Sasuke/Itachi

I just noticed that 'Uchiha Sasuke' is listed under the enemies list. This appears to be a mistake, Sasuke being one of the main protagonists. The list is probably referring to his brother 'Uchiha Itachi,' a major antagonist. This might need fixing.

Without giving away any further spoilers, this is not a mistake. --Pentasyllabic 22:20, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm kind of curious how to classify him though; at his core, he does not desire to be an enemy, but he chooses to become one in order to achieve his goal.... ~MDD4696 (talkcontribs) 22:55, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
At his core, he desires to kill Itachi. He'll do anything for that. He might not desire to be an enemy, but he has made the choice of being one, and I doubt he regrets it.--JadziaLover 23:08, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
I stongly disagree with the placement of Sasuke as an enemy! Even after he did some serious ass kicking... I still think that he's Naruto's friend, which makes him a protagonist by this show's standards...
It's explained why Sasuke is an enemy in the page Uchiha Sasuke, there are spoilers though.Dieboybun 05:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Why don't you list him as Neutral. He doen't seem to have any definate alignment. He's just out to fulfill his own desire, to kill Itachi. --DragonMaster 18:57, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

If anything, Sasuke's neutral. I know this is a little difficult for some to comprehend, but Japanese literature is filled with characters who are "grey", neither friend nor foe. He hasn't even killed anyone. Not everything is as simple as "enemy" and "hero". Sasuke's always been an antihero.
sasuke should be classified under both, sasuke before he ran away to join orochimaru and after because, even though he is naruto's friend before he ran away, during his fight with naruto he says that he is through playing with konoha and all the children in it
I dunno, if its at the current state. Sasuke can be classed as a enemy. But it also depends on how you look at it. People who read the manga and are up to date will probably class Sasuke as an enemy.
  • SPPOOOIILLL*

-Ichi- Sasuke believe it or not is an enemy because he went with Orochimaru and his ambition is too big. As all of the other "enemies" their problems were ambition and saying that Sasuke hasn't killed anyone yet doesn't matter SInce when sasuke fought naruto, He had the intention of killing him to "crush the friendship". Apparently he's not Naruto's friend any longer. "The moment you will do anything to kill a badguy is the moment you are one"

Not quite. Sasuke's reason for fighting Naruto was to ultimately gain the technique called "Mangekyou Sharingan", the most powerful technigue in the Uchiha clan. To achieve this technique, he must kill his best friend. The fact that he chooses Naruto for this "Honour" shows that he finally admits to Naruto being his equal. It is not to crush the friendship, but to confirm the rivalry that Sasuke fights Naruto.

Another strike against putting him as an emeny is that, in the end, he chose not to kill Naruto, so right now, neutral is probably the best place for him. --Ninja6Fett 23:58, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Just put him in both...

The Wretched

Sasuke isn't bad, he's going with a bad guy to kill Itachi, but that's just like one of those "The enemy of my enemy is my friend (or in this case mentor).

the mangas gotten to the point where we're gonna find out whether or not hes an enemy very soon. stay tuned

Again, without spoiling anything, there is no doubt that Uchiha Sasuke is an enemy. Please read Ch. 309 of the manga for proof. He considers not killing Team 'Kakashi' due to the fact that Akatsuki still proves a threat "a pitiful reason." He harbors much malice, and his disposition is incredibly similar to that of Orochimaru. He would kill the main protaganist, Naruto, (and anyone else from Konohagakure) with losing any sleep. I don't think there is any problem anymore. --KameKasu 17:49, 2 June 2006

List him as an enemy if you want to spoil it for those who don't know. If not, put him as nuetral. Ryu Ematsu

The Naruto Movie 1 Characters

Thought you might want to add Kazahana Dotou(Boss Snow guy...), Rouga Nadare(leader snow guy who fights Kakashi), Fuyukuma Mizore(snowboard dude), and Kakuyoku Fubuki(that one girl) the naruto characters list. --ACDCKakashi 20:05, 30 December 2005

Done. --Pentasyllabic 03:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Alright thanks thats awesome...but the wings...they all have them, or at least roga does for sure, i saw him on the back of his chakra armor as well, he just never used them. And i cant remember if Mizore had them or not, but he most likely did. --ACDCKakashi 2:55, 2 January 2006

Well, be bold and add it :) --Pentasyllabic 19:23, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Merge Characters Section

Hi all. The Naruto article is rather large and is getting difficult to read. Secondly, the character information doesn't even really belong here, since this is an article about the manga and anime in general. I propose that we merge all of the character information on the page into the appropriate articles. Any comments or suggestions? I'll begin the merging in a few days unless there is opposition. ~MDD4696 02:43, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

I'd say leave one- or two-line descriptions in, but merge the rest. --Pentasyllabic 05:44, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Pentasyllabic, but should all characters that are currently featured stay? I mean, it's not like Hinata and Tenten are that important ^^
A bit unrelated, but I think we should remove the English cast list and merge it with the respective character articles.--JadziaLover 13:58, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Keeping a few lines about the most important characters, i.e. Naruto and Sasuke, could be beneficial. Responding to your suggestion about the English cast list, JadziaLover - I think that having a list is useful, because it is easier to quickly find what you need. Having that information on the respective character pages would also be useful, so I think it could go both places. ~MDD4696 21:56, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
If we're going to list the English cast list, then the Japanese cast should be listed as well. I've removed the list for now though. --Pentasyllabic 22:10, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Why? Just add the Japanese voice actors. Just because you don't like dubs doesn't mean you can remove it. That is stupid. But as long as it doesn't have only the Japanese, I don't care. Dubs are better, usually anyway. - Starwind Amada
I didn't remove it because I don't like dubs, I removed it because I didn't think it (or a Japanese cast list) needed to be on this article. Please don't make inferences based on your own opinions. --Pentasyllabic 05:34, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
A good encyclopedic article would probably include information on the author's inspiration behind the characters as well. ~MDD4696 22:00, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

If it were up to me, I'd hack off all the historical crap and just put a streamlined character biography, but narutards.ytmnd.com/ they might kill me. Danny Lilithborne 08:22, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

I've merged the characters section into the appropriate articles. I also wrote a small section outlining some general Naruto character details, which I think is appropriate for this article. I hope that some of you can expand and improve upon it! ~MDD4696 06:45, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
I say put it back to the way it was, 'cause it's always easier when everything is in one place. I mean, now you got 2 articles of the same thing and it's kinda screwed up...
The Wretched

The Bird Country Characters

  • Meh, if someone could add that one dude Kakashi killed and the boss guy (Mousu or something like that, I'm lazy and don't feel like looking it up), it would be great. By the way, I may have to go back and look at the episode. They use so many damn jutsus! --ACDCKakashi 16:40, 2 January 2006
    • They're in filler episodes. Don't worry about it. You're not likely to find much information on websites anyway, since the Naruto fanscene is basically ruled by the Narutards, who act as if the fillers never happened. Danny Lilithborne 22:45, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

about spoilsport, spoiler

I think there must be a caution message on the top of the page that says "this page contains full of spoiler about the anime" so no enthusiasts learn the end of the next episodes too early.

There is already a spoiler warning at Naruto (manga)#Plot overview. ~MDD4696 05:21, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

While I agree, I learned everything about NAruto from spoilers, since I couldn't wait for the English version to catch up. Even with them, this show is awesome, and I still can't see what's coming next, or believe it unless I see it. This is the best show I have ever seen, so I learned almost everything about it (though I still can't pronounce the name of Kimimaro's Kekkei Genkai, and I have trouble spelling things).

Commonwealth versus American English

I noticed a few Commonwealth words in the article, and I thought it would be good to make a point of choosing Commonwealth or American English for the article, per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English. I believe the preferred spellings would be U.S. Standard English because the anime and manga are translated as such. ~MDD4696 07:10, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead. The commonwealth words you encountered are probably mine. --AceMyth 08:53, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

A few things

Hi. Here's a few things I've been thinking.

  • We don't have any real references/footnotes/quotations/anything. So if anyone knows of a reputable source that can be referenced in this article that would help. No chance of this article being featured without those.
  • A few more images wouldn't hurt. There's a wealth of them in other Naruto-related articles.
  • The opening and ending songs would look much more neat in a tabulated form.

Anyone who agrees/disagrees should please share their thoughts or go ahead and get busy. If I knew wiki-tables better than I did I'd already be on the songs issue. - Phorque 21:29, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Just a little comment...

I'm glad that this article discusses the fansub fandom of Naruto, because I read a quote in an article from a Viz executive that Naruto's dubbed version was going to have a large preexisting fanbase from the translated comics in Shonen Jump. He did not at all recognize the large effect of fansites and p2p programs that made Naruto as big as it is today.

Anyways, maybe we should emphasize this as an example of internet culture and how things spread quickly through devoted fans and available resources. Blueaster 03:45, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Do you by any chance remember where that article was? It would still be a valuable reference. ~MDD4696 04:14, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
Indeed, I actually added info to the fansub article based on "Dattebayo" fansubs of Naruto (how episodes are released in under 24 hours from the premiere in Tokyo). I think this is an interesting point and would be great to note in the article with a reference. - Phorque 19:50, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Manga chapters

Could somebody who is quite familiar with the manga put the equivalent manga chapters next to the story arcs. Or maybe at least specify the ranges for Naruto 1, Kakashi Gaiden and Naruto 2. I don't know the manga thaaaat well and this info might be somewhere on the web already. - Phorque 16:32, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

With over 300 chapters, that could take some time.

move to (anime and manga)

The original title suggested Naruto was only a manga, so I moved it to the new title. Hopefully I fixed all the things that broke because of the move, but I can't be too sure... -- EmperorBMA|話す 00:07, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Why did you name it Naruto (anime and manga) and not Naruto (manga and anime)? The manga did come first and is used as the basis for most of the Naruto pages ^^ --JadziaLover 01:01, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
The alphabetical one (a & m) seems to flow better in my mind than the chronological one (m & a). That's about all I can think of. -- EmperorBMA|話す 02:34, 17 February 2006 (UTC first of all anime is harder to make than manga so get over already

The article BLEACH was moved from Bleach (manga)... so in the same regard, should we just move Naruto to all-caps (NARUTO) as it is written in romanized Japanese? --Geopgeop 00:17, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Anime comes first in the alphabet, only that is the reason.

Soukou

The following information, which may be about a character from the Naruto anime or manga, was incorrectly incorporated into a page that listed it as a creature from Japanese mythology. The Soukou page is listed on AfD, because it's not a creature from Japanese mythology. However, editors may want to incorporate some of the following into the Naruto page:

Tale in the Legend of the Tailed Beasts: Sokou is a bijuu that looks like a reptile. It was a creature that lived near Mount Fuji. Because of the toxic gas and the volcaninc ash, he was transformed into a half-rooster, half-snake monster. The Rooster and Snake are husband and wife in Sokou’s body. Everything around it withers away or dies, because of its poison. According to the Legend, whenever he hibernates in Mount Fuji, the snoring he causes will make the volcano erupt.

Situation in the Ancient War of the 9 Gods: Battled 4 times; 3 Losses, 1 Flee Losses: Shukaku, Kaku, Houkou Escapes: Raijuu

Fate: Sokou was sealed by a master of demonic arts, called Yamazaki Ishiro, with the “Tool of power: Netted Moon Cage” to the seal in the Mount Fuji’s base. Sokou becomes unable to send out his poisonous gas from the mountain for all eternity.

Japanese Myth Appearance: A four-tailed Rooster / Snake mixture. The lower part of the body is a Snake, while the upper part is a Rooster. Crawls instead of walking (Just like desert scorpions. Most of the body parts have an orange tone. Lives in the mount Fuji.

Ability: Controls poison, poisonous gas, venoms, and so on. Symbolic Element: Poison Origin / Discovered in: Close to Tokyo, Mount Fuji. Personal notes: Well, it indeed makes you remember of Sasori. Just a little.

More info about Sokou: If you remember, Sokou is the oriental counterpart of the folklore creature Cockatrice. Sokou doesn’t have wings like it, though.

Are the fillers going to stay longer ?

I hope not, what are your thoughts? - unsigned

As I worked it out we have about 7 more episodes of filler from the last episode aired (176 methinks?). - Phorque 09:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
It was supposed to resume the normal story at 180. It seems this may have changed recently though. It's sad to see the show go down this path. --Kamasutra 10:19, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
The fillers are supposed to end in Spring. Apparently the rumour that they would end in April is false, since there's only one episode set to air in April left unknown and it doesn't look like it'll be a canon one. However, there are still some ten more episodes left in Spring, so there's still plenty of possible filler-time left...unfortunately. The last episode this Spring would be 190 (set to air on June 21)

Leafninja.com says that it 182 might be when the fillers end since the name of 182 is entitled "Episode 182: Reunion, The Time Left Over" so it could be a hint the end of the fillers.
I have a feeling that that will be the episode... but we'll see. ~MDD4696 00:01, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

on tv.com I believe they have episode titles for upcoming episodes 179-182. It's possible that the fillers will end by the end of March, as episode 182 is supposed to air 4/26... which means if 182 is the end of the filler episodes, then that means that new Naruto... or well.. Manga based Naruto will begin May 3rd... I wouldn't get my hope up though. Spazzy 7 04:34, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

I personally believe episode 200 will be the the start of the anime's Naruto part II adaption. It's my belief that they'll kill time with a few more filler episodes, then do Kakashi Gaiden until episode 199, followed by Naruto part II. Of course, that's speculation with no real basis in fact, other than the fact that it's the kind of thing TV shows do. --Venomaru 11:08, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

As there've been almost as many fillers as actual episodes (maybe more), I've lost hope that there'll ever be an end to the filler. Might as well get used to it. In fact, I think that if Naruto II ever gets aired, it'll be as a different series.--Frenchman113 19:49, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Actually, that's completely wrong. There have been 130 manga adaption episodes, whereas there have only been about 50 (give or take) filler episodes. --Venomaru 19:52, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
On the other hand, the filler saga is longer than most of the manga arcs...--Frenchman113 on wheels! 15:55, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree with with Frenchman113. If ever Naruto II gets an anime adaptation, it's possible that it will be a new series much like the transition from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z, which may take some time. --Beef noodles 19:39, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

on a fansub of episode 176, whoever did the sub left a note at the start that read "at least 26 more episodes of filler left". it was only a fansub, but take that as you will

The Creators probably think that the filler arcs are the best part because they made them. -DB

According to my last information, the filler arcs should end the first week of October, 2006. Blademaster313 22:04, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

That's just speculation isn't it. Because that is just way past spring and also they seem to be running out of ideas for fillers because they keep doing a lot of 1 episode fillers. Also where is that information from? No one has confirmed a date yet, but it is most likely that the fillers will end around 195 (because they could do Kakashi Gaiden and then Part 2 at 200), 200 (because it is a rounded off number), 204 (because it is change of opening and end theme) or 209 (because it is start of new season, if it is this the fillers will end in october, way too far). I think I'm going to cry :( Shakoor_h 00:00, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

To Blademaster313, if you have a solid source for your information, it would probably be really usefull in adding appropriate sources to the amin article. Please share, if possible. --Byakuren 23:39, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Are you guys waiting on the anime adaptation? Is there any information confirming that Naruto II (or at least Kakashi Gaiden) is being worked on right now? It will just make you go crazy waiting on the anime adapation of Naruto II. --Beef noodles 21:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Popularity is complete rubbish and NPOV

The opinions expressed in the popularity section are not encyclopediac or accurate. The claim that illegal distribution is largely cause of its popularity is absolute tripe. No measurement has been or real evidence. It is on TV thus one could claim that TV was the reason for the popularity. —This unsigned comment was added by 206.191.28.13 (talkcontribs) 05:07, 30 March 2006.

That section does not claim that is largely the cause of its popularity; it says "Naruto's growth in popularity outside of Japan was due, in part, to its availability on the Internet." Over 10,000 people download episodes from Dattebayo's torrent site each week (the site has live numbers). Back when episode 135 was released, episode 133 had been downloaded 200000 times (see [1]). This was before a single episode of the anime had been released in the U.S. How could anyone have been a fan of the anime in the U.S. at that time? The show only aired in Japan. I'm sure the numbers are similar or higher for the manga, but I can't provide any references.
I know I shouldn't cite original research, but I am one of those people who discovered Naruto on the Internet and became a fan because of it. From my perspective, it seem only logical that others also found out about the series in a similar fashion.
It is unfortunate that no solid research has been done, but I think comparing sales numbers and download numbers would make the article stronger. ~MDD4696 05:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
I've been thinking about more NPOV ways to word that section, and I think we can definately improve it. I'll get to that... sometime heh. ~MDD4696 17:51, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
I rewrote the section... hopefully others can improve it now? ~MDD4696 01:25, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Story arcs

The Story Arcs section is starting to turn into a plot summary, instead of a brief overview of the different arcs in the general storyline. I suggest that we merge the entire "Part I Filler Saga" into one arc. The fact that the filler arc description is longer than the main story is backwards, and there really isn't anything important enough to warrant a section for each little adventure. I would also ask that someone who reads the manga cut the Naruto II section down a lot. There's no need for more than two or three sentences for each arc. ~MDD4696 01:33, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

As the number of episodes is very large, I would say the separation into individual arcs is very useful (e.g. for locating/verifying material). The amount of material per arc could definitely be reduced, though. Incidentally, is the episode (101?) where they are trying to uncover Kakashi's face not filler? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.7.2.189 (talkcontribs) 13:41, 6 April 2006.
I've shortened the summaries a bit. About merging the filler arc summaries; I don't know. I'm neither for, nor against it, I guess...
The Unmask Kakashi episode was semi-canon. It's was partly based on a special omake story Kishimoto made for the first data book. The Haze-brothers part was filler, though.

Tiny Mistake

THere is a tiny mistake in the Story Arc section. I says in the Sasuke Retreval Arc that Sasuke leaves the Leaf Country. The Country is really Fire, the Village is Leaf.

It can be refered by both 'cause it's Konoha (Leaf Village) and Fire Country.

Konoha(Leaf Village) is within the "Fire Country" so it should never be refered to as the "Leaf Country" Bushido Brown 01:25, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

You might as well delete all the stubs. I've actually ben kinda searching for info on Dattebayo, and it keeps redirecting to Naruto, where it says nothing about it.

Naruto canon...

(Small spoilers ahead for those who haven't watched the anime recently)

While this is not specifically about Naruto on wiki, the topic was brought up by what I've been reading on various Naruto wiki pages. That topic being that people don't consider the filler story-arcs canon. The thing is... the Naruto anime and manga are two seperate continuities. It's not up to the fanbase to decide what is canon or not. Since the filler episodes were made, then they are canon to the anime's continuity.

Many fans tend to debase these episodes purely because of the fact that they weren't in the manga. The bottom line, however, is this... if these stories had been in the manga no one would have a problem with them. You can tell yourself you would still dislike it as much as you like, but we all know the fanboyishness would cloud your vision, and you'd defend said stories until your last breath, simply due to it being part of the manga. Of course, anime fans usually tend to be anal in that regard, so it's nothing new. It's the same situation with that series DragonBall GT, just because it wasn't adapted from a manga, and Akira Toriyama didn't hand write every episode, it is debased. But the thing is, Toriyama did supervise over every aspect of that series, nothing was done without his express consent. And one can assume the same goes for Masashi Kishimoto and the Naruto filler material.

The point is, it doesn't matter if you love the filler episodes or hate them, it's not our place to decide if they're canon or not. By the episodes simply existing and not contradicting anime contintuity... that makes them canon. They also provide several useful services, such as:

  • (1) The anime was quickly overtaking the manga, without these filler episodes they would have ran out of source material and would have ended up with something like Trigun, or Shaman King, where the animes and mangas end very differently.
  • (2) We get to learn about the expanded Naruto universe. The various other countries, villages, their people, legends, and so on. Before we were limited to mostly Konoha (and a hanful of other places), but now we have a much more broad view of the world Naruto lives in.
  • (3) We're given a more in-depth look at what makes the characters from Konoha tick. Such as Mitarashi Anko, who we barely got to know during her short appearance in the chunin exam, but we got an in-depth look at her history during one particular filler arc. Not to mention Naruto's fellow genin, alot of whom were not elaborated on very well pre-filler.
  • (4) We also get to see how far Naruto and his peers have grown recently, Hinata's newfound strength and slightly higher confidence, for example. Also we get a glimpse of a very small part of the missing two and a half years between the Naruto series (or the few months directly before that gap starts).
  • (5) The various plots of Orochimaru and Sasuke, as well as the Ataksuki, are expanded upon in a sort of prologue to what comes next in the anime's adaption of the manga.
  • (6) The bonds and relationships Naruto has formed get more attention, we get to see the growing relationship between him and Tsunade (as strained as it may be), as well as his bonds with other characters, such as Hinata.
  • (7) We get a break from the overly dramatic parts of the story. While they're amazing, not every moment should be like the battle with Sasuke. That meaning the series shouldn't always be overly intense and serious. Sometimes some fun light-hearted adventures with Konohamaru/whoever allow for a break from the intensity of Gaara, Sasuke, and Orochimaru.

To elaborate...key among all of these points is number one. Without the filler episodes the Naruto series would have been forced to either go on a long hiatus while more manga was released, or to completely differ from the manga's plot down the line. Where as the filler episodes fit snugly into a niche of the continuity that would have been used for nothing, and thus doesn't have a negative effect on continuty. Had the anime surpassed the manga that would have damaged the anime series irreparably, making it the anime and the manga's plots differ completely at key points.

The second most important thing is that these filler episodes do give us a chance to get to know the characters, areas, and legends of the Naruto series on a more intimate level. Where-as Ten-Ten was once very bland, for example, now we have a slightly better grasp on her personality, and what makes her...her. And thirdly, getting a break from the non-stop emotionally intense stories is always good. Some of my favorite experiences with the Naruto anime series were the earlier episodes, when these heavy burdens (such as Naruto wanting to find Sasuke) weren't making the characters so serious all the time.

Long story short... anything that happens in the anime is canon to the anime. Well, that about does it for me, I just wanted to get that off my chest. It has been bugging me for a while now. Heh. --Venomaru 10:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

The only problem I see with filler is that it might at some point push Masashi into a corner regarding a character, like how Anko supposedly has memory loss. This was never even hinted at in the manga, or the introduction of a man(can't remember name) who was allegedly a member of the Seven Mist Swordsmen, what if Masashi had already thought of all the swordsmen beforehand? Of course, they can always retcon it, like maybe that guy was lying about being a member. Or something. --Ninja6Fett 00:06, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

The main problem I believe Naruto fans are having with the fillers is that they're pretty bad. It has the characters very out of character, and it seems that the writers are just pulling ideas outta their ass. I very much doubt that Kishimoto has any input in any of these episodes. I admit that some character exposition is good, but what if Kishimoto adds information in either the databooks or later on in the manga that contradicts this information? We would be left with a whole lot of stuff that would either need to be ignored, or retconned. The anime and the manga are not in two separate continuties, they are very much the same story.
Another gripe that anime fans would have is that its almost a year's worth of bad filler, and long blocks of filler have killed animes before, such as Rurouni Kenshin. The writers of that anime stuck in a whole lot of filler before they got around to animating the last arc of the series, and it got such bad ratings that it was canceled.
About you mentioning that we get a bit more infomation about the Naruto universe, so what? Do we really need to know about every single place in the Naruto world? These episodes are probably never going to be revisited in the anime ever again, and certainly not the manga. This means that all the new techniques developed during these missions will never be seen again.
Also, I doubt the validity of your statement regarding your claims that the fans would not find fault with the fillers if they had been in the manga. First of all, Kishimoto would not devote that many chapters of manga to something that has no overall contribution to the plot. Next, Kishimoto's writing is of better quality than that of the fillers. If it went down to the level of the fillers' I would expect some fans to lose interest in the series.
I agree that the fillers are a necessary evil, but did they have to be so bad? I can stand small arcs of filler, but this block is just too much for me. --GhostStalker 01:47, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't find all of them bad, infact for the most part I tend to enjoy them (the later fillers especially). Although every now and then they'll have a good story, and then do something really odd (such as make Mizuki a tiger-man). But the good part of all this is that we got to find out what happened to Mizuki. We get to find out more detail about his character. The same goes for any of the characters used in the fillers. I also don't find the characters all that out-of-character, Lee is still a serious but silly guy, Neji never cracks a smile, Kiba is no different...etc. The only characters who have really changed (and only a small amount) are Hinata, and Naruto. Hinata seems a tiny tiny bit more confident.

As for Naruto, each new place they go on missions to seems to hold specific importance for him. In the Sea Country arc he found a person considered a monster, something he knows all too well. In the Bird Country arc he found a person who knows the pain of being alone, just like him. And so on. You could almost call these experience theraputic for Naruto, helping him get past some of his remaining insecurities.

I personally think Naruto's creator was, at the very least, allowed to make the final decision as to if he wanted these stories in his world. And they were most likely built around existing continuity, and the continuity that they knew was coming. As such, has it contradicted anything yet? Not to the best of my knowledge. And I don't think it ever will, because Kishimoto provavly takes all of these happenings into account when he's writing his manga, and the writers of the anime series probably take his future manga happenings into account when they write the filler episodes.

I still believe that if Kishimoto wrote these filler episodes, and if they had been in the manga prior to being in the anime...that fans would be as adamant about defending the filler (which, if it was written by Kishimoto, wouldn't be called filler). And another thing, why is it everyone has a problem with the filler episodes, but when it comes to the equally un-Naruto-manga-ish movies and OVAs, all the the fanboys (and girls) never once complain? The reason is because there's a double-standard with fans. Apparently if it's not in the manga, and is put in the anime, that automatically makes it crap. Whereas if it's a movie, and thus appeared in theatres, that suddenly makes it the best thing the world has ever seen.

I don't know what else to tell you, I enjoy the filler episodes. They remind me of early Naruto (anything from the Wave Country arc downwards), but with more experienced characters. I think it's a nice change of pace, and even to those who don't (to each their own, afterall), it's as GhostStalker said... they're a necessary evil in order for the anime not to overtake the manga and thusly become a different show entirely. In the end it isn't about the strengths or weaknesses of the filler episodes, it's about the fact that it's not up to the fans to decide what is canon, and what isn't. We can't pick and choose what we like and say the rest didn't happen. The bottom line is that if it exists and happened in the anime, then it is canon to the anime. --Venomaru 10:25, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Maybe the filler arc is part of the 2 1/2 year gap between the last chapters and the New Naruto II. Or part of it (the other part being training with Jiraiya).

Venomaru, I understand some of your points, but I have some points of my own to present. First, I don't think it is safe to assume that Toriyama approves of all filler content (unless you have a source on that, in which case I will gladly stand corrected.) Second, I also think it is a weak assumption that fans like the movies any better than the filler arcs. From the forums I have visited, many fans just have lower expectations for the movies; and some even think that some filler arcs would've made for better movies.
Lastly, and most relevant to your subject, is the matter of cannon. I will grant you that in the context of the anime, filler material is, as you put it, "canon to the anime", if you need to consider it a canon of some sort. But traditionally, canon material needs to come directly from the original source of the fictional universe (Kishimoto's manga); adaptations (which is what the anime series is -- fillers included) have almost universally been regarded as non-canon material. So, in the absence of the phrase to the anime behind the term canon, I'm afraid you'll have trouble getting away with cataloguing filler content as "canon"... remotely possibly "canon to the anime", but almost certainly NOT "canon". --Byakuren 03:03, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
isn't it the kish's descision? what are his view on the filler episodes? Masashi Kishimoto DESCISION! WRITERS DESCISION ! CREATOR OF NARUTO AND MANGA DESCISION!
I agree with anon. above that, ultimately, it is Kishimoto's prerogative what is canon and what is not. But, in the absence of explicit backing of the fillers from Kishimoto, I think we should err on the side of caution and consider the fillers (and any anime addition that's not manga-based, for that matter) NON-canonical. --Byakuren 18:41, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
I'd opt for the opposite. In the absense of any claim denying their canonicity, one can assume that they easily could be canon. It's not like Kishimoto has no input in their creation. Furthermore, the events are as such that they could easily be considered canon, as their events have little bearing on the manga. On an unrelated side note, I'd like to burn the most recent episode from my mind with a hot poker (I don't mind such situations, but there's a limit). – Someguy0830 (Talk | contribs) 22:19, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
I understand your concern, Someguy0830. I think 2 concepts need to be clarified before this can be settled. First, we need to agree on a definition of canon, not in the context of the Naruto universe, but in the context of fiction in general. The rule of thumb seems to be that it is the source of the material that determines canonicity. Imo "having some input" does not qualify as being the source, but I can appreciate this is largely a matter of personal preference. Second, I think the reason why so many want to identify material as "canon" is that they associate the that label with quality. Canonicity (or non-canonicity, for that matter) is entirely dependent on source and source approval, NOT on the quality of the fictional material. (That some of the Naruto fillers have sucked beyond belief does not help in promoting this idea.) I think if people felt comfortable with the fact that the label "non-canon" assumes no requirements on quality, the debate might mellow out.
That said, this interesting discussion convinced me that the Naruto community may never reach a consensus on the subject of canonicity. And I can live with that. -- Byakuren 17:48, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

dattebayo (the phrase, not the fansub group)

  • Is it worth mentioning that Naruto's Japanese catchphrase dattebayo is translated into "Believe it!" in the dubbed version? There doesn't seem to be a place in this article for mentioning it; maybe in Naruto's character article. Danny Lilithborne 05:39, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Some in other places have said that it's a small phrase to add emphasis, like 'don't cha' know?!' I'm not sure if they're correct, though...

Naruto OST

Hey, I've been thinking: shouldn't there be an article about the Naruto OSTs? I mean, you got opening-ending themes, but for people looking for the other songs that aren't used as opening-endings, then they'd be out of luck. Same should go w/ all OSTs from other anime...

Criticism & Rumors section

This section was completely speculation and original research, so I've removed it. If anyone wants to re-add it, find some sources first. And no, the forums don't count. There needs to be some independant source which has objectively analyzed or reported on the show's ratings and fan reactions. ~MDD4696 21:44, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I witnessed and participated in a similar discussion a few days ago. In the end it was agreed apon that most, if not all inner-fandom "controversies" are hopelessly unverifiable, and thus are impossible to source. It was agreed apon that a long drawn out article or section on the controversy at hand (whatever it may be) was un-needed, and unfounded. In the end it was decided that a small paragraph or two in a small section within the core article was acceptable. So, I suggest that we follow suit and return the "Criticism & Rumors" section (to be edited to just criticism when the fillers end, as the rumors will then be pointless)... back to the main article.
To clarify on my "hopelessly unverifiable" comment, it should be noted that the majority of fans who complain about the fillers are not Japanese viewers. Infact, most of them are fans who follow the online fan-subbing of the Naruto anime series (since the dub hasn't reached the filler material yet). As such, Japanese producers and creators will not pay attention to the english fans' comments. Which means that there will never be outside writer/creator/etc comments on the subject at hand. There are many many series pages on wiki, msot of which are maintained by fans. As such, only we, the fans, have the inside story on these inner-fandom issues. It should also be noted that most series-related articles on wiki designate a small section to these fandom-related issues. Very few of which can source these facts, as they are usually viewed firsthand. --Venomaru 02:28, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Ah, yes, but we, the first-hand fans also have the narrowest and skewed points of view. I frequent the forums, I see the discussions... but I also realize that this is not the big picture. It kind of stinks when we cannot include more detail on original research/unverifiable issues such as this, but in the end Wikipedia is better for it.
If you'd like to re-add the section, please cut it down even more to the core facts, such that nobody can dispute it. I originally wrote the "Growth and Popularity" section, and in response to an above comment I forced myself to stick to the facts, and I think the section is much better because of it. ~MDD4696 04:02, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Honestly it doesn't bother me much either way, although earlier I did add a NPOV to the topic at hand. I think the best way to cut it down would be to remove the rumors sections. Thus shortening it to one small paragraph. For the most-part that one rumor is pretty useless anyway. So I'll do that. --Venomaru 04:21, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

I've deleted the latter half of the criticism section. It seems to have been based on a mistranslation of Japanese. 今後の展開: 新規ライセンシーを募集中です as was quoted does not mean "Future Development: New licensee in acquiring process", but "Looking for new licensees". And this is listed in their merchandising section of their website on a page titled "introduction of properties" ("properties" as in "IP"). Should be pretty easy to see for the average person that this does not add up to "Animation studio has yet to acquire license".--Kyabetsuyaki 09:00, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Potential Major Edits

Iam seriously thinking about editing all character pages and for example changing Hatake Kakaishi to Kakaishi Hatake, it wouldn't hurt anything at all, would anyone have an objection to this?--Jack Cox 01:32, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

  • The English version of the manga uses the Japanese order; that's why they're in that order on Wikipedia. WhisperToMe could tell you more about it. :) Danny Lilithborne 01:41, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
    • I agree with Danny Lilithborne, and, for all it's worth, support leaving the traditional Japanese name order. --Byakuren 18:44, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

That would be great to have a "team" sections, in which all teams are listed (for instance sarutobi team, Jiraiya team etc.) if anyone is up to i would really enjoy this kind of presentation of the characters.

  • NARUTONarutoRationale: Obscure, nonstandard English rendering of Japanese title, done solely to disambiguate from other articles listed at Naruto (disambiguation), but now that the dab page is at (disambiguation) rather than Naruto there's no need to go to such bizarre lengths: Naruto is both the most accurate and the most common title. -Silence 10:23, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
The manga should be at Naruto (manga), not Naruto. Naruto should be the article about the whirlpool. Fg2 01:07, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
The article is about both the anime and the manga, not just one or the other, so naming it "Naruto (anime)" or "Naruto (manga)" would be completely unacceptable unless significant surgery were done to divide it into two articles, and splitting it in this way in the foreseeable future would be detrimental to the article's coherency, as well as completely unnecessary, and inconsistent with the vast majority of other articles on joint anime/manga series (e.g. Fullmetal Alchemist, Ranma ½, Midori Days, Azumanga Daioh, Speed Racer, Sailor Moon, Love Hina, InuYasha, Chobits, FLCL, Lupin III, and countless others, all of which cover both an anime and a manga of the same name). Moreover, I really don't see how there could be any argument for the whirlpool being the main article; the only two viable options I see are having the dab page at Naruto or having the anime/manga at Naruto, and although I'm not a Naruto fan, its worldwide popularity, and the lack of especially much noteworthiness (or of a completely identical name) of the other entries at Naruto (disambiguation), makes it quite clear that it's the primary topic with this name (and it's the one 99% of people are most likely to be looking for if they do a search for "Naruto", making this the approach that will by far benefit the most users). The whirlpool, Naruto whirlpool, is a stub with barely more than half a dozen articles linking to it and 0 InterWiki links (not even one to the Japanese wiki!!), unlike NARUTO, which is an extremely expansive article with dozens of daughter articles, InterWiki articles in more than 20 different languages, and a total of something like 700 pages on Wikipedia linking to it. More relevantly, I just honestly don't see how the Naruto whirlpool is of more global importance than one of the most popular and best-selling anime/manga series of the last few years. Could you explain your reasoning? -Silence 09:55, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Then make it Naruto (fiction) or Naruto (fictional universe). The whirlpool is a million years old. The whirlpool has been part of Japanese culture since the beginning of Japanese culture. Fg2 21:28, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Age and notability are not synonyms. Your personal opinion does not outweigh common usage and simple practicality for the vast majority of users, and the fact is, anyone searching for the whirlpool will easily find it by typing "Naruto whirlpool"; there is, on the other hand, no consistent or simple way for a user to know what to search for to find the Naruto anime/manga (other than "Naruto" itself, hence this move) that isn't highly counter-intuitive to the point of uselessness. And, as I pointed out above, if Naruto whirlpool really was an absolutely integral and pre-eminent aspect of Japanese culture, wouldn't the Japanese Wikipedia already have an article on it? I'm not disputing that the Naruto whirlpool is important, but for the purposes of disambiguation, what's convenient for the most users overrides historical elitism. -Silence 21:33, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Don't use the word current in encyclopedic article

This article uses the word "current" or "currently" multiple times especially in the area of episode/chapter counts. It is not a good practice because no one can guarantee that this article is updated everyday. i.e. the word "current" can become obsolete at any time. When the on-line wikipedia is released in CD-ROM format in the future, the word "current" does not make sense anymore. I'd suggest to replace the use of "current" with something like "as of April 2006" or the actual date of the "current" update. Just a suggestion. Kowloonese 20:17, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Same thing applies to phrases such as "as of yet"... I have followed your suggestion on the Intro paragraph to Filler Saga, pending the adoption of a specific dating convention. --Byakuren 23:28, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

InuYasha ended because it caught up to the manga?

In the Criticism section, the article states that the InuYasha anime ended because it caught up the the manga, with a "citation needed" notice. However, is that true at all? Popular knowledge seems to indicate that there was still plenty of manga left to animate when the series stopped. (Don't quote me on that though.) - Jonathan 23:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

From what I understand, this is true. Several years ago (2 maybe...) InuYasha had caught up with the manga and began creating its own filler episodes. The InuYasha manga is still ongoing, and now there is sufficient manga, but at the time there wasn't. --Miss Ethereal 13:59, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I doubt that Inuyasha ended because it caught up to the manga. Sure there were a few fillers in the end, but I don't think they were intended to buy time because the event in the final episodes were rushed and alot of detail that was in the manga was not put in the anime (such as an appearance by Kouga). While there wasn't a large volume of manga to be animated, there was enough of that particular arc to go on for more than 167 episodes. Roxybudgy 12:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Number of chapters, volumes and episodes so far in Japan and the US

This is bad form for Wikipedia because the numbers are constantly changing, which (at best) makes the data soon become inaccurate if the article is presented in any form other than online and (at worst) has them become inaccurate anyway because nobody continues to update it. All of these figures should either be removed or have a date somewhere with them to show that (for example) as of 21 May 2006 there are 185 episodes aired. Philip Reuben 03:51, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's that bad, releases aren't given, it only gives episode titles which are known 2 to 6 weeks before the episode is aired, and these seem to be dutifully updated when the information is released. If you want release dates for each episode go to TV Tome (or a link at the bottom). As for what's given I think it's more relevant, useful and is up to date. Qudos to whoever submits it. 23 May 2006. mr_happyhour
Although the numbers are updated regularly, I think it's a bad idea to have them. Each time you save an article on Wikipedia, even if you're changing a single number, it saves the entire article to the database. Seems like a waste of space for such small changes, doesn't it? ~MDD4696 02:40, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Names of the Various Jutsus

I have just been looking at the jutsu pages and various others, and the translations/what nthe jutsus should be called seems widely disputed. In some sections the viz translation is used, and in others the literal translation. I personally think the literal translation is more correct and true to the Anime/manga. I think something should be decided upon for this problem. Blademaster313 22:16, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I personally prefer the literal translations, but the problem is that they're less set in stone...for instance, translating "hajiku" could yield "bend" or "snap," whereas with the Viz translation, there's only one right way to write it. SpionKop 22:35, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
I understand, but I believe that the literal translations are more true to Kishimoto's original ideas. Either way, one way of translating should be decided upon. The mixing of translations looks unprofessional. Blademaster313 22:54, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Shizune's Weapon

I think someone should add Shizune's arm launching needles (I can't remember the name) to the weapons section. about the crtisism section and the end of the filler arc

I have been reading on some Naruto fan sites that there are rumors that the Fillers might end during August. One main reason is that Naruto Movie 3 is comming to theaters that month and they dont want to cause confusion with both story lines, EX: Naruto's outfit. so i'm thinking of adding something that mentions that to the Critism section, or if there is a more suitable section please tell me. I wont add anything until i get some responses.

Well in other animes take DBZ for an example, movies featuring pre timeskip was released after the timeskip in the anime. I honestly I do not believe there is any logic to this argument at all, it pure speculation. The most.. "atractive" speculation is that the filler would end by the end of the current season. It's a hole new part of the serie and I very much doubt it will start in the middle of a running season. Next season will officaly start with episode 209 it will air sometime around october. Koopo

What annoys me at the end of the criticism thingy is that many people already believe that the filler contradicts the manga.
Well it could. The More fillers they add, the more contoversy could be added. Yoroi and Misumi are dead in the Anime, if they are brought back for some reason in the Manga, that would cause controversy since they fought Naruto, Ino and Shino in the Sea Country Arc.
I agree with ... oh no signature, well, whoever said: "It's a hole new part of the serie and I very much doubt it will start in the middle of a running season. Next season will officaly start with episode 209 it will air sometime around october." Its a pity though. I dont like how the series is going. But I dont think that there has been any contradiction yet. I don't mind if the anime is different from the manga, but I do mind if the Anime is good or not. Until know, these fillers have all been going downhill in taste and quality. Do consider also that Naruto2 is going to be something that you can't really revert to. Naruto will be older, and different. so that means that the studios wont be able to capitize anymore on the young naruto and friends. Just like DBZ there was no more Chibi Goku. Hence, DB GT which turn out to be a failure. (Guille2015 22:44, 3 June 2006 (UTC))
That's true that it could end on 209, but they still need to do Naruto leaving and Kakashi Gaiden. Also I don't remember them sticking to strict seasons in any other part of the anime. I think it is most likely that fillers will either end on 200 or 204.
At the risk of sounding stuck up, I think until an official source releases a definitive date for the end of the fillers, or for the beginning of the next manga-based episodes, we should refrain from adding to the main article any reference to "rumors" about when the darn fillers will end. --Byakuren 23:32, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Byakuren. I have noticed that there are some childish people who are so pissed at the fillers that they vandalize the article. Consider that the article has nothing to do with the Anime or the Producers, it's just a source of information. It needs to have acurate information, not opinions and rant. --Guille2015 00:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Plot Summary Page

Should we start a Plot Summary Page for Naruto? It seems that most of the major character's pages have become a drawn out summary of the story instead of a look at the character's interactions and development. Would it be a good idea to create a separate topic summarizing the story but not going deep into character interactions while slimming down the swamped character pages?Zeketheo 00:58, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
