pic, but it was taken down because of copyright issues. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 17:56, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

You don't have to. But to me, it doesn't make any sense to have the wrong design.70.44.153.248 (talk) 03:21, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Ethan

Unless I'm mistaken, a picture from Nintendo cannot be used. If you would be so kind as to find a "final design 3DS" out there, maybe from an event or post-release, take your own picture of it,

and edit that pic or let someone else edit it so it looks neat, then that picture would be suitable for this article. But we don't. Unless you can come up with a better solution, the not-final-design pic stays. And really, to be honest, the only differences with that pic and the final design are extremely minor and not easily noticed. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 15:48, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Pictochat

Bill Trinen has commented that Pictochat as we know it is not in the 3DS as yet, and has more or less confirmed that it wont be in the system. That is not a reliable source though. Blogs typically aren't. (I especially have a problem with that one, considering they still have "Golden Sun 3" listed as a 3DS game... >_> Sergecross73 msg me 15:54, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I know its not a proper wikipedia source, but at the time i could not find an appropriate source... Im sure this would lead to the finding of a reliable source. Then again a lot of reliable sources take their info/cues from blogs! Blogs are becoming the first source of all information, and Kotaku.com is a blog but it is referenced in a lot of wikipedia articles. References

Should the tag Cleanup-link rot|date=January 2011 be added to the article? There is plenty of bare URLs in the refs.

Also, refs 16 to 23 all point to the same page, is it supposed to be like that? -- Lemon's Pride (talk) 23:32, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

3D photo / video file formats?

Maybe this is somehow a stupid question, but the article mentions that the 3DS will be capable of taking 3D photos and videos. Any idea what file formats these will be in? If you do know, please link to it. Thanks! ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 20:25, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't know what it really is on the 3DS, but I know some common ones are AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, MPEG, and FLV. It could even be a completely different one because of the 3D.70.44.153.248 (talk) 21:11, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Ethan
It saves in open .mpo "multi picture object" it is the same format that was used in the "fujifilm finepix" real3D w1 camera. the format is proposed as an open standard by CIPA. they contain multiple jpeg images with respective thumbnails and metadata.file formats which can be read and shown in 3D on 3D computers. i think normal computers can show it in 2D, i don`t know if the 2D camera at front does the same. i read it here http://nintendo3dsblog.com/ the author claims he found it on twitter. nin3ds —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.165.219.69 (talk) 14:36, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

3DS Image

Is the current 3DS image subject to copyright or something? I can't believe the final 3DS design is up. I hope no one removes it.70.44.153.248 (talk) 00:28, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Ethan

I'm not sure. It was taken off Flickr, and I'm not sure if we can just use any photo off Flickr. I think it's safe, though... TheStickMan[✆Talk] 00:36, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
When looking for free files, we can only take files from Flickr if they are freely licensed to allow unlimited reuse (including commercial) and the creation of derivative works. The file on Flickr is currently licensed to fit Wikipedia's needs, so we can use it, assuming that the work was indeed created by the person who claims that they did. It is a great image for the article. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:00, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
It's good? Finally. And Ethan, when making a new section, the title goes between pairs of equal signs, not triplets. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 03:15, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Wait... he changed it! He changed a perfectly good picture with another one from some news site. I don't think that this one is clean... TheStickMan[✆Talk] 22:58, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
I found the reason - the image was deleted from the Wikimedia Commons. Check out the deletion discussion for the image - the image, which was taken from Flickr, was apparently taken from another user on Flickr, who licensed the image with a license not compatible with Wikipedia. As a result, it was removed. As for the new image, I'll have to take a closer look at its sourcing when I have the time. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:43, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Picture

The first animated 3DS picture was good but the new one is bad. Can someone change it back to a real picture of the 3DS. I would change it myself but i'm an IP user. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 22:00, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

What do you mean when you say "real" picture? Do you mean the images that Nintendo has released and uses for marketing? If so, we cannot use those images. Those images are fully copyrighted by Nintendo. We need to provide free images of the 3DS. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:06, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Well before we had the computer animated picture's we had a real picture of the 3DS. I just want it changed back to the picture that we had before we had any of the computer animated ones. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 22:18, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Do you mean this pic? A certain IP would refuse to stop causing commotion because it wasn't the final design. There was another good pic, but that was taken down because it was taken from another guy's Flickr. As for the current one... I have no clue. Sorry. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 22:46, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

3DS RAM

Earlier this month (January 2nd-3rd), someone in China who worked at the factory producing 3DS consoles managed to smuggle one unit off the production line, to post pictures. Since it did not have the main operating system flashed to it, it only boots to a useless POST screen, but this screen reveals how much RAM is on the thing: a whopping 96MB RAM. Image is here: http://i53.tinypic.com/1jrtpx.jpg --Techokami (talk) 02:14, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's been discussed already. Stolen items from random unidentified factory workers don't count as a reliable source. Reliable sources have covered the story, but they haven't confirmed things like specs for the system. Sergecross73 msg me 02:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

DS Lite battery life error?

The table comparison currently says "15 to 19 hours, depending on screen brightness." That's incorrect because 15-19 is the battery life specifically for the lowest brightness level. Nintendo's FAQ states 5-9 for the highest level, so wouldn't that mean the battery life should state "5 to 19 hours, depending on screen brightness"? http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/dslite/battery_faq.jsp —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.118.72.14 (talk) 08:30, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Older History information

I'm working on cutting down on some of the history section. There's a lot of information, (like what analysts thought the system might/should have,) that was useful a while back, but is now largely irrelevant with official info being released. Sergecross73 msg me 16:36, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't mind, provided you don't really remove anything from the very first section, given that is the only bit to contain real development background on this device. But yeah, we definitely don't need all the predictions and stuff.--Dorsal Axe 11:50, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Based on my understanding of developmental psychology (I claim no expertise in the subject but am taking a university graduate course that pertains to it), this article explains why the 3DS is expected to potentially cause damage to the developing vision of young children. Could anyone find any sources that link the topic of this article to the 3DS health risks? -Kerrick Staley 21:56, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

The article doesn't talk about health risks at all. The purpose of Ebert's article/Murch's letter is to explain why 3D doesn't work, not how young children can be harmed. Nintendo Zone sounds like it could go on there. The health and "system settings" stuff though, they're not really "features". It's not listed for any of the other DS versions either. I think that'd kinda like mentioning that the physical unit comes in a box, with an instruction manual. It's just kind of assumed... Sergecross73 msg me 14:17, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Can you at least add the Health and Safety application?--173.86.30.16 (talk) 18:21, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Ethan
... Did you read what he said? TheStickMan[✆Talk] 22:36, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

...Nevermind. I think the Health and Safety application should be added too, or instead of Nintendo Zone because Nintendo Zone is for Japan.--24.115.56.51 (talk) 22:42, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Ethan

And you still didn't read why Serge doesn't think Health and Safety should be added? TheStickMan[✆Talk] 22:48, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Nintendo Zone might be in America too. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 01:11, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Allright, whatever. I don't care what you add or remove. I'll get my information about the 3DS from Nintendo, not Wikipedia.--173.86.30.16 (talk) 13:26, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Ethan
One, I'm confused on your insistence of such a minor feature. Any particular reason you feel so strongly, you haven't really expressed why it's inclusion is important. Secondly, I don't know why you're talking about where you'll "get your information" from, when we're talking about adding information that isn't there yet. Nintendo eShop

Can someone make an article about this. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 21:20, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Is there really enough known about it that it needs it's own article. Especially at this point, where's not really many/any confirmed games for it? Sergecross73 msg me 14:20, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, not much is known about it. I do agree that an article about it will have to be made eventually, though. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 17:55, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

And the Internet Browser should removed from the preloaded applications, because its not a preloaded application. It won't be available in till the end of May when the eShop comes out. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 01:15, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

I think the Nintendo DSI XL will ONLY remain after the release of the 3DS.

Wikidexal I doubt they will make a 3DS lite or a 3DS XL or a 4DS but if you think there will be and you want it added you'll need a reliable source. -Bradford 24.115.88.249 (talk) 03:20, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

No reliable sources are going to comment on such a thing. The first version of the 3ds isn't out, there's no way Nintendo would discuss any sort of revisions or successors to it for years. Sergecross73 msg me 03:33, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Do your research. In a section in an Iwata asks article on Nintendo's website, Iwata specifically states that there would not be a 3DS lite or 4DS.70.44.153.248 (talk) 17:53, 13 March 2011 (UTC)Ethan
Really? I must find this... TheStickMan[✆Talk] 01:56, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
True, however, I'm pretty sure Iwata said that after I made this comment, almost a month ago...>_> Sergecross73 msg me 03:14, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Iwata said it was hard enough to make the Nintendo 3DS. I think it would be nearly impossible to make a 3DS lite or 4DS.70.44.153.248 (talk) 22:52, 16 March 2011 (UTC)Ethan
Can you give us a link, please? TheStickMan[✆Talk] 23:03, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
It was covered all over, but here's where I first read it here: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/01/27/no-short-term-plans-for-nintendo-3ds-lite-say-nintendo-management/ While I personally don't believe it, that is the official word, and could be included in the article somewhere as well I suppose... Unlocked page

Is the 3DS page really unlocked, is it a glitch on my computer. Cause it says I can edit it now. Is it really unlocked? Because I thought they would never unlock it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.86.3.20 (talk) 17:15, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it is unlocked right now. For now anyways...there have been all sorts of poor editing choices going on since it's been unlocked, I imagine it'll get locked again... >_> Sergecross73 msg me 17:47, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
If there are enough cases of vandalism, addition of unsourced information, etc., then admins will be deem this article worthy of another round of semi-protection. This is quite a popular page to edit, with people eager to "help". Don't be suprised if the "Edit" button once again becomes "View Source", especially around the Japanese release. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 18:01, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Ugh, I come back from vacation to find it unlocked. Vandalism seems to have been pretty bad since unlock, and hopefully it will be semi-protected until well after Australian launch. As The Stick Man said, too many people see eager to help, but post things without sufficient information to back it up. -- Sleegi[✆Talk] 22:15, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Actually I'd say reletively speaking the actual /vandalism/ is pretty small. There's just a lot of unsourced/rumor-based edits. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ (talk) 23:07, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, but I think that's a big part of why it was locked before. It's never really been "3DS suxs!!" type comments that has bothered the article, it's most just people putting every unsourced rumor or random thought on the system... Sergecross73 msg me 18:15, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

3DS Colours

Currently, the launch colours of the 3DS are listed as "Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black" - should this not be Cosmos Black? Conrad1on (talk) 08:53, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm seeing it called Cosmo Black by most. Does Big N itself call it "Cosmos" Black? I can't check it myself at the moment... TheStickMan[✆Talk] 18:03, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
The Big N (via the 3DS page on Nintendo.com) calls it Cosmo Black, not Cosmos.-- Sleegi[✆Talk] 18:36, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, Nintendo's UK site has it listed as 'Cosmos Black' - http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/hardware_30816.html. 'Cosmos' does make more sense than 'Cosmo' in my opinion, but I realise that doesn't necessarily mean anything in the world of games. Conrad1on (talk) 07:38, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
It might be a US vs UK thing... Cosmos would sound weird as an adjective in the US, Cosmo wouldn't. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 00:31, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

So, DS wireless multiplayer support?

A few months ago (now it's in Archive 1), I asked, "If you had a DS and a 3DS (or two 3DSs) and two regular DS games that are normally able to communicate with each other with the help of DS wireless mutiplayer capability, could you utilize the games' wireless multiplayer functions with the hardware available? The article doesn't mention or imply anything that might clarify." Nintendo's been somewhat evasive on this topic, but now that the 3DS is actually out, has anyone actually tried to test regular DS multiplayer with one or more 3DS units? It's not just because I want to know, but I definitely think the article should clarify since this wasn't true with the GBA-DS transition. Henjeng55155 (talk) 19:43, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

I still haven't seen anything yet either. Sergecross73 msg me 00:11, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm interested to see if Virtual Console Game Boy games like Pokemon Red can communicate with DS or 3DS games. It seems unlikely though. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 00:37, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
