First chapter summary edit

"When he finally gets to the Catskill Mountains, he has to find food and shelter. He catches a fish, but can not create a fire. He skips dinner and goes to bed. The next morning, after sleeping in the wilderness, he hikes around the area, marking the location of certain trees and possible sources food. He then burns a hole into a large tree to make a shelter. Afterwards, Sam is very hungry, and he set to work, trying to build a fire. After many tries, he finally is successful using the flint and his knife. Finally, he's able to cook the fish he caught." This is just wrong. He can't light the fire, and meets an old man who teaches him how and feeds him breakfast too. And burning the hole in the big tree is much later than all this. • I think the author of that section had seen the film, but not read the book. Plus, I think they were about 9 years old. 124.169.15.110 (talk) 08:11, 10 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

How old is Sam in the book? edit

One of my students asked me how old Sam is. I'm in Japan and don't have a copy handy. Other readers may wonder the same thing. I think he is 12 when he leaves home. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.1.97.94 (talk) 05:06, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sam is 14 when he leaves home as said in the article.
