Connection with Shakespeare

edit

The article makes no mention of Shakespeare or his influence, (unless it has to do with Shropshire), so I'm not sure why she has a category tag for Shakespeare; any explanations?--FeanorStar7 02:27, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've removed it, although Shakespeare is noted amongst various works as an influence on Mary and is mentioned in passing in at least one of her works, I think the reason for the tag is probably the more mundane fact that Mary Webb happens to be the name of Shakespeare's Grandmother. I've removed this and the trivia section. The birds are Blue or Great Tits, which are one of the few species to lay as many as 14 eggs in one nest - as mentioned in Precious Bane. Mighty Antar 23:55, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cold Comfort Farm

edit

Added a reference to Cold Comfort Farm, which probably helped to Doom (as in Aunt Ada) Webb's literary reputation. Interesting that a great director, Michael Powell, still made a ravishing film of Gone to Earth, as John Schlesinger, director of the TV version of Cold Comfort, did of a work by Gibbons' other target, Hardy: Far From the Madding Crowd. --Straw Cat (talk) 19:34, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Interesting that someone seems to be sensitive enough to the information about Cold Cold Farm to try to remove all reference. I hope that they will discuss it here, as it does no justice to Webb to pretend that it was not she was being parodied. If you refer to the article on Gibbons you will see that she worked on serializations of Webb's works including PB. Of course, if one could find a statement by Gibbons that CCF had nothing to do with Webb that might be persuasive, but I rather doubt there is one ... Straw Cat (talk) 09:56, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Actually I deleted it because "wickedly funny" is POV and also because you are adding unsourced information which really needs to be sourced if you don't want it deleted. Cold Comfort Farm may be a parody of Precious Bane or Gone to Earth, but then The House in Dormer Forest could also be said to be a parody of the genre. I would have thought the literary haigiography of Thomas Hardy made him a far more obvious target for Gibbons. Mighty Antar (talk) 20:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're right that "wickedly funny" may be NPOV and so I have removed it. Straw Cat (talk) 13:27, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK: source now added, straight, as it were, from the horse's mouth. I would add that IMHO all the writers Gibbons parodied including Mary are well able to stand up to her teasing. Straw Cat (talk) 19:46, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please could whoever keeps deleting the section on Gibbons discuss the issue on this page. Straw Cat (talk) 11:59, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mary Gladys Webb? http://www.larousse.fr/encyclopedie/personnage/Webb/138954 . 94.30.84.71 (talk) 09:07, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have added the Gladys in the text. She is certainly named Mary Gladys Webb on her gravestone in Shrewsbury Cemetery.Cloptonson (talk) 19:28, 7 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Naming of Mary Webb School

edit

The school was opened in 1957 simply under the name of Pontesbury Secondary Modern School, although the cited source, a school website, appears to infer it was opened under the MWS name. It was only renamed the Mary Webb School during the years I was a pupil there (1970-76) but I cannot remember which year. It is now called the Mary Webb School and Science College.Cloptonson (talk) 22:10, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • I was unable to find any source that gave the date the school was renamed, but newspaper sources did confirm that it changed at some point around the time that you mention, probably when it changed from Secondary Modern to comprehensive which was announced in 1975 as "due to happen in the next 2-3 years". The large scale 1973 OS map also refers to it as Pontesbury Modern School. Mighty Antar (talk) 23:11, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Your amendment is a better way to explain the school name link. I recall the "Shropshire Star" mentioning the forthcoming name change in addition to hearing about it within school. It was certainly called the Mary Webb School by the time I reached age 16 (1975)Cloptonson (talk) 05:28, 7 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
