editI wanted to be able to link in quoting: "the mathematician Mike Reed once said that every department should have an historian"; it's an example of a broader issue with lots of ramifications, that happens to interest me. Also there's disambiguation with the computer scientist Mike Reed. Finally of course Reed has notability on technical grounds.
Incidentally, Reed is an exceptionally popular lecturer; lots could be said for which I don't have handy citable references. Also, I gloss the biology somewhat as I don't know how to summarize the large number of papers (as opposed to the small number of conspicuous books on physics).
I merely inferred his birthyear 1942 from his 65th birthday in 2007. Also the geneology project lists him as PhD 1968, the Duke page gives 1969. Sometimes folks date from the advisor's signature, sometimes from the institution's formal bestowal. Pete St.John (talk) 00:57, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
