Image:Neardarkseverin.jpg is being used on this article. • Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, and Lance Henriksen all appeared in Aliens, which was directed by James Cameron. All three actors were cast in Near Dark separately, without knowing that they were all auditioning for the same movie for the second time. In one scene, Caleb passes a cinema in which Aliens is screening. Also appearing in a bar scene of the film and further connecting the film to James Cameron was Robert Winley, who later played the cigar-smoking biker ("you forgot to say please") in the bar scene of Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

• On the DVD interviews, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton explained the lengths to which they went to develop their characters. Among other things, Henriksen constructed an elaborate backstory involving Jesse's service in the Confederate States Navy. This is alluded to in the film when Jesse slyly mentions that he fought for the South and "we lost". Paxton also alludes to the two being responsible for the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

• Henriksen decided that Jesse should appear emaciated; he accordingly lost so much weight to fit the image that he lost much of his muscle tone, and threw his back out while climbing the stairs of his house.

• Despite being about vampires, the word vampire is never uttered in the film.

• Eric Red has mentioned in a recent interview that he had plans for a sequel that took place 15 years after Near Dark, following Sarah fighting relatives of the vampire 'family' from the first film.

• This film was #64 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

• The film appears to be the subject of a remake, according to the production blog of Platinum Dunes (responsible for recent Amityville Horror, Texas Chainsaw, and Hitcher remakes.)

• A few scenes of violence were trimmed in order to avoid an "X" rating, namely the scenes where Homer kills the man who helps him off the ground, when Mae kills the truck driver, and when Diamondback slits the barmaid's throat.

Commenting on size of plot which appears to be in dispute

I'd go with the bigger size myself. I feel that there would be enough commentary to expand critique/themes/cast gossip or whatever so that the total size of the article is over double the size of the larger plot. Casliber (talk · contribs) 01:46, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. Per WP:MOSFILM, it should be around 400-700 words. It is currently 876, so it is not that bad, though getting it closer to 400-600 would be better (and a needed step for higher class ratings). Mostly it seems like it just needs tightening up of the prose, with some minor details removed. As such, the current longer plot should stay until it can be edited down, rather than ripping it out to leave a useless stub space. Please go read ANI for all the comments pointing out that your interpretation of WP:NOT when it comes to plot summaries is completely wrong. I can't believe after all that you are still insisting you are right. Okay, I've trimmed down the plot length (and why some folk were cutting the entire plot or tagging it rather than fixing it is completely beyond me) to around 420 words. My commonsense instinct tells me there would be material out there as there has been quite a bit of commentary on vampire films over recent years. Skal reference

Removed the following claim: "In his book, Monster Show: Cultural History of Horror, film critic David J. Skal highly praises the film's mix of western and horror genres, and homeless wanderings and undeath." Could find no reference to Near Dark in Skal's book (isbn 0-571-19996-8); if I'm wrong, a page number for the reference is in order. Richigi (talk) 02:30, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Marcie Leeds

The link for Marcie Leeds goes directly to her IMdB page. Is this allowed? It seems rather unorthodox to me, and I'm wondering if it violates WP guidelines. Can a WP editor give a ruling on this? Gil gosseyn (talk) 07:49, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

The link was created using a template meant to be used only in external links sections (Template:IMDB name); I removed it. Inline links leading to external sites are discouraged (exceptions are rare). In particular, this link was confusing because the template made it appear to be a wikilink. I left the brackets to make Leeds a redlink, but even that may need to be reconsidered—not sure she's likely to ever get her own article. Richigi (talk) 20:43, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

How is this “ However, there is also a much more obscure casting connection between Near Dark and the Terminator movies: Robert Winley, who played a biker in the bar scene in Near Dark, and who had never been in any James Cameron movies at that time, later played the biker whose clothes, boots, and motorcycle are stolen by the T-800 in a very similar bar scene at the beginning of Terminator 2.
