Actor Nilu Phule passed away on 13th July, 2009

A TRIBUTE TO NILE PHULE : Nilu Phule – the renowned actor died on 12th July 2009. This news brought in a flash in my memory. I didn’t realize how this man helped in building me up a confident woman. Oh! I knew him …. But as millions of spectators of course, he didn’t know me!

Let me give bit of background…Growing up in 1980s, I come from a middle class educated background. My grandfather was a thorough Gandhian freedom fighter. We were brought up in an environment of “ Bura Mat dekho, Bura mat sunoo, Bura mat bolo, infact bura maat soocho”. Good for basics… but real life ain’t so kind. My parents would dissuade us from speaking, watching or even hearing bad things in life. It was their ways of protecting us from evils.

I was a quiet and studious girl.. kept to myself, only ranks mattered to me… who could debate for hours but find it difficult to discuss personal feelings with family or few friends I had. Ingrained was the Gandhian culture-Talk less, focus on actions. Never question the elders, Treat them with respect. A clear candidate for child molesters…

As a growing up girls there are number of lecherous uncles, neighbours, so called friends.. and if a girl sees the world from rose tinted glasses. She is in for trouble.

God is your saviour.. and may be the confidence and democratic background otherwise our family had helped me at least get a better observing power but our education in these matters stopped at that. Turning 11-12 years, I would notice how these lecherous types behaved with the other growing up girls entering their teens. I would be disturbed but would not comprehend the situation.

One of the Holi festival days” memory is still sharp and clear in my mind.

There was a childless Sindhi couple quite nice and flamboyant. Aunty was well versed in cooking and would cook marvelous spreads for everyone. She maintained the “little savings” that housewives in the building would save away from their husband’s eyes. Enthusiastically, dress up the children in the buidling for their school programmes. Since they had no children, everyone would have soft corner for them and all of us were supposed to make up to them.. informing them of our milestones. .. take blessings on birthdays, festivals,.. etc, etc.

That year a new girl- Divya’s family shifted to Mumbai from Nagpur. Initially, She was a simple and happy go lucky girl. But with sudden exposure to the open culture in Mumbai, she really turned into a Diva… Well good for her. She would usually frequent our house to meet with my elder sisters. On Holi day, all the boys were quite upbeat and looking forward to get a glimpse or if luck allows.. get an opportunity to put color on her. But to give the credit to youngsters, no one crossed the line. We had a great time as usual. Everyone came home for usual ‘Maaal Pua’ and snacks at our home.

I went in to wash color in my eyes and saw this great Sindhi uncle in our bedroom lying on top of Divya and putting color on her. She was trying to call out.. “ No uncle… No Uncle.. please” . Not understanding, I watched and by then my sisters came in and screamed. He just smiled and got off saying ‘’ Arre …Its Holi and she is scared of colors” Tapped our heads and walked away non-chalantly.

When we mentioned it our Mum… As usual she shooed us away .. nothing happened. He was just being funny. We don’t talk about elders. The women folk just … hushed about tone mentioned how fast the girl was and poor man with no kids … doesn’t mean harm but gets a bit carried away because of such fast girls!

I was confused and I didn’t know whom to talk. But young mind keeps looking for solutions. At that point of time Nilu Phule came to my rescue. He usually portrayed a cunning and villainous village-based character with a typical innocent 'Gandhi' look in most of his movies. Usually a relative, neighbour or in short a confidant of the woman with whom he misbehaved. It just struck to me… there is nothing wrong in being a girl. It is these kind of men who have a wrong bent of mind. There is nothing girls do to attract such men. Such men always look for soft targets! Usually, they get away because the women don’t protest and the society shields such characters.

I believe whatever, character an actor portrays.. he does add value to our lives. I bid adieu and thank Nilu Phule… I have hated him all my life. He has given me immense strength. He had infact, filled in a gap which my parents had left open. Thanks , Nilu Phule for helping me identifying the grey shades in personalities and teaching me to address them. Mentioning Caste

Dear Editors!
There has been a discussion on India Portal related to mentioning of caste of subjects. The point is that mentioning caste of people, who have nothing to do with their caste, is found to be unnecessary by few editors. Hence the caste of the subject person needs to be deleted from the biography. I am not deleting the caste as of now but am only posting this here so that the regular editors of this article are well aware of it beforehand and no edit-wars take place. For details of discussion held on the portal please refer Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Mentioning_caste_of_Individuals. Your views if any are welcome there or even here.
And.... as the reasons of exclusion of caste pointed out were "irrelavant to notability of subject person", "privacy of the subject person", "inclusion of caste is like branding individuals", etc. other information included in the article which also fall under these cases will also be removed after discussions. Examples of it included religion, non-notable spouse's and children's and parents' information, previous occupation, lived in places, non-notability related educational qualification, etc.
